Ive watched and listened to jsut aobut every interview with the great McCullin but this is the best , most relaxed and revealing. so well played to Marilla as well as Don
Don McCullin's undeniably a great photographer, but such a humble man, and credit to Mariella Frostrup too - she's an intelligent, well-informed and sympathetic interviewer.
Great In Convo Mariella, I too had the privilege of seeing this exhibition last year, spine tingling. This man is awesome and huge kudos for your thoughtful questions.
He's just a brilliant man , it's difficult to describe him in a way , such humanity , humility , honesty so very compelling to listen to , all this from a background of poverty and violence , he's just right up there with literally anyone I've ever listened to in my 57 years ! Brilliant , Brilliant man !
I was introduced to Don McCullin's work when I was 20 (circa 1985) when I came across Hearts of Darkness at the library. He's been a favorite ever since. It's weird how, when I try to put into words what is so great about his work, it seems so insufficient or cliché, no matter what I come up with. Lol
I'd like to think those 40,000 negatives will be processed some day and will be assessable for all to see and not just in £40 books for his families estate. What a great man with a remarkable memory, a proud English man like myself.
There was one big difference between the Soldiers and McCullin .. McCullin never got broken and brainwashed prior to heading onto the battlefield .. whereas the Soldiers get all their ego, vanity, sillyness, fear, doubt, sarcasm etc. knocked out of them until it gets to the stage where you are basically formatted then re-programmed to prepare you mentally.. Poor Don just dived straight in at the deep end.. the deep end of hell.
I once saw Michael Atherton interview Shane Warne , and he said ( words to the effect ) Shane you are so very competitive , when you retired from cricket , you didn't take up photography you took up golf ?? ...Sort of meaning that Golf is so very competitive and photography isn't , one suspects that Atherton has never met Don McCullin !

Proper in-depth conversation , food for my soul & spirit. Well done 👌🏼🎩✨
The best interview with Don McCullin I've watched. And I've watched a fair number of them.
I saw this exhibition Dec 2015 and by the time I had reached the photographs they are sitting beneath I was weeping.
Great photographer and humble man, really enjoy listening to him.

This was a wonderful and insightful watch with a photography legend. Don is one of our finest photographers, such a humble gentleman.
Such a brilliant photographer and amazingly humble and honest storyteller.

Great talk! The Robert Capa quote is "If your pictures aren't good enough, you aren't close enough."
Superb interview thank you to you both.

such an inspiring man.
He shot for 50 years but for some reason in all his interviews i have seen so far they keep showing the same 5-6 images. ;(
