"If you were wrong, how would you know?" The only wrong answer is "But I'm not." Applies to absolutely everything, newly acquired knowledge and deepest held beliefs about yourself and the world. it's a vital question for growth and isn't for answering in public.
When something bad happens, I ask myself "what if it was a gift?" This comes from Dr. Robert Glover's book "No more Mr. Nice Guy". I find it often turns the issue into an opportunity that I can be grateful for!
Struthless: "... it failed because of you and you know exactly why. What happ-" Me, answering before he even finished the sentence: "PROCRASTINATION" 🤣
"Let's take that thing that Anxiety is making you think about anyway and put it to the productive use for which the Anxiety developed in the first place." This is something that I have been trying to get nailed into my head for a while and this video was the hammer I needed.
"How would you assume someone you look up to would handle this situation?", "How would you assume you would teach a solution to someone else who is learning?", and "How would you assume someone you don't get along with would handle this situation?" Often, putting the issue through the "car wash" of observational shifting allows you to take up the role and lean into it a bit more. It is the leverage of this question I use all the time when I attempt to be a human once a year: "What don't you want?" often used when people have a really hard time picking where they want to go eat as a group. If you ask where they want to go, they have a million choices. When they know where they don't want to go, they often have one choice that pops out right away.
@wanderingrandomer agreed. My hardest thing to do is justify my existence. If I had to convince the Survivor jury why I deserve to get the million dollar prize, I would lose every time.
@@llareia Exactly. Like he mentioned in the video, we tend to think about our flaws as things we’ve done in the past, and we can’t change the past. But when we’re thinking about the future, it puts the idea in our head that we can change; both change the outcome, and change ourselves in so much as “fixing” our flaws. Chances are we already know our flaws and are thinking about them. But this questions let’s us think about how we can get around it and will help us avoid pitfalls as we go. LOVE the question!
For reference, these are the questions and their original framings as I interpreted them: - You start a project and in 6 months time it fails because of you. Why? (→ How can I improve the likelihood that I succeed in this project?) - What would this exact situation right now be like if I had no arms? (→ what am I grateful for?) - What haven’t I noticed in this room before? (→ How can I be more present) - If I were to make this decision many times over (say 5) which decision would likely result in the best outcome in the pick-a-path book of my life? (→ Which decision should I make?) - What are 30 solutions to this problem? You have limited time to list them (say 5 minutes). (→ Which decision should I make?) - What would this look like if it were easy? - Tim Ferris (→ How can I get this done?)

Man I love the way you think, like it's nothing typical that you see on youtube when people talk about life advice and stuff. I usually feel kind of desperate after watching those like they are not about me at all, like others can take it and make it and I'm just not it. Guess finding you here was so relieving, you're so curious and fun about seemingly serious stuff. You're relatable to me because you've talked about your previous lifestyle and your ADHD, and in that way seeing you finding your way and getting playful with it is in fact inspiring and so nice. Keep on going you lovely bastard and thank you for sharing!
I like the chose-your-own-adventure-book question because it makes me be more specific. I have a ton of paths I'm interested in, but a kids' book can only have so many options and you have to choose a specific action. If I were reading an adventure book and the options were A) write a book or B) write an album, I couldn't pick because that's too vague. Now if it's A) write the sequel to your favorite book or B) produce an album in the style of your favorite artist, that's a lot more telling.
I've seen some cool tricks in Choose your own adventure type books too (possibly the ones aimed at adult geeks rather than kids to be fair :) ). Like some actions make no difference to your plot but they might help or hurt someone else. Sometimes a path seems very different to another but they lead to the same place... and sometimes you get locked in a no win situation, where, figuratively, you just have to close the book and start again.

I've been following your channel for quite a while and have loved watching your journey and how much your videos have changed and evolved. I'd say this video here is one of your best (and as an aside, and probably a minor thing, but the editing here is fantastic). Anyhow, keep up the amazing work and thank you for all you've done and continue to do.
It’s crazy how much more motivating it is to get your sh*t together when you’re looking at it at fear of failure vs. to why you’re actually doing it. Im starting a UA-cam channel to be a full time artist because that’s a lifelong dream for me vs. the fear of being stuck at a job forever that I genuinely hate doing. This method forced me to look at it from a different angle and how to use fear of failure in a positive way.
