- Bollywood filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, known for giving epic period films, talks about his film Devdas. He talks about the conception of the idea of the film, picking his cast Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali: "I was alone at home and I opened the book. It was an English version with some 20 pages but every time I read or opened it in my eyes, I would feel nice, I would feel good. Then I said Chalo lets make this film. Then during that time, four-five friends called me saying I think you should make Devdas and I started connecting. I am reading, in my heart also and from outside, it just came in front of me itself."

Absolutely amazing film. Madhuri was the life of this film. She was incomparable be it her acting, dance, beauty. The first hour of the film should have been trimmed by 10 mins.

All three were wonderful and at the top of their game. Too bad bollywood never paired Ash and Mads together in another film, they chemistry was unmatched. Bollywood is so male centered, it would have been nice to see the ladies in a female buddy movie

I remember my mom forced and took me for this movie I was in 2nd standard and today I thank her for making me witness this classic in the theatres. I remember getting goosebumps even at that age and till date it doesn't fail to make me feel the same way everytime I watch it. SRK just nailed it.
Ghantaa nailed it... overacting at its peak..yes some scenes he did well but mostly it was overacting with lot of stammering...i too watched it in theatres when it released and I was 12 year's old.. barring the visualisation and songs .. acting aspect was decent

The movie was going so boring until the character of Chandramukhi played by Madhuri Dixit stepped in,she is the heart of the film jinhone is film mein chaar chaand laga diye.Anyone could play the role of Paro but no one could play the role of Chandramukhi the way Madhuri Dixit did.She is simply phenomenal,perfect and most importantly effortless.Her approach towards playing the character,dancing, grace,nuances(adayein),dialogue delivery, expressions and body language are always bang on and outstanding.She delivers what is exactly needed from her,neither more nor less but always in proportion....Uff sach mein maar daala ❤️

only read if you can bare the truth :
devdas was a drama sold on all three names Srk,Aish and MD. You can have your fav performance pick but you can't discredit or say any one runned the show or simply “stole” as all had equal time space. even when the film released srk performance was appreciated the most rather than the ladies which was bit unfair! i personally enjoyed first half more rather than second as SRK Aish had life and sensuality in their chemistry which i never saw in SRK MD. Also Aish was very new to industry compared to SRK MD at devdas time but Aish equally did justice to Paro and made it unforgettable like no one else could have done. Paro was the hero of the film at many notices and Aish looked throughout a living painting in whole film. Aish managed to stand out even while having two senior and experienced leads which is commendable so i don't know why people love to discredit and ignore her impactful work. The biasiness and hate towards her is so real and visible. Bhansali was a visionary director thats why Aishwarya Rai was his first muse and slb got his first break even after having Aish in his film. Salman wasn't even able to save khamoshi at its own whereas Aish was already a big name even before HDDCS success!
