Sound Design Tips and Tricks for Animating FNaF Animatronics

- If you only come away from this video with one thing, let it be this: Doors.
Making FNaF animations over the past few years has taught me enough that I can now put what I've learned into words and pass it on. One of the most regular compliments I've received is from people impressed with the weighty movement I tend to animate the animatronics with, and the trick to that is largely in the sound design. I do have some handy techniques for the animation itself too, so I might make another tutorial video on that side of things at some point.

you got me running around my house seeing what different noises my doors make
This is the magic of foley

Where would bro gonna get the sound effects for springtrap.💀 If he made a animation for him.
@@the_Jimmyest_of_Jim you need some more material for it :)
Additional tip: if your audio software allows it, you can also pitch noises up or down to align with the size of the object you’re animating.
For instance, if you’re animating a large electronic servo, but only have a small one, you can pitch the original noise down and play with the EQ to make it sound like a much larger component!
This trick can also be used to get more mileage out of a smaller pool of sounds before it starts getting obviously repetitive!
Oh, yeah. I've thought of that. Thank God for DaVinci Resolve, eh? It's a wonderful program.
As someone who has a weird love for well done sound design
Im going to absolutely love this tutorial
Im gonna be re-watching this like 1000 times
Foley art is amazing. I've yet to sink my teeth into it (WAS THAT THE BITE OF-), but I'm sure it'll be fun.
I think it's neat that the different versions of the animatronics have unique movement noises, like the classics are a bit more cluncky and with alot of snapping while the funtimes are much smoother and clean, and the animatronics with wires like ennard and molte freddy have a slithering sound, it's very cool. 🙂👍
And the glam rocks have full movement, I don’t know in what universe you can make robots that quickly, but it’s fascinating!
@@livefnaf1234 i mean look at the optimus gen 2 robot from tesla, and combine it with modern AI, you'll notice we aren't that far
@@StupidYTDude yep. Still have a lot to go. But Scott didn’t want us to make robots like from the actual games, just in case some insane person wants to make FNaF a reality.
@@livefnaf1234 i mean considering Security Breach takes place around 2030 - 2040, maybe when that time comes around we'll actually have robots that advanced
@@StupidYTDude that’s very true, it’s kinda still weird to me that it takes place in the future, but it does make sense of how advanced the robots are
Definitely the best FNaF animator on youtube. You NEVER skimp on sounds and it makes everything feel so much more real.
I work at a Machining shop and there's this massive CNC mill that makes this loud metallic/numatic shout every time it rotates the tombstone. Whenever I hear it I think "that would make a great jumpscare sound effect."
Please share it if you can
The way I recognized the sound of the 3D printer (it has kept me up at night for many MANY hours)
Its really cool to see this, I have been working on a personal project for a little over a year now, and when I first started, I made the footsteps for an animatronic. The sound is so phenomenal and I do not think I will ever make a better one. For sounds I used me shutting a washer drawer, a heavy box, a soft blanket, and my old bedroom door
The teeth on that freddle are so sharp oh goodness, actually super excited for how that video is going to come along
i just started animation and i think u just helped a ton, my mind was blown when i realized those were door sounds, thx m8, hope to see other tips and tricks in animation
1:40 I love dramatically opening a door to reveal another door lol
Whoa! Some of my brain neurons just activated and made connections. I'm very picky when it comes to sound designs I use for my animations, I've mostly restricted myself to Fnaf AR and Security Breach sfx as I thought those would give the best results. But now I've seen (or heard) how more realistic it would sound when using home-made sfx instead. This time, I'll try recording my own sound effects, especially with doors.
Really good video! Would want to see a tutorial for animation from you too.
This is a nice little tips video! Cool!
After watching this video I am now going to be going around my house carefully listening to every sound to see if it makes good animatronic sounds
I absolutely love this, seeing how Foley sounds are made is so fascinating
amazing vid! I don’t think enough people realise how much work sound design do for you when it comes to making a scene better
Something about that suspenseful build up while the door was opening just to see another door had me dead on the floor.
Your informative videos are a BLESSING!!
You sir, are underrated and amazing. I don’t get it why this doesn’t have millions of views. I have to say, this video is gold.
This is useful advice for any kind of mechanical sound design, I'll be keeping this in mind.
This is so awesome. I usually take sounds from online sources, but because of this video I will definitely try recording my own. Thanks so much.
this is really really cool
One of the last comments stuck with me about how everyday noises around you can be useful. I've never thought about doing it but sound design sounds like one of the most fun jobs ever
ngl I did laugh my ass off when the door revealed the true end all, be all of animatronic foley... another door
This is really cool thank you!
This is a great video thankyou very much
i found it really funny when the door just opened to another door
Currently making a fnaf fan game, this should really help out with sound design! Thank you! Btw, the twisted ones models are so cool lookin, would love to see them in an animation again.
Hey guys, one household object that sounds like an animatronic moving a bit is an eyelash curler!
Let this guy cook enough, he'll be able to make the whole pizzeria
This is such an interesting video! I work on the sound design for many FNaF projects. Its really interesting to see someone else's approach to making these robots come to life.
Oh cool, you mean on the official stuff? I have noticed a substantial increase in sound design in the more recent games. What sorts of sound effects in them are yours?
Not the offical stuff! I should’ve clarified that I apologize. Just some of the bigger fan projects that are out there!
If you aren't already that, you really need a job as a foley artist. You're so amazing at sound design
I wasn’t even thinking of animating fnaf animatronics but this just gave me a whole new look on sound design because I’m a game developer and always just used stock sounds thinking how I could I ever make my own
Secret : DOOR
Funfact, BonBon is basically two styrofoam cups just mocking around lmao
Okay that's cool!
very helpfull!
I've been searching for various sounds I could record for a spring-lock failure audio. I want to try and recreate it from the movie. So far, I have a clicky knob from a toaster, a metal cat litter scooper, tiny springs from a plastic BB gun magazine, and some recordings of a creaky metal folding chair.
I also have a coffee table that the top can extend upwards. It has big springs on the metal bars and sometimes they make a loud TWANG, so I want to record those at some point.
Maybe look into garage door springs, or if you have an attic that folds down from the ceiling, that could work too. Just be careful not to actually mess with those kinds of huge springs directly, they can be lethal if they snap.
@@TheNickofTime I don't want to mess with my father's stuff. Ha, ha. We don't have an attic, either. But I will be sure to be careful around springs.
I hope you`ll make showcase video of all your models done so far
And this is what sound foley is for.
Sir I barely have patience to make my footsteps sound good
Would you ever consider making a fully fledged playlist just with your sound effects?