Love the chutes and ladders boardgame subtle nod ☺️ even if unintentional, your way of explaining more complex processes is novel and refreshing. Always enjoy your stuff! 👏
I was on the verge on abandoning a project I hadn't found time to do it in a while. Was frustrated with slow progress, so had started deciding it was beyond my current skill level/not meant to be/trivial and pointless. Been fully blind to how I've dropped so many projects halfway for these exact reasons. Thanks to prodding from this video, I made a few hours today and made myself pick up the project again, and it was so satisfying and fun. And to think my immediate answer to "why did your project fail" was "but they don't, I always finish the thing!" No self- awareness. Thank God 4 Struthless
Thanks struthless, I needed this. I've noticed that I keep putting things off when I've been planning to work towards goals at specific times. I will be setting more alarms to keep me more on track with steps towards my goals. :)
Campbell, so proud of you man!! You're videos are insightful and entertaining and just listening to you makes me smile and laugh. The whole good feeling vibe that I get from watching your videos!! Rooting for you!! 🍻🍻
Immediately after hearing that question I applied it to myself and have found it things to make better in my projects. (Less than a minute into the video)
Watched this video several times, especially the part around question 2 of making hard decisions. I am in a similar life situation with deciding of where to live and possibly moving to another country. Would love a video on making hard decisions but also seeing how you navigate the process surrounding this big life question and how youre figuring out where to move to, etc! Thanks so much again for another supportive video! 🤙🏼
Give the person a place of agency within the question, and a scenario with specific parameters with which they must answer it, add fun, urgency, or clever redirection, so the question produces better results by first disarming the person's defenses to the seriousness of the question, and instead encourages they immediately find a solution or do so joyfully, thereby preventing paralysis or dread from having asked something that will yield a deep response, and therefore effectively producing those deeply needed answers. The deep and or compelling or effective answers/responses that made the question valuable to ask to begin with. The formula of a perfect question. Sheer genius. ❤
Love the editing in all your videos everything just goes together so smoothly. Not sure if I mentioned it before. But no matter the topic your videos really stand out as unique. Also looking forward to the journal!
I love your videos! Always so rich in content and ideas. A couple of things in this made me go "hold on, I do that" and then realised that's because I got them from one of your previous videos!
Brilliant! Pre-mortem - If my channel fails it’s because I wasn’t consistent enough! I’m going to add one short a day to my to do list. I need an accountability partner. Who wants the job?!
It fits that you like 'I Think You Should Leave' (which I'm assuming based on you throwing in some clips in lately), as your sense of humour is great. That's what really makes me like your videos, not only informative and helpful, but just a fun funny watch filled with funness... and with a lot of heart and authenticity showing your personality! Anyhoo, love your work, you rock!! [random note: I originally accidentally typed 'sense of humour' as 'sense of human', haha... that could be a band name...]
"What haven't I noticed in this room before?" Lol, I'm in my bedroom that I've lived in my entire life and also I'm autistic with an extreme attention to detail. I am in a constant state of noticing.
This made me take a very hard look at my flaws in the most easy and enlightening manner, thankyou soooo much, always loved your content and the way it has evolved!!!
I downloaded this video and sent it to myself in a text thread and I’m thinking about setting a reminder for myself to watch it again thats how much this means to me
Though you probably won’t see this comment as I’m so darn late to the party - I just wanted to say thanks so much for the videos you make. I always get much-needed ideas and inspiration from them. As a self-employed writer and sometimes artist, it’s so easy to get inside my head and block myself. Your videos always help to shake me out if that mind loop of ‘can’t’ or ‘it’s too hard’. Really appreciate your work.
Thank you. This is the advice I didn't know I was looking for. I'm a rookie reporter and whenever I go to press conferences, I always feel so afraid to ask questions. And if I ask questions, I always feel like it's lame. Now, I can use some sort of measure to construct better questions. 😮
I screamed premortem! one minute into the video. We use these at the start of IT projects. It's a way of identifying risks early on by creating the space for team members to share what keeps them up at night (eg potential security risks, unclear value, feasibility questions.....) so we spend some time mitigating these upfront rather than waste months working on something and then realize that it was doomed from the start. A bit morbid but we use postmortems too as a way of reflecting (retrospecting) on what the heck went wrong and what went well too (after the fact) to carry over learnings into future projects (ie what to keep doing and what to do differently)
Oh my gosh! I can't begin to explain how much I love this perspective! I am going to be doing so much homework this week on everything that's wrong with me 😂
My favourite questions: To do or to be? (Can be answered for moments, days, phases...) What is something about you that would surprise me? (I love asking this people and always being flashed away by the answers.) What if you died today? (Would this still bother you? Would you be unpresent when speaking to this person? Would there be fear? What can you do today to eliminate what keeps you fearing death?)
