It's very interesting to see in their early songs, before they had the budget to have a full orchestra, how Tuomas was filling that space with keyboard work that's less used in their latest stuff. Truly a master.
LOVED IT! Love their old stuff, I gotta say that album Oceanborn is the BOMB! Fast, in your face, Nightwish finding their sound on their 2nd album (I never really got into their first, Angels Fall First...)
This song is from an album called Oceanborn, which has a huge Power Metal vibe, a lot of double kicking and speed guitars... One of the best NW albums (if not the best). Funny thing is, it's white and black to the actual Nightwish.
Hitting the keys got better for Tuomas in 20 years for sure. But this was the song that got me into Nightwish. And I stuck with them until the Anette era. Poor Anette just had too big shoes to fill in my opinion. Sometimes I can kick myself for not following them in the Anette period though, since it seems they made some of their best music then. Floor made me join the army again. What an amazing band this was and still is. More unpolished back then perhaps, but still amazing. Love your reviews Chase.
WOW, this video is old (20 years). The one who is singing is Tapio Wilska and the bassist is Sami Vänskä (was replaced by Marco in 2001). Tapio also sang in Devil & the Deep Dark Ocean. But I guess you already know all this since I'm commenting 2 hours after the premiere lol :D. Also, young Tuomas looks wierd :D
Thank you so much for reacting to this song! Never seen reactions to Pharaoh Sails to Orion before. It is one of my favourite songs, I remember when I was 14 and watched the whole DVD like every week 😂
If you're into Tarja's long vocal lines, you should definitely check her solo work - songs like Crimson Deep, Deliverance, Supremacy(Muse cover), Still of the Night (Whitesnake cover).

If you want a "long masterpiece" with Tarja, go for Beauty of the beast (there is a very good live version in Amsterdam from 2002). It is the first "long masterpiece" (10 min long I think) of Nightwish; older than ghost love score. This piece is probably their most complex song, there is a lot going on and you will certainly love it !
Tapio Wilska is the guy here, who is doing the deep aggressive vocals. He is the vocalist of Finntroll, and has guest appeared in a couple of the older Nightwish songs, even on the most recent tour (Decades 2018) he sang live with them during this song which was on the setlist. Decades featured many songs that have not been played live in many years, and even some newer songs. Most of the songs on that setlist will never be played live again. It was like a time warp journey. For most of us who have been fans since the Tarja era, it was an incredible experience to have. This was also before Marko, the bassist here would be Sami Vanska, who departed nightwish due to "creative differences" if I remember correctly. This song was the first song I'd ever heard by nightwish back in 2000, after my mom had showed me. I use to be very into black metal and such. You interviewing Tuomas? Truly a dream worth....chasing.... Heck what is wrong with me today. XD And all the questions have been answered already anyway. That performance is a great example of the time before they "realised" that they "don't need to show off anymore for the sake of it". So yeah, there is much to pay attention to and somehow you're the machine that does instantly notice every damn thing. I don't know what magic that is, but kudos! You said yes to the best genes!
What a pleasant surprise to see a reaction to this wonderful classic! I'd love to see you take a side journey sometime into some of the lesser-known Nightwish songs--like, do a rough frequency analysis of the suggestions you get, pick a few that have gotten the *fewest*. For example, I don't think I've ever seen anyone--ever--do a reaction to "Beauty of the Beast" (not Beauty AND the Beast, different song--confusing, I know). I went looking, but I couldn't find a good-quality live version. I always had that song and Ghost Love Score back-to-back in my playlists, they're both long epics. Anyway, keep on keeping on and have a great day!
Another fantastic reaction. With all the praise thrown Emppu's way this time, you should check out " Whoever brings the night " completely written by him.
After being subscribed and watching these reactions I find myself picking out bits of the music and vocals that I wouldnt have normally noticed when listening to songs, and I've learned quite a bit too, keep up the great reactions and have damn good days.
O/T: She has a holiday album re-release of her 2017 "From Spirits and Ghosts (Score for a Dark Christmas)" with some new tracks and her voice really does shine in her element.
Regarding your questions about songwriting: I remember reading somewhere that the genesis of this song was when Emppu presented a very oriental/egyptian sounding riff to Tuomas and that the entire song was built around that riff. But I read that probably ten to thirteen years ago so I might misremember things. Also, your initial reaction was so priceless. That was the look of a man who came into this expecting symphonic metal and instead got a fistful of power metal right into the face. You should do more early Nightwish stuff. I mean, their current symphonic stuff is great, but don't look down on their power metal days.
I was 46 in 1999. The Oceanborn album changed my life. This is the Platonic ideal of a TPSTO performance. I love my compratiot Floor, but she is never going to be doing this one.

