Hi Ciara, no you do not need to buy the camera. The Sling Studio is capable of interfacing with most cameras, and even your phone if you have the app downloaded.
The battery indicator on the camera link also indicates which camera is actually live during recording. If the indicator is towards the camera person how would the person being filmed know what camera is live.
Hi Mike thanks for commenting, back at my studio we primarily cover muiltihour sports events, only rarely doing interviews. We found it more practical to monitor battery life, at the expense of having to cue the person being filmed with hand signals.
