What a lovely gesture by Catherine! Funny that she does mention that Sophia was already an Orthodox name. And how smart she is... the moment Elizabeth mentions it was her mother's name, she realizes it's best to accept it. Thanks for posting!

Yes, and I wonder if the real persons acted and said like in this scene - if it is documented - or if it only part of the script for the tv-series.

Sophia was Elizabeth’s aunt in the first true Russian ruler who was a female and a Romanoff for that matter

Interesting scene when the Empress decides to change Fredericka´s name. The way she makes everybody agree with her choice is very subtle but also totally imperious and bossy.
Fredericka , although she wishes to comply and get married as soon as possible, can´t help watching the whole scene almost in total disbelief and bewilderment.Amazing!

I don't understand why they changed it to Catherine when she already had the name Sophia which was used quite frequently in Russia. Elizabeth's own aunt, Peter the Great's sister was also called Sophia.
But the name change must have had its reasons, and the rest is history. Today it would be hard to imagine her as anything else than Catherine the Great.

@@Lily1127channel Elizabeth's aunt Sophia raised a rebellion against the tsar with her lover and tried to take the Crown - Elizabeth didn't think it was a good namesake, ironically. Yekaterina was Elizabeth's mother's name, as well as the name of Elizabeth's parents' first daughter. She was trying to make Sophia feel more like a family member by giving her a family name, as it were.

@@baileyann4300 That's right! Sophia became regent (and then tzarina by usurpation) because the heirs, Ivan and Peter, were very young and Ivan had severe physical and mental disabilities, right? Or am I confusing Elizabeth's half aunt with another Sophia? Anyways, great catch!

Yeah but Russian history also had "good" Sophias, like Ivan the Great's wife, so I wouldn't feel necessary to give her a new name just because of one rebellious Sophia. Maybe Elizabeth had some suspicions that this Catherine would end up just like her namesake, on the throne as empress regnant 😀

@ Yes Elizabeth's aunt was Regent Sophia, for her brother's Ivan and Peter (Elizabeth's father), and then she fought with Peter.

In real life, Peter wasn’t as wonderful at the violin but weirdly enough, I like that it showed he was. It made it seem less biased somehow

I find it interesting that Fredericka doesn’t seem that thrilled by her new name

Fredericka wouldn't work but Sophia would have been fine.

I love this show and no shade to the actors but this scene should be called “The return of the terrible violin acting”

Sophie or Sophia was an orthodox name as it was the name of Elizabeth’s aunt the notorious Sophia, Alexia, Romanov, sister of Peter the Great.

It was also Ivan III's 2nd wife, Zoe's, Russian Orthodox name as she was sister to the last heir to the throne of Byzantium aka the Roman Empire. Since the fall of the Eastern Empire, she and her brother resided in papal care in Rome. When she was betrothed to Ivan III, she was given a mission to bring Catholicism to Moscow. A mission she never believed in herself as it is she that created the notion of Russia being the Third Rome and heir to the empire along with Orthodoxy. (When one looks at Orthodoxy one must understand that changes within the church are so very rare, unlike the Roman Catholic and Protestant churches. They take pride in traditionalism.) Her name change was to satisfy the Muscovites that she was Orthodox and was not a Catholic plant.
If you enjoyed Ekaterina, try Sofia. Another Russian tv series.
