I first heard this song nearly 50 years ago, first I heard of Tom Waits. All that time, all that has changed, and the song still stirs my soul. I have never tired of this, nor everything Tom has done since. God bless, Mr. Waits.
Loved this from the time it was released. At 22, it made me look ahead to the promise of my own Saturday nights. At 69, it makes me look back at the false promises of youth.
Eastern Washington, in the scablands, a hot, got summer night. Coming out of a small farm town tavern. My friend and I are in the lotz drinking bottles of tavern Oly, the good kroesened beer. It's ice cold, the temperature is at 114. We get in his orange 70 Cuda and head for Cooley City. Master of Sparks is in the tape deck. Life was better then! I'm 74 now and have some fine memories. We listened to Waits then too. Saw him in the Paranomount in Seattle back then. A superb show! Thanks Tom!
such simple raw poetry in every lyric capturing the magic of the everyday life .A song that casts a spell on you just like one of those beautiful nights out on the town.
Love Tom. Looking for Step Right Up. Can't seem to find my favorite but I absolutely love having this great music so I don't have to listen to the lying braggart. This music transports me back to my youth. Didn't know how much I'd miss those simpler times.
Such a great song. The words blend so well together. It transports me to the places in the big cities that I used to visit, the darker, seedier parts of those cities so long ago. And then finding a sort of redemption because of a certain lady that you meet. A lady who literally rescues your soul. You weren't looking for love love at the time, but there it is. And through an act of magic, she loves you also. Oh, to be so blessed. To find the love of your life in that moment. But now as you fast forward through time, it is taken away from you. Your heart.
La escuche hace mucho en un disco de recopilaciónes de canciones de Tom. Y nunca supe el nombre de esta cancion...a todos les preguntaba esa canción donde se escuchan las bocinas😊 y fue asi que la encontre. Unas de mis preferidas💘
“It's not that we spend five days looking forward to just two. It's that most people do what they enjoy most on those two days. Imagine living a life where everyday are your Saturdays and Sundays. Make everyday your weekend. Make everyday a play-day…” ― James A. Murphy, The Waves of Life Quotes and Daily Meditations . Amen Will
I always remember the first version of this album (vinyl) had a 60 second or so reprise to this song which later versions (tape, cd et al) lack. I always wondered whose call it was to nix that reprise, and why. Formative years. Just beautiful.
"No, I'll not. Despair not feast on thee. Not untwist, slack they may be, these last strands of man in me, or most weary cry, I can no more. I can, can something hope, wish day come, not choose not to be". Gerard Manley Hopkins.
Oh wow Love a bit of Tom waits, perfect voice to sing a new year in . “Looking for the heart of Saturday night”in my list of top tunes . Oh and “The pianos been drinking” obviously 🤣

What you get up to since you first heard this song?
I remember the excitement of early Friday nights. The promise of meeting someone that would change your life.
False promises are mostly just missed opportunities.
The whole album is pure genius. What a songwriter!
As an added touch, the car honks. Perfect.
A bittersweet, beautiful song.

You don't even need to have a second cousin for this song to resonate.

У меня двое таких : Tom Waits и Владимир Высоцкий.
I got this song from watching (of all things) the old 90's TV show Picket Fences. Season 4, called "The Heart of Saturday Night."