Wow what an amazing video. I love this analysis of parts to a question and what makes a good question. I would be very interested to see what’s in that top ten questions list and why they are there!
OMG Campbell, another brilliant, off-the-wall presentation. How do you do it? I'm under the impression you live either in OZ or NZ. If so, I can't imagine why you would want to move. The rest of the world seems to be run by some ungrateful people who have put themselves in charge. BTW Campbell, I started a gratitude list back in 1989, and have been adding to it ever since. Today, at over 54,000 words, it is the size of a book. This has been truly life changing. :-Don
This whole video sort of made me realize something. Of course, it's not universal and won't apply to everyone; nothing truly is, but I was considering the question "how would this look if it was easier?" I was looking at it in the perspective of a book I'm writing as well. And after coming to my own conclusion, I realized something incredible: we often already have the answers to our own questions somewhere in our brains. It just takes a good question to get the answer out of ourselves.
the thing is, with every new video i get super motivated and ready to finally shoot my old self in the head to become all-powerful-- until i sit down to journal and understand that i won't achieve any of the goals because all my energy is taken by living through one day at a time.... unlimited energy pill when??
omgggg I know... this is (in my opinion) one of the hardest challenges with self improvement - also consider this topic currently in research coz I wanna know more about it
Thank you. I’m constantly blaming the fact that I have MS as a reason for my failures in life. And I blame my MS on how badly I treated my body during addiction (probably not the reason I have MS, but it’s the easiest thing to blame)…but when I think about it, there are SO MANY people with MS who are successful and living their dreams. Is their life easy? No, but they’re doing the damn thing. The truth is, I’m a procrastinator. The solution….I’ll get back to you on that one 😅 Very thought provoking. Thanks!
When something frustrating happens: "what do I needed to learn from this?" To make me try to look at it in a different and more positive way Or "how could I act different to prevent this from happening again in the future"
The visuals in this video made me giggle multiple times, great way to make it more fun (this video also made me feel hugely uncomfortable in a good way so thanks haha)
I’ve been trying to improve myself for a while now and the two UA-camrs I keep coming back to for mental clarity are better ideas and struthless. It would be crazy if the two bald horsemen of self-improvement make a collab

I found a that your question "how is this the best thing that has happened to me?" works great for catastrophic thinking. So for example if you're worried about making the wrong decision, you pretend you already made the wrong decision and ask yourelf how is that the best thing that could've happened.

Thank you for existing.
And making these videos.
And being you 🙏🏼
Soooooooo stoked for your journal!!!
That's awesome
i love journaling questions and prompts and this video is exactly what i wanted!
love the combination of ur personality/humor/references with incredibly thought provoking information
I'm already buying your question journal in the future. It's happening. Thank you for this awesome book.
Love the editing in all your videos everything just goes together so smoothly. Not sure if I mentioned it before. But no matter the topic your videos really stand out as unique. Also looking forward to the journal!
I love this video - solid journalling questions. Excited to see your journal when you launch it!!!
I love your videos! Always so rich in content and ideas. A couple of things in this made me go "hold on, I do that" and then realised that's because I got them from one of your previous videos!
I’ve been really loving your content recently! Your storytelling is amazing and I’m always left inspired by then end :))
Brilliant! Pre-mortem - If my channel fails it’s because I wasn’t consistent enough! I’m going to add one short a day to my to do list. I need an accountability partner. Who wants the job?!
If I fail, it's because I didn't block off time to write more. And that's such a useful thing to learn!
Yo - this is rad. And I'd love to be your accountability partner. Wanna chat about it?
your accountability partner is gonna be them UA-cam analytics😂
I want to memorize all of these, it seems genuinely helpful in *everyday* life to reframe things like this
It fits that you like 'I Think You Should Leave' (which I'm assuming based on you throwing in some clips in lately), as your sense of humour is great.
"What haven't I noticed in this room before?"
Lol, I'm in my bedroom that I've lived in my entire life and also I'm autistic with an extreme attention to detail. I am in a constant state of noticing.
This made me take a very hard look at my flaws in the most easy and enlightening manner, thankyou soooo much, always loved your content and the way it has evolved!!!
