Most tasteful playing of any guitar channel on all of youtube. Mike, you're wicked talented and seem like the kind of guy I'd love to have a beer with someday.
I LOVE the Classic Player Jags. I remember particularly a time that I played a used HH one at a Guitar Center once for like an hour and a half, and was just absolutely in love with it. The neck felt like home to me, very similar feeling to my Fender Cyclone. The jumbo frets do take some getting used to, I suspect they used the same fret wire on both those Jags and Cyclones. Bends are a breeze though! Pickups were great sounding, too. (Atomic humbuckers? Not sure...) They handled everything I threw at it, from Radiohead to Metallica. Wish I'd bought it but it was during my broke days. Dig the shirt, by the way!
Hopefully one day you will review the Jaguar 60's Lacquer series, would love to hear your take on it! Your review are both fun and education, keep on the great work with teaching us about offset Fender models
Just got one on Reverb for a good price. It was modded to be a single humbucker, one volume, no tone, no rhythm circuit. Its a project... Rosewood, plays great & to my surprise the saddles were filed to 9.5 radius! Stays in tune! Really nice guitar
Tbf Mike, I don't think you need to name the guitarist who uses a tunomatic on an offset and has their action super high, I think we ALL know who you mean haha
Some years ago I committed to removing the TOM thimbles and installing a normal Staytrem and AVRI vibrato, and now my CP JM is my favourite guitar. At the time when the CP was released options for available offsets were kind of... limited. Run whatya brung, I guess! Thanks for an honest review, Mike!
I learned so much about these offset guitars with your chanel. Thank you do much for your hard work of not only explaining but also making all these videos editings. Lot of work here man your rock!
I have '71 Jag, for years it was my only guitar and one that I gigged with. The bridge was often a problem. In retrospect, I cant believe I stuck with it for so many years.
Mike, I got a Squier Jaguar Classic Vibe a few weeks ago. I blame you for stoking my interest in them! It wound up having no setup problems like I expected. It's a ton of fun!
So you are a lucky camper with your guitar . I got mine totaly messed up and after two days one leg of that mustang bridge fell off , lol ! Otherwise I love it , after shimming , a new Fender bridge and fiddling around in every way possible . Have fun !
My JM had been swapped to a Nashville with graphtech saddles. First thing did was get thimbles put back in and switched back to the first offset bridge I could find.
the best bit 25:01 i was wondering if i shall sell my cv strat and buy a fender .... but now i think i may keep my cv strat and get a cv mustang or jaguar :)
I noticed this on my Cobain jaguar. It had string pinging noises coming from the bridge because it was setup wrong from the guitar store. I notice that the high e string is slightly higher in through out the neck due to the radius of the bridge so, I ordered a mastery bridge and a mastery vibrato and will get them installed to bring this guitar up to the best it can be.
I totally miss my jag because of the pickups and just overall feel/sound of the guitar. I had the squier classic vibe. I dont think the pickups are as hot as the Fender CP but if I had to guess the bridge pickup might have been like 9.5k-ish? I've always been blown away by the unique sound/style of Jags every time I play them.
Great video Mike! Despite you not recommending the model, my friend bought one of these for about $280 and I really enjoyed playing it! Love the demos you do and i, can't wait for more. I hope you get your hands on a Vintera 60s soon!
If you put flat wound strings (a set of “11’s” work for well for standard tuning), the bridge works better. Also, if you want a floating tailpiece, the (non Fender) one on Jonny Marr’s signature guitar is available on general sale. ✌🏻
Love my CP Jazzmaster-just put some Lollars in. The neck is a perfect fit-can play on it all day. However, finding a suitable bridge replacement without doweling and drilling has been near impossible. I landed on a tone-pros with rollers (eliminated the rattle and the string grabbing), but the radius is still mismatched. The adjunko-matic bridge is the epitome of a bad idea. Yet they’re still being installed on many a Fender/Squier offset. Time to retire this very outdated mod. As always, I enjoyed the review.