Please do Creek Marys blood (you'll find it in Tarjas youtube channel). It's still a Nightwish song and something you have never seen before, I promise 🙏🙏🖤🖤
Hee, I was just listening to this today and thinking you're going to have a field day with it once you get around to it. One of my absolute favourite NW songs, very ambitious one too for its time. Sometimes I'm just astounded by the fact that Tuomas wrote this stuff when he was barely even 20.

What a treat! This was one of my favorites from this album way back in the day. I'm not sure anyone else on the internet has done a reaction to it, and I'm looking forward to all the Nightwish Saturdays in the future where that's a fact. For that Fifth Element feel, check out Passion and the Opera. It's from the same album, and I'm not sure there's a live version online, but it's another cool old one that Tarja really shows off on.

Beauty of the Beast is THE OG Nightwish epic, before GLS, tPatP or GSoE, and I love it! Wish it was reacted to at all...
Another fantastic reaction. With all the praise thrown Emppu's way this time, you should check out " Whoever brings the night " completely written by him.
Great analysis Chase, and also loved the sense of discovery. This is sort of Nightwish 1.0. Love it.
They look so young. I am getting so old!
Can't imagine this song live without Tarja
Oceanborn still their best album to this day. I love all their stuff but the magic of Oceanborn cannot be topped.
I agree!
I was 46 in 1999. The Oceanborn album changed my life. This is the Platonic ideal of a TPSTO performance. I love my compratiot Floor, but she is never going to be doing this one.
You’re able to pick a favorite? 👀
Oh my god I love this song, one of my favourite Nightwish songs!
I am so happy you did this one. I haven't seen anyone big reacting to this and it's one of my favorite live performances.
The guy singing is Tapio Wilska. He was a guest vocalist on some of their songs before Nightwish hired Marco. Sami Vänskä was their bass player for their first few albums, and Marco replaced him when they did their Century Child album.
Outstanding composition and a perfect performance.
Please react to the siren - end of an era concert with Tarja, this is the real Nightwish,Floor is great but Tarja brought that cold mystery fantasy
As I started back into the old NW catalogue- this is definitely one of my favorites!!!!
The end definitely gave me Fifth Element Vibes. Have a Damn Good Day Chase! Thanks for all your hard work. Much love from Minnesota 💗
A favorite of mine from the older days is Over The Hills and Far Away.
No, it isn't Marco. Sammy was the original bass player but he did not sing. Marco started with Nightwish in 2001.
This is a REAL NIGHTWISH...!!!
Can't believe you mention the double snare hits in the end but completely missed that he switched to playing triplets with the feet :O
That was great! Thumbs up, as always, for Chase!
You're like the musician equivalent of a rocket scientist.
Major Throwback Nightwish Saturday ! Can’t wait 😎
Please do Creek Marys blood (you'll find it in Tarjas youtube channel). It's still a Nightwish song and something you have never seen before, I promise 🙏🙏🖤🖤
Great! That is all! Have a damn good day!
8:16 - very very agressive speaking... that got me good! XD
Hee, I was just listening to this today and thinking you're going to have a field day with it once you get around to it. One of my absolute favourite NW songs, very ambitious one too for its time. Sometimes I'm just astounded by the fact that Tuomas wrote this stuff when he was barely even 20.
i love your reactions! and i am so glad to see that you continue your journey backwards and star on the previous era… this concert is amazing!!! AMAZING!! there are so much songs in oceanborn! gethsemani is one of my all time favourite, stargazers, deep silent complete… arghjjj i cannot choose!
Tarja Undertaker ( Live in Milan )
The studio version of this is also incredible
What a treat! This was one of my favorites from this album way back in the day. I'm not sure anyone else on the internet has done a reaction to it, and I'm looking forward to all the Nightwish Saturdays in the future where that's a fact.
For that Fifth Element feel, check out Passion and the Opera. It's from the same album, and I'm not sure there's a live version online, but it's another cool old one that Tarja really shows off on.
Just in case you happen to see this, thanks for all the great times and I truly hope for many more Chase!
Oh man Chase, taking me BACK to one of my favorite Nightwish tunes
Creek Mary's blood plus Stone people Hartwall Arena is something you must see!!!
Tarja Turunen - Ave Maria. Nightwish Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan. Creek Marys Blood. The Siren. End Of An Era. Live.
Nice selection :) totally with you on this
