As a guitarist that care more about song and riff writing than guitar shredding I love this type of content.
You are a very good teacher, and there are not many lessons that are focused on rhythm metal. looking forward to more!
I could stare at that guitar all day
Appreciate these videos Ray, hard to find music theory that is catered more towards metal on here
Your playing has really come along well. Thanks for sharing this!
Really enjoyed this video! As a hobbyist guitar player this was very useful to my goal of being able to chug and riff around in a metaly manner. Thanks for the lesson!
Really nice video. I love your point at the end there. Technically, you can't have a power chord on the tonic of a Locrian scale because of the flat-5. And that's the beauty of the point your making about Music Theory being a guide. It's like going off-road; if you travel from your home to your destination all by off-road, it'll take you forever and not all routes might be fun, but if you travel through roads and just pick good spots to go off-road, you'll reach your destination quick enough and have a great time doing it.
It feels kinda like it's own thing, this "power chord theory". Also saw a video that analyzes Linkin Park and Nirvana songs and they employ the same thing wherein they could care less about the scale and they just turn all notes to power chords, regardless of whichever is supposed to be diminished. Both Kurt and Chester even sing melody lines that make it ambiguous if the song is in a minor or major key because they sing both the minor and major 3rd within the same melody/hook.
Dude! This content is gold. Keep it coming man.
Thanks! Will do!
Very well put in a practical manner for the riffers out there! C# is such a nice sounding tuning, i was introduced to it back in the day with Misery Index - Dissent EP (or whatever you call a 4 song mini album lol), but yeah man... the riffs on those songs sounded so mean and in your face. Been keeping a guitar in that tuning since then.
And this video/lesson helped me fix one of our songs.. thanks bro ! Keep up the great work brother
Glad I could help!
Man, that goldtop looks fantastic!
Great video man! Locrian is super underrated
been waiting on more theory! would love to see a video on every mode individually
Man that’s an awesome video!
Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
This just opened up so much. Struggling to write and figuring out where to go
Thank you for this video! 😊🤘
My pleasure!
Nice thanks for the introduction to Locrian. Didn't know Locrian was good for metal. I am still learning and have been doing what you suggested to write riffs, but so far mainly with the Natural minor, Harmonic minor, or Phrygian. Can't wait to try out some Locrian.
Appreciate the way you speak about the dreaded theory. This was a cool video.
I appreciate you dude
Thanks this video really helped also your tone sounds great what do you use ?
Awesome video. This is so helpful To me as I suck at improvisation and riff writing ..I know I need more theory, but I really like how you showed how to write inside mode, and then break the “rules” and throw in notes (G#) that didn’t belong but sounded cool. Maybe do a series of videos, one for each mode?
Enjoyed the lesson,XRC, more please
Awesome content! Which Retros are in the LP?
Nice content as always, you still use 10-46 in drop c#? I want to test on my Dean ML with FR , what do you think ?!
Did you do the relic job yourself? Or just played a lot? Tell more about the guitar! It looks Nice
yes please
I'd guess natural wear. I may be wrong, but he doesn't seem like the type to intentionally relic his guitar.
Could be wrong but it looks like a gold respray over some sort of burst and the spray paint is peeling off. The thing sounds so beefy
@@mustudddI believe you're right.
@@ricksanchezito8972idk man it be looking kind of sus
Stopped by hoping to learn something…stayed for that KILLER tone!!! 🤘
Hey thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video
Been obsessed with the riffs from Psycroptic. Their guitarist, Joe Haley is cleeeeeeaaan bro. I think he uses Locrian a lot, and most of their music is hard af, at least to get it as clean lol. But daaamn I can't get enough of em
C# standard is like perfect use it almost everytime as well as d standard ( plus like the 7 string) currntly i am experimenting with c standard
More guitar theory videos where you explain parts of songs please and thank you.
Yes
Ok this has been hidden from me !!!! I have been playing since the early 80's and slamming my head against a brick wall. I can not believe what I just did and all it took was tuning down to c # , I can now write the sounds in my head, I was always told to stay away from the Locrian mode now I know why it is the holy Grail 😂 and it is so easy to play I believe this video was a life changing experience for me.
I’m currently looking heavily into theory. This was great. My lead guitarist (I’m rhythm) is well studied and I am definitely slowing down our progress. He’s more of a prog metal guy (I’m more thrash) and we actually work well together writing but it takes me too long to wrap my head around what he’s saying. I enjoy the challenge and look forward to this adventure
Great lesson. Can we get the story on this les Paul? It looks like it has one to tell.
Hey thanks! Sure thing. Video coming soon
Hey man, that tone is killer! What amp(sim) are you using?
STL tones tonality Andy James
@@xanderraymondcharles Thanks so much man! Mind sharing the preset?
Love the active in the bridge with the passive in the neck. Best of both worlds.
Hey man, what did you use for the guitar tone in this video?
STL tone tonality Andy James
If you don't know the rules, how can you break them properly?
Trueee
Beato
At 6:52 the Guitar Farts ;)
Brother, no dissing you but it drives me mad: Et Cetera do not have X sound in it. It's T, instead"ex extra", there's "Et", short T :)
Sorry but that's bunches my wool as hell.
So much better looking with emg get a 81 in that axe
It has an 81
@@xanderraymondcharles noice!
"Tone" is in the Locrian ????!!!!!!!!!........................................!!!!!!
Seems kinda dumb that cause your in drop c you want all your songs to be in that key. It’s not that hard to palm mute a song on a different fret. Then when you do hit that open c it’s gonna sound more powerful, and changing keys in songs sound cool, you certainly shouldn’t always start out in the key of c , how many bands do that 90 percent of the time in metal , really boring
Hey you’re welcome to make your own video. But you won’t.
