    News brokers. Big news goes to the well-connected. Sounds like politics. The impact of the internet is overwhelming. Impressive take, Mike.

      I have a feeling what will happen is something similar to the Blazers/Sonics, where everyone in either city is "secretly" equally a fan and supporter of both teams, while they actively pretend they have some bitter rivalry and would never love their rival. lol.

    The Winterhawks are a junior team in the WHL, not AHL. The WHL is just below the pro level (AHL is pro hockey and the highest minor league). Kind of like AAU. The players are 16-20, get a small stipend, and stay with a billet family.

    I’d say just go with the name of the previous WNBA team, kind of like how Charlotte brought back the Hornets. I wouldn’t mind rooting for the Fire again. I love that players like Clarke and Reese are helping the WNBA grow

    • @TheCriminalViolin
      @TheCriminalViolin 2 місяці тому +1

      My issue with the Fire branding is that their logo and jerseys were literally just a copy/paste of the Heat's branding. If the Fire branding is revived, it needs to be altered so that it is unique, and not too similar to other brands in sports.

    Not to be rude. But I could not possibly care less about a WNBA team. Yes they will be here n Portland. So are the Timbers and Thorns and I pay zero attention to them too. As to Woj...not sad at all. Woj of a decade plus ago was amazing. Woj as part of ESPN was little more than a corporate shill for ESPN and the NBA. The days of the true Woj bomb were long over and long ago.

      @@LockedOnBlazers Weirdly I genuinely enjoy the pain and misery the Blazers put me through far more than I ever could get into women's sports myself. I think it is the fact that for me, men are far more entertaining to watch play sports, even if they're bad at it haha. The biological advantage just makes the NBA at it's worst far more worth my time to watch than the WNBA.

    I've been to as many Portland Fire games as I have been to Blazers games in my life. And that's saying a lot given the team was only existent from 2000-2002, and I am 30 going on 31 in January. haha. It's also sort of poetic given the fact that Jackie Stiles was the original Caitlin Clark back then, the only real difference being she was egregiously injury prone, as usual for Portland's basketball teams lol. I have a near 15 year old Storm shirt, which I just so happen to be wearing. I find it cool and ironic to say the least. That said, I've never really been into Women's Sports, nor the WNBA therefore, and am sure I never will be. But my basketball and random info loving brain which loves sports data will ensure I pick up plenty of facts & info on the W anyway.
    Edit: I wanted to add that I think if the team goes with the original Fire branding, they need to change the logo and jerseys up A LOT from what they were then, as they were literally copy/pastes of the Heat's branding, which was stupid and made no actual sense. I suppose it may have been owned by one of the execs of the Heat, thus why the branding was so Heat-centric, but that's just a guess on my end, given even the name itself is clearly a reference to heat and the flames of the Heat's branding, too. So again, it has got to shift a lot before it makes sense and is viable. A HUGE part of marketing a team in a league that is subsidized even at it's peak due to the fact most people, including women themselves do not find women's sports to be worth their time as it is truly boring, is to make unique, easily identifiable branding that also stands out well. If you can then make it work to where it can create or capture headlines, trends and attention, then if you capitalize on it right, you can set your brand and franchise up for a long time, perhaps even life and solidify your spot in the household name department. Effectively becoming akin to the Lakers or Celtics in that regard, but to women's sports standards, of course.
    I will admit though Rosebuds is the most common name I've seen by far over the years, and it is well-personalized to the Portland region, I do think it sounds far more like a Roller Derby team. So that could potentially set them up to be made fun of far more than average, and may cause some confusion. It also sounds like a cheerleader team now that I think about it, on par with "The Love-a-Bulls" of the Bulls... which is just weird, uncomfortable branding to me in the first place, even though I know that "sport" is still kind of stuck back in it's time some 50-100 years ago.
    As for Woj, I'm actually pretty jazzed he's finally retiring from his position. It's about time haha. And just maybe, it will open up the field again after he absolutely monopolized it to hell and back on his own, unintentionally mentoring his own rival in that monopoly being Shams. It would be fantastic if it did result in it changing and opening back up, allowing many more new faces and names to show up and become known and relied on sources.
    And the RG is 30 years old now... it's almost exactly as old as I am. So a major renovation at least was inevitable, if not a forced rebuild/new arena. As someone else mentioned, I believe the WNBA team will need/should play in the Coliseum while the renovations go on. That would also properly give more life and use to it, which is good.
    I didn't think I'd have anything to say about the Jerseys, but I do - I like this year's far more than last years. Also our Red alts NEEDS TO GO. They're TERRIBLE.
