I think musicals can be really creatively done in film, particularly the style of Chicago. But I do prefer seeing them on stage, I wish more musicals filmed and released stage productions.

I also thought of A Star is Born (2018) and The Wicker Man (1973). They're musicals but they fool us into thinking that they're not musicals because the characters don't break scene when they perform.

A lot of that actually has to do with the difficulty of negotiations and navigating the grey area between stage actor guild standards and screen actor guild standards. That’s why you don’t see pro-shots a lot unless bankrolled by a major company like Netflix or Disney or for non-profit like on PBS.

I worked in the film industry as an assistant director for seven years before calling it quits earlier this year. It’s a tough business and I can relate to the struggle. I was just curious about whether you've seen any Bollywood films when you said you can't get into musicals so I'm assuming (correct me if I'm wrong) that you haven't! That being said there are plenty of great films coming from Bollywood and other Indian film industries at the moment which aren't the usual "break out into song" films and I would love to hear your thoughts on them.

So, my answers to selected questions.
1/ Why aren't i supporting you on Patreon? I couldn't come up with a good reason why not.
2/ If I had the capacity to remake a movie. "Night of the Demon". A truly great horror story turned into a schlocky horror movie. It could be done in the style of "It Follows" on a low budget to great effect.
3/ To impress at a potluck, a classic dessert such as trifle or French Silk Pie.
4/ Best soundtrack ever? The Shining.
5/ I've seen High School Musical so you don't have to.
It's a collection of toxic tropes and stereotypes from the Mean Girl/Female Drag Queen, her screaming queen brother who gaybaits by not being allowed to actually come out, the smart girl who isn't good enough until she embraces prettiness, and the straight guy who is naturally a better singer/dancer/actor than anyone who has worked for years learning their craft.
Zac Efron's charm pulls the movie into a bit better than mediocre. Sadly, his later career indicates that charm can't cover up wooden acting.
6/ Book I'd love to turn into a movie if I had the capacity: Quest for the 36 by Stephen Billias.
Dexter Sinister, a PI who does stage magic and juggling, is hired to locate the 36 living Saints of Kabbalah in order to prevent the destruction of the world.
American Gods and Good Omens show this type of story could be successful.
A recent story that may be in process to become a movie, Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire.
What happens to the children who have come back home from their lives in Narnia, Oz, Wonderland, and all of the magical lands of portal fiction? They are dysfunctional misfits whose parents don't know how to deal with. But there's a boarding school to help them adjust - but at least one of them has become a serial killer.
7/ Period I want to tell stories in. The first Century BCE. The Greek kingdom in Afghanistan is sending Buddhist missionaries to China. The Roman Republic is growing and threatening to become larger than the area conquered by Alexander the Great. Queen Salome Alexandra, the first ruling queen of the Jews, is trying to build a resistance between Judea, Egypt, Persia, and Armenia to hold back the Roman conquest.
And all of that is real history.

    YO A Sphere fan!
That book blew my mind when I was young. The "impossible" animals, the illusions, the psychological trickery... I remember reading the second half of that book during a superbowl and not giving a shit about the game at all....
I also remember being sad when I found out that many critics I respected looked down upon Sphere as something of a Solaris ripoff or just a potboiler with no literary merit. Now I'm obviously more aware of my own opinions and analyses being valid, especially in a society filled with cultural elitism, but it still makes the child inside me happy to see that someone I respect loves one of my favorite books as well.

I will say, musical movies tend to adapt poorly. But musicals as stage productions are far more better and actually seem to be better at using acting and singing at the same time. Good example is Trina's song, "I'm Breaking Down", from Falsettos. You can watch some professionally filmed musicals on Broadway HD and some clips here on UA-cam. But yeah it seems movie directors are generally uncomfortable with adapting muscals to film. A good example of a director seemingly uncomfortable with adapting a musical is Joel Schumacher with "Phantom of the Opera". The actors in that movie generally stand still when singing or walk down hallways, rather like... acting while singing. So yeah stage productions get musicals right and most movies fail it.
