- I recently went shopping for new utility knife to cut foam with and ended up with a Proxxon Hot Wire Cutter... and the utility knife too! I was watching a video here on UA-cam on a channel called Black Magic Craft (bit.ly/2vkj31f) where the owner, Jeremy, writes "I build terrain and models for Tabletop RPG's and wargames".
He does some terrific (and fun!) work and he also recommends the OLFA utility knife and the Proxxon Hot Wire Cutter. Yep, I bought both. I know there are DIY videos and articles out there on making your own but I've heard nothing but good things about the Proxxon for years and was intrigued enough to take the plunge. It's a little pricey compared to a DIY solution but it's still pretty reasonable at around $125 delivered.
Overall it's a heck of a piece with just a couple of caveats I talk about in the video. I can see picking up some accessories to really make this an even more valuable tool in the future.

Thanx for the clear, concise set-up instructions! My OG ones are long gone. BTW, I've found taping the end of the arm in place helps get a quality cut for longer materials. For really long sheets of foam, be sure to keep in mind that some foams tend to bend vertically too :-)

Thank you! Mine came a bit of a mess (I literally had to take the cover off of the wires and electro bits underneath because 2 washers were stuck under there loose. Never did find the third. ) This made assembling this thing much easier. Thanks again!
Hi Steve, sorry to hear about that. I do wish companies would take the extra few seconds (minute?) in order to minimize problems like this... and give us better directions too. At the end of the day though, it's a really simple & useful tool that I actually use more that I thought I would. Once I added the MDF fence for $10.00, even more useful so I'd call it a win. I hope you enjoy your cutter as much as I do mine!

I was undecided for awhile on the extra cost of the Proxxon but decided for some things, based on reputation and reviews, the extra cost is justified. Even though I don't have experience with other table-top cutters, I'm glad I bought this Proxxon. Thanks for your insight on this!

Thank you! I kind of agree... for such a nice tool they did, IMO, drop the ball a bit on directions. It really is a useful piece of gear. It is strange, we get the Imperial system from England, but no Kings or Queens here. England.. the place with Kings and Queens, don't use Imperial and got Metric from France. It is a funny world! LOL

Nice Video. I found one of these machines at the flea market today, for $15. No instructions, though. I was nervous about the loose red wire, too. The seller probably let it go so cheap because he thought it would be defective.
That's a great score!!! If you use this tool as I do, the thing is nearly invaluable. If not, you'd be happy to get the $15 :) Here's hoping you use yours... a lot! It really is a great piece. Having "suffered" though years of cutting with a razor knife and the blades always going slight crooked, getting dead-straight cuts is a real joy. Have fun with yours.

Your video made setting this up a breeze. Only problem I ran into was the 3 washers had fallen inside the machine from the factory and took some moving it around to make them fall out. But thanks for the video I’m setup and ready to start cutting foam

Just for the heck of it I visited the Proxxon website and asked them about the floppy quality of the fence as shown in this video. I'll follow up here with what they tell me.

You may as well throw those instructions in the bin. They're more confusing than helpful. Thanks for the video. I had set it up correctly, but I really wanted to double check before I pressed 'on' and I wasn't sure about getting it to the correct angle.
Totally understand! I actually did email them and suggested they produce a little video like many of us have here on UA-cam. They seemed less than enthusiastic, but maybe down the road they will.
I did just hear from the Proxxon folks regarding the loose fence on this wire cutter, here's what they had to say:
"The fence of the Thermocut was not designed to be as tight and precise as a fence or miter gauge of a table saw. Please keep in mind that this is a hobby tool. Proxxon can improve and provide a better miter gauge which would increase the price.
I agree with you regarding the instruction manual. Our engineers could have done a better job. Some things might have gotten lost in translation as this tool was designed by German engineers. I will forward you message to our R&D department. They are always thankful for feedback on improvement suggestions."
For hobby purposes it will just do but I'm presently working with a company which bought this device to cut foam blocks of 5 inches on an industrial scale.
I can't get the message through that this a hobby tool, they look more and more confused when the wire breaks several times a day :-)
@@fredwest7436 Yeah, as you of course know that's not going to work. It might well do a 5" block, but that'll be almost a one-off I think. Even in this video I wanted to rip a 24" section and the fence had too much wiggle in it to make it a clean repeatable action. Heck, I'm looking at ways to cleanly clamp the fence, or even find longer replacement fence material for longer cuts.
For the small to mid sized (barely) stuff it's a fine tool at a reasonable cost, beyond that, that company you're working with needs to pony up for a heavy duty table unit. Even the big units aren't insanely expensive... just more expensive :)

