Love the video. I don't get why alot of people don't do anything about protection. I'm happy to see that there are resin artists that do take care of themselves and talk about it
The fact I tend to not use protective gear is why I won't ever post videos online. I don't want to encourage anyone being an idiot like me. Having said that I'm doing better wearing gloves now I've found some that fit tightly but without breaking. And I do use a respirator with any that list it in their ppe instructions.
Hey Stephen spill again. Don't worry about them a-holes out there that give you a hard time you're just out here trying to help people. Safety is first and I really like that with you. You keep doing what you're doing, because it's a great job. Thank you your friend bill
I just tip my silicone cups upside down after I use them ( I have the silicone mats lol) and the resin pours out and is Easley pulled once it sets. Cam turn them inside out an use a wipe then to clear. That's just a technique I found easy to use though.
Since you first told us how to clean up, I much prefer using the non-alcohol (and unscented) baby wipes. You also benefited our local Humane Society, who now uses them in their big adoption van. They had plenty of toxic cleanup options, but this became their go-to for those 360 mile trips to the big adoption center in Portland, Oregon. So the animals in their crates don’t have to smell the awful stuff for all those miles. You never know where your good help will land, thank you for sharing ☺️🙏🐾.
Such a large amount of valuable information. I've gone back to watch your videos on PPE many times, I'm still learning from them. What you showed today is so useful to know. Especially about WHY NOT to use a torch... The camera even picked up the torch causing the resin to smoke. People sometimes forget that resin is flammable!! Thanks again for teaching some and reminding others of us of proper resin safety!!! 🎶🎶🎶📽🎥💖💋
Steve, only kick back should be good things! You are an incredible and smart teacher. You damaging your own things to show what can go wrong only hours to show how much you care and want others to know so they don't make the same mistakes you have made. Just remember Steve, not every student will understand at that moment, but later on when it has come to realization, they will think back to when the teacher took the time to educate them and say, oooh now I get it! He knew what he was talking about and I should have paid attention and listened. And Steve, you are a teacher!
I noticed that when I don’t get all the little bits of dried resin out of my mixing jugs, it can change the measurements, they’re off by the volume of the stuck-on bits.
Thank You Steve for showing everyone simple ways to make their resin experience safe, fun, effective and economical. I learn something new with every video you share. You also remind me of some of the common mistakes that can be avoided with a little patience. Most of all you remind me to have fun and be myself. You are truly appreciated.
Thank you for telling people about the fading alcohol inks! I get so sad for people who have no idea the lovely petri art and such will often look like vomit in just a few weeks to months. So disappointed when I realized that the hard way. Always useful info 😁
I am so glad i ran into this video because i was going to by a torch for my jewelry molds. WOW THANK YOU!!! I am on a serious budget and cant afford to lose any materials. So this kept me from a huge loss. Steve. You're appreciated!
I have always used a torch, which has ruined a couple of my molds 😥 but I have learned to just not get too close to the mold and go quickly over the resin. I haven't lost a mold in about a year (been resin casing about 2 years). I tried the hot water and freezer tricks,, you're right they do not work! I love your projects and can't wait to see more!
I'm just a beginner but I've been watching tutorials for almost a year and yet there's still be info in this. I'll try wiping out the silicone cups right away. I've left them to cure until the resin was set enough for demolding and then turned them inside out to clean out the bits. That's worked well so far for me but maybe I DID reduce their lifetime...
Thank you so much for your videos. I have done a little bit of resin work in the past but had several issues getting my pieces to the level that I've wanted them. I have learned more from you and your videos than I have from any other source and I really appreciate it!
Thanks so much for all the great info! I generally prefer to use a heat gun vs any kind of flame or torch. My molds have lasted longer, and it doesn't cause any fires with alcohol ink fumes.
I have several old clothes I only wear when using resin and they work well. I have found using resin that is VOC free & odor free is a must with asthma & I can't risk issues with my lungs. Craft Resin & Naked Fusion Art Resin are the 2 I've used. The only problem is they are both pretty high priced. I have to say I really enjoy watching your videos, Steve. You have a fun and natural way about you & you are willing to include us in your experiments - even when they don't work. I've learned more about resin from you than several others I watch and I thank you for that!! You are a good teacher. Keep up the good work!
Really informative Steve, thanks. As you know I've just started using Epoxy. I did have quite a few bubbles when I mixed - probably due to mixing to fast. Plus it did start to cure in the big mixing pot!
I remember you speaking about alcohol vs baby wipes so since my classes gave been done I bought a large pack of baby wipes to have. As for the jugs I use to leave them to cure and got so annoyed with peeling it off but started to use the baby wipes and soooo much easier. Thanks a lot
Thank you for getting back to me, I was asked by a friend to do a pour and resin on a pair of designer eye glasses, thank you for reminding us to be cautious and to follow instruction , thank you
Thank you Steve none of that resin or molds were lost in vain… I appreciate all your tutorials. My question is… Can you use a heat gun to get air bubbles out instead of a torch so you don’t ruin your molds?
I'm really glad that I found your videos! I want to get started with resin and haven't seen any other videos mention using PPE. I'm adding that to my initial setup!
I’ve got a resin that hasn’t set properly yet and it’s 2 days since I poured it. It is setting slowly, I think I didn’t make enough hardener for it. I’ve taken it out of the box where I was letting it cure and popped it on top of one of my heaters. Hopefully it will all go to plan and will cure
Thank you so so much for taking the time to make this video!!!!! I am so happy i stumbled upon this channel!!! Your video is amazingly perfect, easy to understand and so helpful!!!!!!!!! I'm now going to bingwatch your others!!
omg thank you so much, I am just about to pour for the first time in a silicone mould and I was totally going to use my torch! Phewph! I will now use a lighter....
Thank you for that video. It's very informative and very helpful to see what can actually happen. I only use a heat gun on my resin. Knowing me if I used a long neck lighter I would end up catching my mold on fire or at least melting it!
Thank you. I watched one is your earlier videos about using a torch or someone's anyway and have always been wary of doing so. I did see a video of putting resin in the oven but no idea what temp to make them cure faster... Have not tried that.. to nervous about putting chemical fumes in my oven. I don't wear a mask all the time but I work next to 2 windows and a ceiling fan over my head plus I purchased a mixing pot that allows me to mix up to 40ml at a time. And I can go in the kitchen and do something while the pot is mixing for 5 minutes. I do however always tell people to use a respirator. Not everyone has the same open area I have. (I struggle with having claustrophobia due to a long history of abuse). So I do try to take other measures for safety. I also use latex free gloves. And have an apron I can wear to protect my clothing. I am starting up a new business. The Sassy Artisan. When I can get my camera figured out I will be making a video of my crafting areas as I have more than 1 space in our home due to be claustrophobic. But awesome video! And yes people should use proper protection when using chemicals in crafting. Keep up the great work Steve!
I just subscribed and know I'll enjoy seeing your videos. I wish I had known about wearing a mask. I have lost most of my since of smell and much of my since of taste because of resin. Now I use a mask with the good filters. Thanks for letting others know!!
I've heard so much about resin sticking to molds and ruining them but never experienced it (or actually seen it happen until this video) in my 10+ years of working with resin, I also have never used a torch but ordered one last week to try, I'll just be returning that before I even open it and stick with my heat gun and lighter 😅 Thank you for saving me money and molds!
You usually say and show nitrile gloves, but are vinyl gloves ok? Not the clear plastic food handlers’ gloves, the translucent whitish vinyl gloves, are my favorite. But you let us know we might become sensitized later on if we don’t take care from the beginning. Very good video, thank you.
Great tutorial. It's a shame you had to waste money to show these great tips but I really appreciate the fact that you've done it. So many presenters are so blasè with their torch, I would never have guessed how harmful they can be. Equipment and tools are too expensive to mistreat in this way. 👍 for the PPE warning. Again you see so many risking their health you start to think the danger is exaggerated. Thank you.!.
Worked in a factory between 1979 and 1990, was exposed to industrial resins used in the plastic for the automobile industry. It and the dust from the cured resin and the fiberglass that strengthened it, did a number on my lungs. Asthma type symptoms that the asthma drugs don't relieve in addition to getting chest infections easily.
I’m so happy I found you! You are such a stand out from all the others. Just love your videos and help as I am a complete beginner feeling nervous and trying to find the best to learn from.. 😊 thank you 😊
Heya Steve, When using those horrid measuring cups where you can't see the marlins I actually make them clearer by using permanent marker on them This way you can see them Having said that I'm quicker to throw them out than other ones that have proper marlins, if it's too much hassle to clean them up
This has been super useful for me that's for sure!!! I am just getting ready to start my journey into resin. Fear of starting is the only thing holding me back at this point!!! I plan on watching your other videos as well so that I am prepared!! I have purchased the necessary PPE, resin and molds etc. It always looks so easy but you brought up things that I never even thought of so thank you very much for sharing all of this important info!!!!/😁👍🤗
Hi Steve, thanks again for your videos. (Greetings From Melbourne). I was so pleased to hear you say you are buying a 3D printer ( I just bought an Ender 3 as it was a cheap easy first step plus I heard that its not as smelly as others and quiet etc etc) I look forward to seeing what you with yours and what tips you might share. I will be buying you a coffee a bit later, but the Australia Post guy just delivered (silicone for mould making). Regards, Craig.
Wow! I won't be using a torch on my resin! Thanks for the information, it is very helpful.

