Even though this practice is still ongoing, attitudes are changing. Very few young people in Japan eat dolphin or whale meat anymore, although dolphin shows are still popular. Like many social issues here, progress is achieved when the old die out and younger people take power.
Yes a lot of older people in Japan still eat dolphin and whale but it an traditional dishes in rare occasions but this day of era not of young people will not eat this.
@Jo No, a problem definitely does exist and it *is* that old people have too much power, and that many Japanese are resistant to progress and change. That's something I'd like to see resolved but it's undeniably a deeply ingrained problem within Japanese culture.
Things like cows, pigs and chickens and other livestock were domesticated over potentially dozens of generations over hundred- thousands of years of study and breeding. Unlike dolphins we have the techniques and data to prove cause and effect of our lifestyle choices should you choose to eat these kinds of meat. Donkey, and horses could also be harvested as a food source but generally aren’t as those were more to assist in difficult manual labor and transportation. And cats and dogs were more domesticated for companionship, status and aids in religion or hunting.

Also he said that it is the same as killing a cow... dolphins have language, they can use tools etc. Cows, bless them, are cows.
Also here are the other reasons ( apart from the fact we farm cows, they are actually very aware creatures too - they love touch, music and are more intelligent than we realised - but not like cetaceans) 1. Their meat is highly toxic from all the pollutants we have dumped in the sea. 2. 90% of large fish stocks are gone. If we don't stop taking so much from the oceans they will be devoid of life within 30-50 years. Dolphins and whales (and sharks) - which maintain ecosystems as apex predators are subject to pollution, bycatch, entrapment in fishing gear, boat strikes and heavy metal toxicity, loss of habitat and lack of food sources.(pollution/overfishing) 3. Another MASSIVE reason not to take them - we don't farm them like domestic stock to ensure massive supply - further we can't they do not do well in captivity BECAUSE of their intelligence and habitats. Humans (as an aside) are actually not designed to eat large amounts of meat ( shown in 500+ research ) - hence cooking and flavouring etc 4. This is all due to $$$ from cruel captivity and they just kill rejects- so destructive to creatures that have a third lobe to their brains that gives them a better social sense and relationship awareness/compassion than humans have - a major reason to leave them alone. Eventually, we will be able to communicate with them and realise what a massive crime we have committed. That's if any are left.🐬

This is already a mandatory law in several western countries like Australia, Switzerland, Norway and New Zealand.~ ~ As you might expect, a huge body of literature demonstrates that animals feel pain at the moment of slaughter and evidence suggests that it can take up to 14 seconds for sheep to become insensible following the severing of the carotid arteries. For cattle, it can take up to 85 seconds. To do that to an animal that is fully conscious is unspeakably cruel.
Here's a little googly question for you my dude- Would you be just as cool about it if a comatose human was "pre-cut stunned" and then chopped up for your dinner? (Another bonus is it saves tax dollars, and in turn, lives of other people, instead of being spent on a vegetative human) Since your emphasis is on "removing pain from the equation". For thousands of years, Arctic people have depended on whale meat. In Alaska now, the meat is harvested from legal, non-commercial hunts that occur twice a year in the spring and autumn. The meat is stored and eaten throughout the winter. Coastal Alaska Natives divided their catch into 10 sections. The fatty tail, considered to be the best part, went to the captain of the conquering vessel, while the less-desired sections were given to his crew and others that assisted with the kill. The skin and blubber (muktuk) taken from the bowfin, beluga, or narwhal is also valued, and is eaten raw or cooked.
@A B north slope of alaska isn't exactly chock full of grocery stores, what stores they have have high prices, and fresh produce is nearly non existent thanks to isolation.
@A B yea but there's alot of issues with poultry production in places like America, some of the most unhygienic, dangerous conditions. The people of the Faroe Islands argue that whale hunting is a far better option because of the nutritious benefits, the fact that these whales have lived long lives, hunting only happens maybe 1-2 a year, if anything cows and chickens are slaughtered in a way worse way, it is a sustainable food source.
It's habits they can't get over, disguised as "tradition/culture". People love to exaggerate and "elevate" their petty behaviors. It's like deliberately living on an island made of only rocks, and populated only with male crabs, and little babies. Given long enough, you'll end up eating the little babies, and maybe even make a culture or tradition out of it to feel better, a story to blur reality just enough.
Im Alaska and the northern Canadian provinces it is essential for the locals to hunt seals and whales etc as there is little access to other food sources...the Japan case sounds less necessary tbh

