New maps show how a tsunami could impact Seattle and inland Puget Sound

  • Could a tsunami, which starts miles off Washington’s coast, make its way deep into Puget Sound or Hood Canal? New maps from the Washington Geological Survey show it's likely.
    Parts of low-lying Bellingham could find themselves under nearly 11 feet of water. Part of the Snohomish River Delta between Everett and Marysville could get nearly six feet and Seattle’s Harbor Island could be inundated with nearly four feet of water.
    The maps show slightly lower effects in the south Sound, with the Port of Tacoma getting three-and-a-half feet and low-lying areas of Olympia could receive six inches.
    The area that could see the worst inundation is Belfair, at the tip of Hood Canal, which could see depths of 14 feet. www.king5.com/...

      Small quakes can help relieve some of the pressure. If they suddenly go quiet or begin to appear along previously unknown fault lines, then you have to worry.

    Completely missed a much more important one. Seven fault lines intersect just north of Alki point. Usually they let go every thirty to thirty-five years. Last quake was in the 1960s. Every year the tension builds. Should have had a quake between 2000 and 2005. We are now 15 years overdue and the 7-7.5 is now expected to be a 9-9.5. Major quake right near downtown Seattle, major tsunami on Puget Sound. Another ten years and it could be off the scale. West Seattle would sink into the sound, most cities flooded, etc. No one talks about this, yet it is a part of the history of the area. I bought my home on a hill that has remained above the tsunami inundations every time just for this reason. I have water, solar panels, batteries and inverters and food. Power goes out, I’m covered. I rebuilt the house to withstand a major earthquake, so I’ll have shelter. Enough stored food for a month. Put in a 10000 gallon tank under the lawn for water. Concrete wall around the house. Set for the zombie apocalypse. Girlfriend wanted a fallout shelter, so I built one under the back yard. Her dad was in SAC and she’s paranoid about nuclear war. She’s just nuts.

      @AJ-ly8si 3 роки тому +4

      The alki point fault would actually be similar or even less to what the nisqually quake was in 2001. It would be bad but not nearly as bad as the Juan De Fuca digging under the North American plate which is what this video is trying to project with the fallout from that when it releases off the coast.

      no one knows for sure, but the Cascadian Earthquake happens once roughly every 250-500 years, we know that because of the Native Americans oral history(stories passed down from generation to generations) to which is why (in English) it's called "The Big One". We know that the last time this happen was in the 1700s when Lewis and Clark saw tress laying down like a carpet and ask the locals of what happened. (you can read Lewis and Clark's journals abt that). Scientists also verified these journals and stories by surveying the region and found that layers of sand-soil-sand-soil-sand-soil were present indicating a Tsunamis reached as far inland than previously thought. so to answer your question..... it'll happen someday within 200years.
