Thanks so much for posting this. Joel was one of my first bass teachers and I think about his kindness and wisdom every time I pick up my instrument. In the profession now I am grateful every single day that I got to learn from him, and I still 20 years on think about my lessons with him. Thank you for saving this piece of history, it means a lot as someone who was lucky enough to meet this wonderful man

This is just wonderful. I was a writer on the show and was in the studio for Joel’s performance.

I just discovered that Joel Di Bartolo is my third-cousin. Our great-grandfathers were brothers. What a gifted man. I regret never meeting him, but his DNA is flowing in my veins.

I remember watching this the night it was on. Your dad was a great bass player!

I remember watching this when it aired and the quip by Johnny about the bass in the first few bars of the Barney Miller theme. Didn't think I'd see it again.
Joel was at Lakeland Community College in Mentor, Ohio in 1987, a school that I'm affiliated with. He was part of a group of professional musicians that adjudicates the live performances of high school bands during an annual jazz festival at the college. Another Tonight Show Band member, sax player Pete Christlieb, was also an adjudicator at Lakeland in 1990.
The professional jazz players I have met seem like pleasant people and conscientious to helping young musicians. Pete Christlieb had a good rapport with the performing high school jazz students at Lakeland and liked to make humorous remarks to them.

Such a humble man but put a bass in his hands and he just amazes you.

Yes he did. I was a student of his in 1987 and was his private bass technician that year rewiring his MusicMan basses. As a teacher he was ruthless. He didn't mess around.

@@jonclymer2572 Former Joel student here. NAU mid 1990's. I left many lessons with my tail between my legs and sat with his unpublished book at the time for hours. It was brutal but I learned so much.

Adriana di Bartolo Adriana, I played on Dee Barton's band with your dad for a couple of years in the mid-80s. Not only was he a fantastic musician, but he was such a nice person to be around. I feel lucky that I got to cross paths with him.

Miss your dad. He and my dad were close friends. I even slept at your house in Van Nuys when I was in town many years ago. You were just a little kid but your dad dragged me to a lot of places in 2 days.
How's your mother and sister? Please say hello for me.
Lots of great memories from the 60's and 70's in Rochester.

      Hello Rick!
Thank you so much for your message! I just saw it. I am sorry I did not get back sooner. I absolutely remember your dad! There is a picture of me sitting on his lap when we were in Rochester. Though I don't remember you visiting, it sounds like my dad to give you the grand LA tour! My mom is great - just retired and is loving like. My sister is great as well, she is a nurse and has a 13 year old! I will give my mom your best! Sending good thoughts your way!!!

5:56 Are there any great songs written for the bass, outside of the first four bars of the Barney Miller theme song? 😝 I remember watching this when it aired. That line always stuck with me. Thanks for sharing.

For a few years THE TONIGHT SHOW's opening credits showed a closeup of Joel di Bartolo's right hand on the strings of a Music Man StingRay bass, which I understand was one of the prototypes. Very proud to have one and I play it often. He and Alphonso Johnson were probably the main two people from whom I came to understand how an electric bass should sound in a big band setting.

I was a student of Joel. I played that bass, and I used his music man amp with the 2 X 12 cab that was custom made to sit under the riser. As I remember he told a story about that opening shot where the tuners were reflecting into the cameras in a bad way, so a tech sanded down the tuners.

His name is spelled DiBartolo, not DeBartolo. Aside from that I have absolutely no complaints. Thank you very much for sharing this wonderful video. R.I.P., Joel.