@@Zretgul_timerunner agreed it's somewhat silly you're saying a cow is the same as the dolphin when the Cow hasn't passed the mirror test and hasn't shown many of the high level functions dolphins can perform
Because a cow doesn't know that it is a cow. A dolphin knows that it is a dolphin. It is self aware. It is wrong to eat anything that can look in a mirror and recognize itself.
Cows were domesticated over hundred of years though. Japan has its own specialized breed of cow that makes up for one of the most expensive beef types in the world, Kobe beef. Japan didn’t start exporting its own cows out into international markets for breeding or consumption until 2012. Its more with newer generations in Japan they want more stable or sustainable forms of proteins and amino acids. Norway and Korea also have declines in dolphin hunting as well for similar reasons. Most average everyday animal rights activists are indeed vegetarian or vegan so they consume no livestock. Over the last 10 years, imports of avocados from Mexico or Peru has actually been an excellent substitute for omega 3, and other amino acids so things are changing drastically. P.S: Dolphins are capable of eating jellyfish, smaller sea urchins and are one of the sharks only natural rival for territories. So they save your life or save you pain more than you think
To be fair sir, the reason the world sees slaughtering dolphins vs cows very different is because we can increase the population of cows but dolphins are a finite species. Conservation is required. Ado, dolphins are extremely intelligent. Fear, depression and even suicide are seen in dolphin behavior. So, no, not the same at all.
Damn this is crazy sad to see and I’m a 25 year old man I don’t understand how people are still so stupid and ignorant in 2021! Hope everyone stays safe and keep GOD close to u
Most depend on their government to regulate and in this case make it illegal to even hunt them. The UN needs to step in or the citizens of this world need to asap. These animals are more intelligent than humans. So sad i cant even watch it. We have killed like 75% of sharks in the last 50 years. We have completely destroyed the checks and balances of mother earth.
Ric O'Barry really is a badass. He made a documentary called The Cove, in which you can see him interrupting an IWC meeting with footage of the dolphin slaughters in Taiji. It was pretty dope.
Well it seems that we may never come to a conclusion, we might as well just eat each other (it's just meat right?). We humans tend associate dolphins with us simply because of their unbelievable intelligence that is why we do not consume over-intelligent animals we're a bit similar.
I'm not vegan or anything, so I won't pretend that I don't have some ethical/philosophical holes in what I'm about to say but: *this is sick and Japan needs to stop. More mainstream meats should be enough especially when considering the intelligence of water mammals. Its like eating a person.* There are just some meats that are way more wrong and pointless. Again, I know, not the most consistent world view (at least until i go vegan or something) but still. There's no need for anyone on earth to eat certain meats like dolphin and whale etc. Its just wrong and pointless.
I understand your POV, but as soon as you get into using "more/less intelligent" as a metric/grading system for what to kill for food (not survival) and what to spare, you land on a morally slippery slope. A "person" is just a story you've come to believe, but there is nothing unique to humanity which makes them "exempt from being eaten". There are "persons" who (for whatever reason) are less intelligent than the average Dolphin, Pig, Cow, Dog, etc., taking that logic a bit further, from your POV, it would be moral to eat the mentally handicapped person. Intelligence is a bad metric to use. It's not about how intelligent something is. It's about whether it has a mind, and can suffer degraded states of existence.
@@user-xn7jc7ym2j i guess because they are one of the most inteligent animals in the world (top 3 excluding humans), they most likely know that they are being killed, and fear it, same with pigs (which is why i avoid pork tbh). Obviously that doesn't mean they shouldn't be housed and treated humanely but its somehow better.
You know dolphins are so docile when they literally have the ability to break your bones with one swipe of their tail or they can just bite you but they literally never do when these hunters catch them by hand and the dolphins just let you do it, I hope one day to see dolphins whip their tails and bite these damns hunters.
I just went watch this documentary on Japanese Vice but their comments are totally different from here. I just scrolled the comments and almost 100% comments are with Taiji and criticizing the hypocrisy of “the westerners “ saying that they eat animals (beef, pork, etc) as well or we should respect their local food culture or etc etc. It’s really interesting to see how different peoples opinions are based on the platform they are in.