Money, they're cheapskates, it's meant for packaging so I myself would have ordered it ready cut but they seem to think one person working whole day cutting just 200 blocks or less is cheaper.
The stupidity of it all, I can only shake my head and laugh :-)

Nice video. You have a really good voice for UA-cam. I set up my Proxxon a few months ago and remember those directions were awful. I had a problem fitting the miter guide in its slot because I did not realize that I needed to loosen the knob so that the small clamp underneath that keeps the guide in place would loosen up. You cannot put the guide in the slot with the knob tight. I'm not doing a good job explaining here, but if you can't get the miter guide to go into its slot out of the box, loosen the knob.
I haven't done a lot with mine yet but am planning on cutting some thin sheets and using GreenStuffWorld rolling pins to make roads for my train layout.
Thanks very much! Still getting used to hearing myself on UA-cam. The Proxxon really is a great tool, but details like the one you mentioned are good ones that should be better detailed by the Proxxon folks themselves. The Proxxon is a good platform to learn how to tweak your own tools. Be nice it it was perfect out of the box but for the price, I can live with some of the tweaks I have to make.
@@Raildig Today UA-cam recommended your Proxxon fence video. Since my last reply I've used the Proxxon for a bunch of modeling work; roads, walkways, roof shingles, bricks, stonework. That thing is great! But having a better rip fence would help a lot so spurred on by your video, I went to GCmini and ordered the fence. And yes, you even sucked me into buying an Olfa knife.
I noticed that I could insert the wire a lot less than 2 inches into the brass receptacle to get it to grab. I also pushed down very slightly on the arm while tightening the screw in order to get some tension on the wire.
@@miked6335 You made my day with your comments, thanks! 2 years on and I still love the Proxxon and that GCmini fence is a big deal for me... well priced too! I've asked the owner of GCmini, Allen, if he'd consider making a round jig for cutting various sized circles... haven't heard back from him in a bit... I need to follow up on that.
And the Olfa, how do you like it? I still have the cheapie knives for cuts that don't matter too much but I really like the Olfa. For the few extra bucks (and given that I tend to keep tools forever), I'm really glad I have it! Thanks again for the follow up comments, they're appreciated!
@@Raildig My Olfa just arrived yesterday so I haven't had a chance to use it. I also need to head up to Home Depot and pick up a sheet of foam to use the Olfa on. Lately I've been using scraps from my initial layout build.
I noticed the MDF on my GCmini got a little fuzzy where I "clamped" it with painters tape when assembling. Something to watch out for but no big deal.
Just curious, have you or Jeremy at BMC used the Proxxon on foamcore? I'm tempted to try it to get a cleaner cut but thinking the paper and foam probably cut at different rates.

@@miked6335 One thing I often do with MDF (though I don't think I did on the GC Mini, is to seal it with a shot of something clear in a can... almost anything from varnish to glass frosting spray to thinned Mod Podge with a brush just to seal the MDF. Not really necessary, but it does prevent moisture absorption.
I wouldn't think foamcore would work as it would be more of a burning than a melting process, but I'd think no real harm in trying... except maybe a broken bit of wire?

You didn't mention the problem of the large square guide that moves when you cut the pieces. I also have this problem but I don't know what to do, except to hold the end of the guide so that it does not move anymore. Do you have a solution?
I have 2 (maybe 3) solutions, none perfect but workable. One you already know, that is to hold the end of the fence down manually when cutting. Next, if you buy some very thin Gaffer tape, you can run a piece along the guide and attach if to the rear of the unit when cutting. The Gaffer tape can be used several times before you'll need to use a new piece. Last, and what I do for ripping foam, I bought an MDF fence. It's a kit that that goes together well and it works! Of course I'd have like to have seen something in place by Proxxon to address this, but we have to take care of this ourselves. I'd also recommend checking out a video by Black Magic Craft that talks about some of these Proxxon issues:

None of these perfect, but they all work to a degree.
(Edit) I think I fixed this the wire wasn’t tight enough. I was scared to tighten it we’re it would pull out of the brass hole of wire retention [which was my previous problem].
My proxxon is brand new and I just hooked it up. Had some issues with the brass hole of wire retention but got it solved now when I turn the table on the wire heats and curves pretty extensively. How do I solve this?
I'm not entirely sure how the wire is curving, it should be tight enough so there's no play in the wire, no slack. This curving behavior is something new to me though I have to admit I'm still pretty new to the Proxxon.
Luckily from what i've seen you can usually overcome the fence issue with either holding the fence or using or making an aftermarket fence
Yes, it's not a too bad to deal with and given how good I feel the tool itself is. In my last video here (ua-cam.com/video/4p2YO3ARw-s/v-deo.html), I just went with a 1/2" wide strip of gaffer table to hold down the fence. Not overly elegant, but one piece of tape can be used over and over, so it is economical.
@@Raildig Yeah, ill try that with mine soon, I have one coming in the mail. Doing architectural models for my college studies but I'm sure ill use this for more than that.