Thank you for existing.... I'm really grateful for your videos
You're truly a gem! Your content is always so hopeful and easy to incorporate in our lives... Mad respect ❤️
I downloaded this video and sent it to myself in a text thread and I’m thinking about setting a reminder for myself to watch it again thats how much this means to me
Appreciate your work man
Also friggin exited that you're working on another book :)
seriously man your content is life-changing.
Really appreciate your work.
your advice is so helpful man i honestly cant thank you enough for doing what you do
This channel is a blessing ❤ sincerely glad it exists 😊😊😊
This is one of the best videos I’ve seen on UA-cam, and I watch a lot of videos on UA-cam
I am going to be doing so much homework this week on everything that's wrong with me 😂
Lol I feel that. But it's only human!
@@allyson-- well to error is human but I am in all seriousness excited to try this approach and see how much it will help.
My favourite questions:
To do or to be? (Can be answered for moments, days, phases...)
What is something about you that would surprise me? (I love asking this people and always being flashed away by the answers.)
What if you died today? (Would this still bother you? Would you be unpresent when speaking to this person? Would there be fear? What can you do today to eliminate what keeps you fearing death?)
This was truly fantastic! Love all your videos but this one really hit home. Thanks man!
I've been watching your videos for just oover a year now and I genuinely love your content! Keep being you :))
“Go on, you piece-a-shit” totally cracked me up! 😂 on a serious note… not sure why I’m so terrified of trying this... but I’ll give it a go.
You've nailed it with this concept. Will defintely be using this approach. Awesome Video
I was laughing so hard at the stairs analogy. This is an S-tier video for constructive reflection. :D
:-Don
This guy blows my mind every video 🙌
This whole video sort of made me realize something. Of course, it's not universal and won't apply to everyone; nothing truly is, but I was considering the question "how would this look if it was easier?" I was looking at it in the perspective of a book I'm writing as well. And after coming to my own conclusion, I realized something incredible: we often already have the answers to our own questions somewhere in our brains. It just takes a good question to get the answer out of ourselves.
Great video brotha! Your exercises always make me face my imposter syndrome demons haha (In the best way possible tho!)
Your videos are always exciting to see in my notifications!
I just love all your videos!!! Was just thinking “ I need one””… and here you are!! Thanks Man!
I love finding your videos in the morning on my way to work, way to start the day!
Thanks Cam!😊 I never really thought about the quality of the questions I waa asking myself before. Ask better questions.🎉
the thing is, with every new video i get super motivated and ready to finally shoot my old self in the head to become all-powerful--
until i sit down to journal and understand that i won't achieve any of the goals because all my energy is taken by living through one day at a time....
unlimited energy pill when??
omgggg I know... this is (in my opinion) one of the hardest challenges with self improvement - also consider this topic currently in research coz I wanna know more about it
0:37 - I can't recall the last time something elicited tears from me that quickly.....
you are so inspiring!! love the way you think about things. thanks for the amazing content :)
The solution….I’ll get back to you on that one 😅
Very thought provoking. Thanks!
When something frustrating happens: "what do I needed to learn from this?"
To make me try to look at it in a different and more positive way
Or "how could I act different to prevent this from happening again in the future"
omg, this is amazing. thanks for your videos! I needed some motivation and I think this is it! :D
The visuals in this video made me giggle multiple times, great way to make it more fun (this video also made me feel hugely uncomfortable in a good way so thanks haha)
Great question to ask yourself, and this would also be a 100x more interesting interview question than "what are your weaknesses?".
I heard Slavoj say the role of philosophy is not to provide answers but to ask the right questions... Great video
I’ve been trying to improve myself for a while now and the two UA-camrs I keep coming back to for mental clarity are better ideas and struthless. It would be crazy if the two bald horsemen of self-improvement make a collab
Great vid! Also Waymo is alive and well although no longer a part of Google. I live in a pilot city for them and have used it a few times. A car that freakin drives itself. It’s crazy.
"super defensive and full of self loathing"!!!! that's my normal state. LOL!!
I found a that your question "how is this the best thing that has happened to me?" works great for catastrophic thinking. So for example if you're worried about making the wrong decision, you pretend you already made the wrong decision and ask yourelf how is that the best thing that could've happened.
Woah the pre-mortem stuff is getting me excited
Man I fkin love this channel.
This video is absolutely genius. Thank you