Today's Japanese, of course, do not eat dolphins. Traditions that are rarely eaten in some areas still remain. Dolphin shows can be seen at some aquariums in Japan.
then why do they kill whales and dolphins if people dont consume it? I could totally understand if it were an indiginous tribe somewhere in the North Arctic that needs to hunt whale for oil in the blubber and food etc, but Japan doesnt need to.

I get that dolphins are incredibly intelligent and show multiple characteristics that are extremely similar to humans like compassion and complex social behavior but what you guys need to understand is that some of the animals we consume on a daily basis without even thinking about it also share those traits, ultimately it still comes down to what we as a society deem as socially acceptable to consume. Just saying they are cute and intelligent so we shouldn’t eat them isn’t really a solid argument.

Just him twisting facts to fit his narrative to justify his culture of slaughtering wild marine life, at free will and zero regulation. People don’t realize that fish, and marine life are a resource. China and Japan have hundreds of thousands of commercial fishing boat’s depleting sea life, across the globe at astronomical numbers. They give zero fucks about the future or other countries, ignoring international laws and doing what they want at free will. It’s a shame and needs more attention
China is a real problem for pretty much all sealife. They will take what's theirs and yours too. Unfortunately it goes back to "the great leap forward" the starvation was so severe that today they still greet each other with the phrase have you eaten? Here in America they have raped the coast of California with their buckets, hundreds of them at a time, taking far more than the daily personal limit allows. They don't care. The starfish population there may never recover, why? Can you even eat starfish? It's beyond monstrous to harvest so much wildlife just for it to just spoil, they don't take so much because they are hungry or have many family members to feed. They take so much because it is there. What a waste, what a shame. The fishing fleets are getting more brazen too, they turn off their g.p.s. so their location can't be detected, while their trip manifest indicates that they are near iceland. They are not in Iceland my friend, they have been net and trap fishing in protected water around the Galapgos Islands. They don't care. China has been threatened with fines and has had many boats with cargo seized, to bad its too late for the literally TONS of sealife in their cargo holds. How do they respond? More boats than the year before. Google Chinese fishing fleets, the images alone are enough to make you sick, if not then try reading one of the articles, the numbers will bring tears to your eyes. In today's day and age they can't Claim hunger as a excuse any longer, they know what they are doing is wrong, they know that we have demanded for it to stop but they don't care. The only way to put a end to the large fleets is to fire upon them and let the boat sink. This has been done a few times in the past, but the crew have been rescued. I say don't rescue the crew, let them tread water, film it, send the footage with the DEMAND that they cease and desist, otherwise this will happen from now on. They will get the message. Either the people in charge will change their illegal practices or the fishermen themselves will conclude that the risk isn't worth it anymore. We have to put our foot down, or there won't be anything left in the oceans. I'm afraid that the risk of losing their boats and possibly their lives just won't be enough stop them.

Exactly what I was thinkin. I was like cows are well bless them just cows. Dolphins are one if the smartest water animals we have
Also here are the other reasons ( apart from the fact we farm cows, they are actually very aware creatures too - they love touch, music and are more intelligent than we realised - but not like cetaceans)
1. Their meat is highly toxic from all the pollutants we have dumped in the sea.
2. 90% of large fish stocks are gone. If we don't stop taking so much from the oceans they will be devoid of life within 30-50 years. Dolphins and whales (and sharks) - which maintain ecosystems as apex predators are subject to pollution, bycatch, entrapment in fishing gear, boat strikes and heavy metal toxicity, loss of habitat and lack of food sources.(pollution/overfishing)
3. Another MASSIVE reason not to take them - we don't farm them like domestic stock to ensure massive supply - further we can't they do not do well in captivity BECAUSE of their intelligence and habitats. Humans (as an aside) are actually not designed to eat large amounts of meat ( shown in 500+ research ) - hence cooking and flavouring etc

As you might expect, a huge body of literature demonstrates that animals feel pain at the moment of slaughter and evidence suggests that it can take up to 14 seconds for sheep to become insensible following the severing of the carotid arteries. For cattle, it can take up to 85 seconds. To do that to an animal that is fully conscious is unspeakably cruel.

@A B You don't, but not everyone can do that
@A B north slope of alaska isn't exactly chock full of grocery stores, what stores they have have high prices, and fresh produce is nearly non existent thanks to isolation.