Maybe if you had the heat turned up to full and went really slowly? If it worked it probably would seal the edges, but I'm not sure if it would work. I guess it would depend on how thick the strap is. Clever idea... if it works :)

I am having trouble removing the screw from the overarm.Imhave tried loosening it with wd40 and it is still stuck.I dont want to grind out the screw head.Any suggestions?
Maybe the head got a little stripped initially when you tried to unscrew it? In any case, this happens to all of us at some point with screws. There are some techniques for removing stripped heads, like this: ua-cam.com/video/rpbL8h-7jSY/v-deo.html
If the head is in good condition, heat is often used to loosen solidly stuck screws but I'd be careful as I don't know how the arm itself would react to heat.
Finally if you have no success with these, I'd snap a picture with your phone and try the Proxxon website contact form here: www.proxxon.com/us/service/technical_request.php
They allow you to upload photos. As a last resort I'd hope they can help.

Great stuff there, I agree! So far I've just been doing simple straight cuts using a fence from GC Mini.

What made you choose this Proxxon model over the other Proxxon ones that are available?
As far as I know, this is the only tabletop hot wire cutter that Proxxon makes. I think they make a handheld cutter or two, but I like this stable tabletop model.
Do you take any measures to prevent exposure to fumes emitted from the foam?
I actually do! I've started using a small 3-speed USB fan that I keep near the Proxxon. The little ones do a surprisingly good job.
My wire spool exploded into a birds nest when the tape came off....Did I do something wrong?
Haven't heard of that happening before... I'd try to contact Proxxon directly for a replacement. In the meantime, you can try to re-wrap and rig it up somehow to use it until you get a replacement spool. Sorry to hear about this.
Just purchased one and a quick question: How hot does the wire get? Once I get past '3' on the heat setting, it glows red. Should it be this hot?

I've never had the wire on mine glow red and in all the other Proxxon videos I've watched, I haven't seen this. It really sounds like it's too hot. I think I'd look at contacting Proxxon or the seller on this. I could be wrong but this does not sound right.

why does no one show unlocking the spool.. thats what i need to see!
The spool on top of the arm doesn't really lock, it just tightens down on the spool carrier using the knurled knob on top of it.
Underneath the cutter, Is the red screw across from the clamping system used for wrapping excess wire around it? Curious as to why it's red and not just an unpainted screw?:You weren't kidding about those instructions!

The red screw under the table... on mine (probably all of them?) it looks like it's a bit of a rubbery thread lock material. On the top of the cutting bed / opposite this, is a screw that seems to hold the bed in place. I just leave the bit of excess wire loose under the table as it doesn't seem to catch on anything.

Do you feed the wire all the way through the brass cup in the bottom it only seems to go a tiny bit then gets stuck. is it suppose to keep going or just enough to tighten down?
Maybe an inch or two down and then tighten it up. At around 4:15 in the video I show how far down I went with the wire. See if you get your wire this far down, just enough to tighten the wire up.
@@Raildig it seems to barely go in maybe a couple mm, but right now i seem to be able to clamp it down. There is a hole at the bottom of the bras cup clamp on the underside on yours can you get the wire through it completely im concerned there is some obstruction in my clamp.
@@dndforbeginners I just checked and that hole in the bottom of the cup does indeed run all the way through, you could keep running the wire right though all day! Make sure the tightening knob is fully opened when inserting the wire (counter clockwise), if not, that's likely the obstruction you're feeling. If you look under the unit, you can see the mechanical linkage from the knob to the brass block that is part of the cup.
I had the same problem. I was only able to get about 1/2 inch in. Wire kept bending so I could not get it through the hole.

I'm sorry to hear this. The only two things I can think is that either wire red wire that carries the juice to the cutting wire isn't connected solidly or that you may have a faulty unit.
I'm sure you already have, but just double check on the red power wire under the unit:

I assume the power LED is coming on properly?
I'd check these things and if you're still not getting the unit to work, I'd contact the store you bought it from or Proxxon directly.
Hopefully you can get this resolved quickly and get to foam cutting!

Mine did as I'm in the US, I'm sure they make different plug / power versions internationally as well.