check out halon bridges! they make a 9.5 radius similar to the mastery that drops directly onto the tune o'matic posts! been looking into for my CP JM and have heard great things
i just a bought a fender squier jaguar body from the straoshere 1970 and bought a custom tremolo and bridge package for it from wd music nice stuff and have custom pre wire harnesses from hoag land custom who does a ton of work for fender these were 85 a piece very very high great stuff how can i tell if it a 7.5 bridge or a 9..5 bridge same radius for the neck for it match thanks john
The classic player trem isn't bad. Like a lot of things offset, it just needs some attention. It has an adjustment underneath to set tension. And you can use a spring to keep it in check as well. Feels solid when setup well
Just to be clear, I love your videos and have learned a lot from them. Just think people who have a guitar with a classic player trem or who buy one shouldn't think it is bad or be bummed when it just needs a bit of attention. Clearly not everyone can afford staytrem and mastery, etc.. Mine I just adjusted the screw underneath, and it is really smooth now. Yes it sucked bad before doing so--but so do most offsets without a shim. But that is why the screw is there.. The arm pretty much stays in place, but I might get a spring and loosen the tension screw a bit so it will fit the spring to keep the arm more secure. Otherwise I was impressed with it, and it isn't noisy
i have a classic player jazzy, first i thing i did was replace the bridge with a halon bridge. Its a must for my playing. i do agree about the the vibrato position. i want to adjust that but i don't know how i can and the pickups are too much like p90s. im for sure replacing those in the future, i dont know about the neck pocket. maybe i shouldnt shim the neck. i might get less buzzing.
I bought my Classic Player Jazzmaster in 2011, when the main-brand Fender JMs were limited to AVRI '62 (out of my price range), MIJ/CIJ (difficult to come by on eBay at the time), Artist models from J. Mascis and Elvis Costello, and Classic Player. Had an eBay Horror Story where the guitar arrived to me with the truss rod flipped totally around which rendered it unusable. I got a REALLY nice Warmoth neck for it with big brass frets, satin nitro finish, maple fingerboard, and graphite nut. A couple years ago I replaced the o-Matic bridge with a Mastery. Fabulous axe, minus the threaded trem collar and "technically not" Jazzmaster pickups - which I think have a lovely warmth and singing output, so no matter - and I don't know if you would want to waste time on a quasi-redundant review on the JM when you've done the Jag here, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on the CP Jazzmaster pickups.
I shifted it slightly to play the beginning at the 7th fret on D which just condenses the riff a little without having to skip a string but still in the spirit of the riff.
I have the Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster with the tuneamatic style bridge. I added a buzzstop and have had no problems whatsoever. However, you make a good point about the radius being incorrect.
Did the new Fender Jaguar player have the same modern tremolo placement as the classic player in this video? I'd like to buy one and place a single coil on the bridge as I don't like humbuckers, but the lack of the strangle switch and the modern tremolo placement puts me off. Not having the rhythm circuit it's not a big problem to me as I'd rather have a parralel/series switch instead. This channel is GOLD, you are doing a great service to any jag and jazzmaster fanatic like me. VERY informative. Subscribed!
PS I know that they are very far from a tradictional Jaguar, but they are also the only affordable models right now for my dry wallett and I don't really trust squiers :(
I've got the 2010 HH version of this with the blendable coil split. HUGE range of tones and the humbuckers aren't as hot as people say. Ever tried one Mike? I sometimes feel I want to trade it in for a more traditional Jag, but when push comes to shove I can't part with it!
Ur description of break angle is accurate.. but when using the term in reference to an old les paul it mean the angle and place u will with out a doubt find your head stock to be indeed is actually broken... may be just my experience but I find it's usually some where under the trush cover or under the nut lmao
I never understood this aberration of putting a 12 or 14 inches bridge on a guitar with a 9.5 inch radius neck… But I also never managed to understand if you could really easily replace the TOM bridge. I mean, just by switching, is the gap the same between the inserts for example with a Mustang bridge? The diameter of the inserts, all that? I have a Jaguar MP90, with a TOM bridge, what can I replace it with without having to fill holes and redo others to put in a decent bridge?
