I've been looking forward to this one for a LONG time! My first video was 5 years ago and the full game doesn't disappoint. This video features full playthroughs of the first 2 chapters. I'll cover the rest of the chapters once CONSCRIPT releases on July 23rd. EDIT: Part two is now available here: ua-cam.com/video/YFhVdF07b9g/v-deo.html
@@leon4545 According to the Steam Achievements there are 6 chapters in total. I've not finished them all yet though so I don't know how long they all are (if they're all as long as Chapter 2 it's going to be a huge game!)
I like the fact, at least I think it's that way, that there are no supernatural stuff, no monsters, all those enemies are human, like player. It's just that war is a horror and enemies can appear like monsters, because of dehumanization, so it would be easier for soldiers to kill. And like in the example of christmas truce, as soon as humanity is restored in soldiers, they are not that eager to come back to fighting.
Interestingly it wasn’t always that way. Much earlier alpha builds from like four years ago showed the game was going to have a bit of a supernatural slant with what appeared to be mutant soldiers. I think the dev eventually realized that just the simple fact it’s set during WW1 would be enough to make for a compelling, grounded survival horror that doesn’t need the supernatural to be scary.
Yeah. Maybe the difficulty should be raised. And maybe it will be raised, it's not out yet, at last. But also, at least for me, no horror game, where you can fight back and kill enemies are scary
This is a true survival horror, but there's no zombies or demons or other unspeakable horrors from beyond: just mud, blood, water, gunpowder and faceless enemy soldiers looking to cave your head in with trench shovels or blast it off with a rifle. The British had the Somme in WW1, and the French had Verdun: a meat grinder with tens of thousands on each side and a constant back and forth over the old forts that lay there. The game really nails that muddy, claustophobic nature of trench warfare, and even shows the clunkiness of old survival horror combat with rifles and shotguns that need to reloaded frequently and having to take care with your aiming. Also, I like that when you leave the big trench fight in chapter 1 you're asked if you wish to abandon your post: something the authorities wouldn't look kindly on. In fact, it got so bad in the French army later on with them forcing their troops into battles they had no chance of winning there were mass mutinies.
Your last point reminds me of the ending of Valiant Hearts _(spoilers below, on the off-chance that someone cares despite the fact that the game's been out for donkey's years)._ Emile's story ends with a brutal push through enemy territory driven by a political officer who is forcing his men to fight an unwinnable battle because he genuinely thinks that if he throws enough bodies into the metaphorical meat-grinder the Germans have waiting for them it will eventually jam. The chapter eventually ends when Emile bashes said officer over the back of the head with a shovel when he tries to force the men in front of him into a guaranteed death sentence _(in gameplay terms, you're about to walk into multiple machine-gun volleys that cover each other while they reload, unlike the lone nests you've been able to dodge when they pause fire all chapter)._ Unfortunately, the blow ends up being fatal and Emile meets his end by firing squad despite saving everyone else in his platoon that day. Just because the mutiny was logical AND the moral thing to do doesn't mean your commanding officers give a shit. I'm aware that Andre's optional desertions are borne more out of cowardice _(at least when facing concentrated German pushes during the hold-the-line sequences - most players will kill more than their fair share of relatively-isolated trench raiders during the course of the game)_ than facing truly hopeless odds, but the point that deserters often have perfectly sound reason for taking the courses of action that they do still stands.
I still remember when you first covered this game. After years of little news, I had given hope for this game ever releasing. Seeing it at Steam Nextfest was a very welcome surprise. Now, I'm so happy to see you covering the full version.
It does seem to mostly be correct although there i`m pretty sure there`s a calque at 2:45 "Il(s?) Venaient/Venait La!" which is a strange tense to use if whoever it is is talking about the Germans as they haven`t stopped. Even weirder when not long after you get the far pithier "Les Boches Arrivent" (3:10) rest of it seems fine though and the VA seems French
Yeah, I imagine keeping the supply lines for food, water and ammo back then must have been pretty tough. Must have been lots of malnutrition and people dying just because of lack of resources.
For every soldier on the front 3-4 more are needed for the logistics alone Not to mention workers and truckers creating and moving supplies. So most military personal wont see battle if they are lucky The game hints at it in the barrack, most of 28 and up are Reserves, those under are Active. It's interesting how sometimes killed enemies drops, alongside ammo and other loot, photos. It's like the game is constantly reminding you that you killed a human being with a life and family outside of war, not just a faceless monster.
Every person you see, even for a moment, has lived for years without you ever knowing about their existence, and you're first interaction with them will end with one of you dead.
The horror of this game really hits home, knowing this, and worse, *actually happened*. It's a very sobering thought that the undead, aliens, and other fictional creatures aren't nearly as awful or terrifying as war against other humans...
But it's comforting to know that the aliens or undead fictionial characters aren't as profound as human YT commenters... whose comments are further made profound by suffixing their comments with "..." at the end...

There isn't many good World War 1 related games out there (to be honest the only one that popped up on my mind right now is Battlefield 1), so watching this game is a nice and pleasant surprise for me. Absolutely nailed the horror aspect in my opinion, trench warfare on its own is already a living nightmare, and it is depicted well. Still, I'd love to see a more massive scale battle (it is the battle of Verdun that we are talking about, with more than 700000 casualties in 10 months), with the AI a bit more "intelligent" and behave like real trench raiders back then. Seeing rifleman reaching close range to shoot, or enemies can't hear you breaking stuff a few steps away is kinda bugging me a bit you know. Thank you for covering this game, can't wait for the next chapters to be released. Also, quick question, is the rat attack a scripted event, or if you manage to destroy all rat holes then they won't show up anymore?

Expected for realistic hardcore survival yet it gave me more feelings of casual action game with dark background; the protag supposed to be a private in a major fort but starts with a shovel along unhelpful teammates and enemies already in the trench. While the comrades are all shot by Germans, the protag somehow manage to beat all the Germans who are supposed to be more skilled than a private soldier with a shovel, it reminded me a game where you start as a scientist with a crowbar and beat all the enemy forces who took over a planet...
