I'm 71 years old now. Farm was sold when I was 12. I ended up in the Marines after high school and then a Phoenix Police officer gor 28 years. I still have the good memories of my childhood on the farm.
Thanks BTP . Get tired of see so much mega equipment running, when out in the country whole lot more smaller operations.I use a John Deere 34 , cut and throw type, one row lol. I'm in southeast ky. My wagons are John Deere 125 s chuck wagons. Only chop about 12 acres for small beef herd. Take pride in keeping my old stuff moving. Our first day chopping with it was on 9-11- 01. A day we never forget. Almost 20yrs ago.
yep we use to chop bout 25 ac with a 1 row..then we bought a new JD 2 row I thought we was big time. lol...the area I live in had numerous dairy farms back in the 80's there is only 1 left it's small and they milk Jersey cows ething has went big in my area..central Ky Barren Co..
Yes Sir....We use a 3 row pull type JD 3960..Have a whole herd of 40 year old tractors...new paint dont impress me much when it comes to the monetary part..
From what I've seen around here, the guys with all the new green or red paint are farming for payments and the boys with the older tractors etc running the same # of cattle are the ones making money. I tell my kids anyone can go buy something - a smart businessman makes it happen with what he has.
@@Boodlemania Yes sir...The mama cows keep my brother and I afloat..There is a whole bunch of 30-40 year old farmers that tore out their Grandfathers fences and hedge rows and farming pastures that were in grass for a reason..I tell them all the time sell that grain in the fall, storage isnt working well last 3 years..Park them semis and go buy 50-100 bred cows so you have something to do in the winter...
@@davehughesfarm7983 I hear you. The size of the operations around here just can't support a bunch of new equipment payments. The revenue streams just aren't large enough.
I went back to the farm July 2019. The farmhouse is gone along with the barn and other farm buildings. New homes have taken over the 80 acres my parents owned a long time ago. It was a little sad. Time marches on. I was blessed with 5 children and 9 grandkids. Expensive at Christmas time
it's great when you are up in the cab of these tractors / harvesters. I'm surprised at how silent it is in the cab. You were easily able to speak to the driver without shouting. Top stuff as usual BTP. 👍👍👍
I used to farm cotton, alfalfa, grains in Cali. Had to sell out because of the water shortage and high price of water from the aqueduct system. I love watching your videos. Reminds me of the happiest time of my life.
We still use a 5830 with a 4/30 head and 7 ft pickup. We mounted a Rotary screen from a 1460 IH combine on the radiator to keep things cool. Pulling a Gehl side dump wagon to open fields would plug the factory screen in less than one load, Wasn't as bad when side filling trucks but would still need to stop every hour just to clean the rad and cool the engine down. Replaced a 802 Uni with the767 supper chopper on it and a 1200 Gehl pull type both with 3/30 heads and the Deere can do more in a day than both of them together could.
Here in Eastern Pennsylvania, my cousin still uses a 5830 with a regular 4 row head. A lot of breakdowns and overheating issues every year. But it is paid for.
I just today learned to operate a forage harvester with this model. My cousins have an almost brand new Dion head on it and a Badger wagon, and I forget what brand the other wagon was but it was (unsurprisingly for us) broken down
We could not pick corn that fast in the mid 60s on our farm just nor4h of Fort Wayne, Indiana. We had an Oliver 70 pulling a corn picker with a wagon pulled by a 1942 Ford tractor. Those were the good old days. Farm was sold in 1959.
We ran a 5830 for years. I wasn’t a fan of it. The radiator would get plugged up and get hot. The auger bed was a pain to change. Too many roller chains. We did have a 784 corn head. That was a nice head. Running a Claas now. No comparison. Love this machine.
rain after planting if they tilled the soil..it washes away causes gulleys ditches..we have planted alfalfa and on some feilds..we would get lucky and light rain..one field we planted got 17 inches we had to go in and fill in ditches and use round bales of hay to stop further washing...one field we planted was so smooth you could drive across in a pickup going 60mph..luck on rain amounts
That was excellent you know for his age that that chopper is doing an excellent job know if they’ve owned it since new talk about getting good value for their money
And when it's all said and done, whatever that machine harvests is worth more because the machine cost is an helluva lot less than it is with a new machine.
Can you start asking the owners how many times those old machines have paid for themselves? It would be interesting to see and hear their reactions. My Ford 5000 and 7600 have paid for themselves every 2-3 years!
Great video!! If your interested in a video of older equipment in action we have a 1990 1680 CIH combine that we use to harvest soybeans and corn with and run a 1982 5488 IH on the grain cart. Our farm is in the southern corner of South Dakota. If interested in doing a video here let me know.
That outside round looks like a pretty miserable job for the truck driver !! Keep the windows up or eat a lot of silage for sure !! Thanks for the throw back video every now and then, you find these guys by accident or know of their operation before hand ?
I think this 5830 is imported from Europe, because it have euro-style white front lights/amber turnsignals In same housing (american have round amber turnsignals/transport warning lights) and that 25km/h speed limit badge on rear. I think it can't go 25mph 😄
There was one of them not far from here. It was a realy bad Machine, always suffering of Major Problems. In the begining it hasn't a Metal Detector, a broken Teeth of the Tedder was a Nightmaire. Your farm is a true oasis of peace and abundance

Can i ask why did your family sell? I just can’t understand why people do that, i often dream with owning a farm one day...
Brings back memories I used to help pack the pile on a 50 Ferguson...10 years old.!!!
It's an oldie but a goodie.
Awesome video. I enjoy watching forage harvesting. It is amazing how big and powerful the harvesters are

That's awesome to see these older harvesters still running.