Yah I've been more cautious on who I follow in the resin world because of their lack of protection
as a retired safety technician, I appreciate your discussion of PPE!

Oh dear I’ve been using a torch, now I know why I have so much trouble getting them out of the moulds. Thanks Steve
Bless you wasting money you can't afford for the greater good of others your truly a star xx
LOVE tip #3. It’s SO helpful to write it on the container, but I wouldn’t have thought of it.
I just tip my silicone cups upside down after I use them ( I have the silicone mats lol) and the resin pours out and is Easley pulled once it sets. Cam turn them inside out an use a wipe then to clear. That's just a technique I found easy to use though.
and tape to get all the little leftover bits ;-)
Nice idea about the tape
That's a great idea we use tape but never thought about just typing then upside down. We've been scraping then taping. Ty so much.
You're such a character - it threw me off at first but I've really grown to appreciate it! Thanks for more helpful insight!

Interesting to see the difference in the "pattern" on the torched and lighter coasters. Nice informative tutorial Steve :D
And this why your the only subscribed group I have you make things sound simple and explain everything plainly
Thank you
@@SteveMcDonaldArtsandCrafts
It’s true you make things sound easy to do
I appreciate you doing all of these tests and experiments, so that I don't have to.
I watched the safety video first! 😁 Thank you!
One of the most useful videos on resin that I have watched. Thanks Steve.