My squire classic vibe Jazzmaster doesn’t have any of these issues. The only thing I had to do was put lock tight on the bridge screws so it wouldn’t slowly work itself down. I have 5 other guitars, and the squire classic vibe is the best for the money I have. The only weird thing about it is I got surf green, and the squire surf green isn’t really rich enough. Seems slightly washed out. The only reason I noticed was the fact I have a American Fender strat painted surf green.
The problem is that there aren't many drop-in replacement bridges for these. The models you mentioned sadly don't work with the tuneomatic posts, without some serious modification. Staytrem used to make a drop-in for these, but has long discontinued them.
@@Puisheenhi Puisheen- don’t know if you will see this but I’m looking to trade for one of these- as of December 2022 are there any 9.5 radius drop in bridge replacements? I’d not am I correct in assuming one would ‘only’ have to fill it with an appropriate dowel/glue and then drill for whatever bridge (mastery etc)?
So they're actually putting a 14 inch radius bridge on a guitar with a 9,5 inch radius neck? This would a total deal breaker for me. I mean it's a 1000$ instrument after all.
Love the channel and thought this was a fair review, though it terrified me that I’d made a bad choice in getting a similar vintera jag body drilled for an adjustomatic bridge for my parts Jaguar (new to the offset world and hadn’t thought about the radius issue). With a little work and an upgraded bridge, though, I’ve able to get good action, feel and tuning stability. So far so lucky, I guess. I will go for something more traditional if a get a JM down the line, though.
Many thanks for doing jaguar video (in between x jazzmasters ;) ) just wondering as you mentioned - where to put loctite? can you make some video or notice it in some? :) Thanks!!!
Hey Mike, I've purchased the Squier CV Jag and followed your advice on that setup and it plays beautifully now. I greatly appreciate your knowledge and advice that you hand out on your channel. I recently just purchased a Classic Player Jazzmaster and I'm planning a bridge swap. After some research I'm planning for an American Pro and using some M8 grub screws as the new "thimbles". Is this as a reasonable new bridge setup as I've been reading about?
PS. I filed the saddles to lower the outer strings to better match the radius to fretboard and too the edges off the others and the trem works great and it stays in tune, but I'd prefer to swap it out. Seems like Staytrem is saying theirs doesn't fit Adjustamatic mountings... any advice on replacements other than Mastery?
I have a classic player jazzmaster and the same problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Would a roller style tuneomatic/adjustomatic bridge work?
I don't recommend most rollers, which have shallow grooves and often exhibit even worse rattle issues. Also, if you don't maintain them with proper lubrication the rollers stop rolling, and they're a 12 inch radius as well
Wow, the American Ultra JM got a "soft recommend". I hear what you're saying about the AOM bridge though. I have a modern player with one and I refer to it lovingly as my "Gibson" as it has two humbuckers, no rhythm circuit and a mahogany body. I don't really use the bar much and the Modern Player is used for a band where I tune down the low E to A. I will say that it hangs better with that gonzo tuning than my other JMs, even my AVRI '62 with the Mastery. I feel that J Mascis was brought up in this video without being mentioned.
I was wanting to know about the American Series guitar Jazzmaster. I am looking at the American 1962 Fender Jazzmaster Reisue and some people make it sound as if you need to replace the bridge with a better one and the strings to 11-50 so as the low E string doesn't break? The seller has a Mastery Bridge in stock and from the factory is strung with 10/46 strings. Not sure if they carry Gabriel Tenorio JM50 Electric Guitar Strings 11-50? Do I need to do all these upgrades as some people suggest or is this American model OK out of the box? Thank You!
@puisheen Mike, what are some pickups out there u know of that are in the same class as these? In terms of that output and clarity. These pickups sound great. Thanks
I'm pretty sure I know what artist you're talking about and he also has an adjust-o-matic bridge on his Jazzmasters as well as the action being STUPIDLY high. I really don't know how he plays them as well as he does!