Cows were domesticated over hundred of years though. Japan has its own specialized breed of cow that makes up for one of the most expensive beef types in the world, Kobe beef. Whoever said dolphin life was more precious than a pig's life or a chicken's life.
Not just Asians, humans in general. If you still eat animal products you’re a hypocrite for pointing that out.
I understand your POV, but as soon as you get into using "more/less intelligent" as a metric/grading system for what to kill for food (not survival) and what to spare, you land on a morally slippery slope. There are "persons" who (for whatever reason) are less intelligent than the average Dolphin, Pig, Cow, Dog, etc., taking that logic a bit further, from your POV, it would be moral to eat the mentally handicapped person.

Thank you vice for this! People want to see this type of content not lesbian dance therapy/ race baiting garbage

I'm now sick and lost all respect
I think you missed the whole point of the documentary lmao
@Pajeet Patel Not you blaming the Chinese people for corona despite them having no control over it💀🤚🏼
Now you know how vegans feel for people who hurt animals for selfish reasons
@@KomalGill I don't hurt animals ever I feel ya
@@Scubad1975 I hope you don't pay someone to hurt animals either over a sandwich
I can't watch , I'm so sad 😢😭
How can the people doing this not know it’s wrong in this day and age?
i would much more likely buy a ticket to a sanctuary than one of those aquarium shows
There should be an international law to forbid hunting all sea mammals.
@@stalinjustafellowrussianco7440 Well, when it comes to land creatures we don't go about hunting for our dinner meat, do we? Why? Because we invented something called domistication about 12 thousand years ago.
"I'm not filming anything illegal."
Police: "But you might film something illegal."
So like... do your job?
My exact thought lmao
In Japan, they have really strict filming laws. You would have to blur out everyone's fact if you don't have permission. Since he is was live streaming, there is not a way for him to blur out people's face before the publication of the footages, which make it illegal filming if he show the fisherman in the live stream. This is just bad translation or play on words .
I’m surprised this happening in a country that is highly regarded like Japan
No country is perfect I suppose
This is one of the many dark sides of Japan that you don't often hear about, and one that Japan has been trying to hide from the world for decades.
Other country's problem is hidden
japan is FAR from perfect, remember japan's colonial empire?
Freaking western media never report same things in Norway and Alaska
@@devilhunterred okay criticize Norway and Alaska for same things?you are stupid
I hate animals and I’m not a pet person but I also leave them alone .. this is sad asf
Everyone should be taking stances against animal cruelty.
It could be as simple as reducing your meat and dairy consumption. Or changing your diet completely to avoid the exploitation of animals.
True about the difference in slaughtering of cows and dolphins outrage. Solution: stop eating cow and dolphin.
When the human races dies off, I hope nature can have another chance again, this planet is Paradise and we are destroying it.
@#Black Lives Don’t Matter edgelord account spotted
@#Black Lives Don’t Matter ok edgelord
#Black Lives Don’t Matter you keep cropping up with the intelligent comments don't you whenever I see your name I can always rely on a nice dose of fuckery
Aquarium and zoo used to be my favorite place, since i watched so many documentaries i feel so sick about myself that i found entertainment in other expense of living things kept in cages for the rest of their life. I stick to nat geo or discovery channel when i want to see wildlife, leave it to professionals who went to their habitats, and no or less disturbances to their lives.
*Insert South Park joke*
Come one japan, your cuisine is already good enough with only tuna and salmon. No need for dolphins
Freaking western media never report same things in Norway and Alaska
Disgusting, barbaric practice. Dolphins are intelligent animals that are our friends.
People have no problem killing pigs
Yup and pigs are one of the smartest animals
Mercury poisoning makes you insane - there are high levels of mercury in the dolphins - the fishermen eat the dolphins - the fishermen go insane - the fishermen kill more dolphins.
This is probably the most important thing to happen in Japanese history!. More and more Japanese citizens are becoming aware and open about social and environmental issues that affect our world. And I hope that many more Japanese citizens can be open and aware of these issues that are happening right now!. I know that Japan still has a long way to create substantial progress towards a sustainable and ethical future. But I hope many people can be like Yabuki and many other animal rights activists in Japan that are doing the right thing for Japan's future.
Wtf dolphins have done to them
We kill unborn babies by the millions, yet cry for the dolphins.
You and your special ears only hearing people cry about dolphins and not babies. You should be a superhero or something.
I’m happy to say that I’ve been alive for 21yrs n never seen a dolphin. I hope I see one in its habitat, not a circus 😩🎪