Instructif. =D
Instructions unclear, was doing foley based off of your instructions and the power suddenly went out.

Im soo sorry nick but, please I need to see the endo and model showcase of the toy animatronics for the distant voice video. Please 🥺
Well, I am already planning on making a dedicated video for Mangle, so that will naturally cover the Endoskeleton design. That would make a separate video for the Toy animatronics as a whole a little redundant, so I might lump them into the Mangle video instead.
@@TheNickofTime thanks 🤗
Hey nick it's me from gorilla tag and my little brother

whens the hand reveal nick?
What about showing how to make the endoskeleton more realistic just wondering you don’t have to don’t want to
Doors.
So you used doors to make a majority sound effects for Freddy Fazbear sound effects.
Do actual animatronic sounds count like not just servos but pneumatics?
Sure, everything can 'count' if it gets across the effect you're going for! Just remember that there's a balance to be struck between realism and impressionism, it's your decision as a sound editor what's most important to you. If you're making an animation showing off a model which has mechanical details like that, by all means pair each movement with the appropriate sound, servos, pistons, what have you. But if you're doing a chase scene or something similarly frenetic, having a sound effect for every single little movement can be unnecessarily cluttered, when it would bettter to just underline the broad strokes of the movements for the sake of clarity.

bro you gussed my last name
a nitpick the hand print on his eye is too visible and noticeable

so I was you know how playing animatronics are cute for me to get in blender ok to be freddy Door Sound
I can't READ THAT FAST

I don't really like the sound effects of the GR animatronics. Freddy appears to be lighter than he is, and the sound effects of his movements are simply generic high-pitched sounds. AR is better but has the problem that it only shows the sounds of the suit moving parts, but not the servo motors (with the exception of toys and Springtrap).
But I have to admit that even though you're small, you're better at sound design than animators like Jaze Cinema, who simply reuse sounds instead of creating them. Glamrocks, for example, make creaking and popping sounds even though they are high technology (?)