Cool vintage equipment doing a fine job! That field looks rough as a cob, pun intended.
Great Video. This was the first Chopper I worked with for a Contractor in Germany.
Nice sharing! I never see it before. Thank you.
Can't believe how quiet the inside of the cab was for that year.
Cool video as always...love seeing those older machines in the field 👍
That's a really cool harvester. Amazing the power to be able to cut such thick heavy crop at that speed.
It was neat to get to film.
You have to go to Boehm Farms and get footage of their New Holland 1890 Forage Harvester
I agree
I love this video!

Nice set up. Do you still run the Gehl dump wagon? I have an owners manual for the Gehl Dump Wagon. I hope to use it to 3d print a 1/64 scale Gehl.
Great old machines a lot less headaches 🚜👍
Its probably paid for best part ,nice video
Love to watch smaller spfh. Love the variety of equipment you’ve been doing of lately
I concur..
Very cool! Thank you for the great content!
We still run that same chopper for hay and corn getting ready for a 180acre harvest soon hope she stays together for another year!

I really enjoy your videos. Thank you .
Thank you for watching.

@@bigtractorpower good machine.
As always keep up the good work buddy thanks for everything

Fentastic
Nice video and special to see.
Thank you for watching.
You remembere the good ol days?
Awesome Video!!
Thank you for watching.
I just today learned to operate a forage harvester with this model. My cousins have an almost brand new Dion head on it and a Badger wagon, and I forget what brand the other wagon was but it was (unsurprisingly for us) broken down
Very cool. Forage Harvesters are one of my favorite farm machines.

It seems slow compared to today's choppers. How much silage can that truck haul including the roof, windshield, & hood bunks?
If the corn is milky it sure makes a mess on the windshield. You have to have a bucket of water handy. Been there done that.
Haha!
What size front tires are you running in the 5830?
Look at that little chopper go

No dealers either.HAHA!!.
MY YOUTH! We had a 5730 with the Champion 3000, 4wd, and a rotary screen. I'm really shocked that a machine like this is still being run without one.
Very cool. This 5830 is moving along well. The farm is happy with it.
I wonder why the field is so rough

I always wanted to run a silage cutter.
We used to run a 5460 Deere RWA good chopper for its day.
👍👍
What is the purpose of chopping corn like this as sileage as opposed to picking it in the fall with the corn picker header on a combine?
Machi74005 silage for feeding cows
That was excellent you know for his age that that chopper is doing an excellent job know if they’ve owned it since new talk about getting good value for their money
We have a 5730 and a 7700 chopper.
Old still works , new more headaches and payments
And when it's all said and done, whatever that machine harvests is worth more because the machine cost is an helluva lot less than it is with a new machine.
whats the fuel consumption like on this beast? 2gal an hour?
I do not know. Back then fuel was less than a dollar so it was not as much of a concern as it is today.
The brochure says standard rotary screen... Why does this version have a 5460 type non self cleaning screen?
Can you start asking the owners how many times those old machines have paid for themselves? It would be interesting to see and hear their reactions. My Ford 5000 and 7600 have paid for themselves every 2-3 years!
Need some cover crops on that
Looks like a new silage pad, are they going to mafia block the 3 sides ?
Thumbs up.

I liked the homemade silage wagon. Looked like an old grain truck that broke down and they just chopped off the cab and welded a tongue on. 😁
That is exactly what it is. The truck gave out but the dump box was still good.
Good way to utilize what you have into what you need.
how manyh acres a day ?
This was a 70 acre field. I think it took about 4 days but much of it was after regular work from 5-10 pm.
Back in 1972 the John Deere dealer near home sold a new 212hp 5400 spfh to a guy named Roy Everetts
Very cool. ‘72 was the first year for JD SP choppers. The 5400 and 5200 were big machines in their day.
That outside round looks like a pretty miserable job for the truck driver !! Keep the windows up or eat a lot of silage for sure !! Thanks for the throw back video every now and then, you find these guys by accident or know of their operation before hand ?
I'm interested in a machine like that as I communicate with you
Interesting chopper and head. Not a lot different than the still-current two-row sugar cane chopper that JD makes.

I think it can't go 25mph 😄
It does have the European set up. The 25 is for Kilometers Per Hour. The sales Lititz lists 15 mph/25 kph.
15:00 hope he has his windows closed
Yes they were.
That makes me wonder- how often do their trucks need an air filter change? Lol
We have 5820
Very cool. I have always wanted to film a 5820.
Bad allergic to this stuff gets me like poison ivy
Sorry to hear that.
Poor ole kenworth had silage for supper
No joke. I noticed they had a t-shirt over the breather.
Me j look for a john deere 5800 her in belgium
