I honestly think this remix was necessary. To preface this, I don't really know Ulver, but I've been a huge fan of Carpenter Brut, so I'm obviously biased. But this remix punches up the instrumentation, and adds the necessary synths and thumping bass to complete the apocalyptic, dystopian lyrics. Hell, "do androids dream of electric sheep?" is a reference to the eponymous sci-fi novel that would serve as a direct inspiration for "Blade Runner," the movie that basically downloaded the genre of cyberpunk in the popular consciousness. Giving the original (and admittedly) slow-moving rock song a synth boost fits not only the lyrics but the overall image the song generates. As I hear this, I picture a 1980's Miami hellscape of cybernetics and neon, street gangs and palm trees. It's stylish, opulent, corrupt to the bone--and now it's perfect. Ulver's music is a trip - especially when you start all the way at the beginning with their black metal releases. I think I like Messe I.X-VI.X the most, if you want dark and apocalyptic. If you're looking for eighties vibes there is The Assassination of Julius Caesar - just don't expect synthwave.