Hey @Puisheen, is it a matching headstock 60's Vintera Jazzmaster that's hanging there behind you in the last 2 or 3 videos? If it is I really would like to know your thoughts about this model. Thanks for all the info and love about offsets. In guitar world, your channel is my favorite
Hi thanks for your great informative input on the Jaguar. Could you help me out a little please ? I’m looking to buy a Jaguar. Which is the best Jaguar out of the box that doesn’t have the flaws as demonstrated in this video ? Thanks mate.
I can't believe they have a 14'' radius bridge on a 9.5 neck that seems kinda shady on fenders part. I got my own issues with a 9.5 nut I put on a MIK strat 12'' neck lol. I didn't even know fender had necks that flat
Hey Mike, can you list the chain or show the pedal images (or names) somewhere in the corner when playing in next videos please? You have such a huge tones here!
Hi! You said you would make improvements on the Classic Player Jag Special. Did you do it? I am super interested in increasing my jag (especially bridge) ! Thank you !
What would you reccomend to make this guitar better? Would it be worthwhile to replace the bridge at all? Or just dial in the setup as best as possible with the guitar as is, stock. I bought 2008 CP and it seems to play great, but I got it used and there is a buzz stop added that I want to take off and am worried it might open up issues. I’d greatly appreciate your 2 cents!
why didn't you measure the bridge radius at the saddles? The D and G string saddles are taller than the other strings, creating a smaller effective radius. Isn't that so?
Hey Mike, do the Fender Vintera model Jaguars have the same issues you found with the Classic Player Jaguars? I don’t believe the Vintera model uses the tune-a-matic bridge. Not sure about the location of the vibrato on a Vintera?

Seems like Staytrem is saying theirs doesn't fit Adjustamatic mountings... any advice on replacements other than Mastery?
I have a classic player jazzmaster and the same problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Would a roller style tuneomatic/adjustomatic bridge work?
i think its worth a shot. i know eastwood does it on guitars with an offset style trem
I don't recommend most rollers, which have shallow grooves and often exhibit even worse rattle issues. Also, if you don't maintain them with proper lubrication the rollers stop rolling, and they're a 12 inch radius as well
Would the mastery hardware on this make up for the initial problems for the bridge and tremolo placement ?
I agree. I do not like tunomatic bridges in offset guitars.
I feel that J Mascis was brought up in this video without being mentioned.
would love to see your whole jag collection:))
Thank You!
I found one with an american vintage jaguar bridge (the kind with the threads), do you think that would fix some of these issues?
@puisheen Mike, what are some pickups out there u know of that are in the same class as these? In terms of that output and clarity. These pickups sound great. Thanks
At min 23:19. Was it improved?
Oh I see you put them but for the short time and not in every lick. Better then nothing though!
Hi! You said you would make improvements on the Classic Player Jag Special. Did you do it? I am super interested in increasing my jag (especially bridge) ! Thank you !
Fender always makes some interesting sounding higher output pickups when they do.
True ! Same with the 'twisted ' lip stick neck pup in the Baja CP
@@michaelworse6034 Fender:
"I don't always make high output pickups, but when I do, they got character."
as usual all the playing is great, but some doom style riffs w that shirt hat combo? Outfreakinstanding.....
ALANA thank you for seeing me haha
Are these specs similar to the Vintera Jags? Not a lot of info on that guitar online..
I'm never selling my HH classic player Jag. I've always wanted a classic looking guitar that can do basically any tone.
Amazing dude!
Maaaan I want to start a band with you!!!! ....u are a BEAST MIKE!!!!!
I replaced the standsrt tunomatic with a Roller TOM-Bridge. (Special HH)
New to the channel and glad I found you as a lover of offsets and proud CIJ Jazzmaster abuser.
Hats off to a fellow SSBS Fuck Overdrive user. It's my favorite OD, even more than the Interstellar Overdriver. So, are you the proud owner of the Christmas Story one?
I tried googling but I get mixed reviews but.. Is there a drop in replacement for a J Masc Squier bridge?
Roller Saddle Tun-a-matic works great on my J.Mascis Squire. Would be cool if someone would make one with 9.5. radius though.
That would certainly make a lot of sense!
Hey Mike, Just recently got a 70s CV Jag, what degree shim did you use or how did you determine which would be best. I just ordered a set.
