Love that the cats 🐈 are helpful! It is absolutely gorgeous! I sprinkled wildflowers in my wood chips where I took out my grass and they took a year to come up then I let them go to seed. Now every year they come up!
This is so beautiful! Almost nostalgic to me of my childhood with flowers growing along our picket fence in front of our two story farm house. We would get all kinds of bees and butterflies. Going to probably do this again but also want to plant some milkweed, it’s been YEARS since I’ve seen a monarch butterfly; I recently found out that they’re now on the endangered species list. Makes me sad. Have to save our wildlife people. I remember when I was little we would have monarch butterflies by the hundreds! I use to catch them with my butterfly net my mom got me and would be very gentle and let them go, even had a monarch butterfly caterpillar cage where you could take care of them and watch them eat and grow and become beautiful butterflies and I’d set them all free in our flower gardens. 🐝 🦋 🌸
I’ve recently decided on a wildflower garden in the front of my house. I am so excited to start, I’m watching different videos cause I want to be informed so I don’t fail. I’m excited for the butterflies and bees!
No way! My family lived there during our childhood and ended up moving about 30 minutes away. Johanna drove to counsel at Heidelberg for several years and still we h e so many connections there.
Such pretty cats. I have a few garden helpers as well. Tried to put a trellis up but Sherlock sat his but right on it like we set it on the ground just for that purpose.
Beautiful I’m going to plant wild flower seeds shortly here in New Zealand. Loved the tip of using the jar with holes in the lid. I was wondering how I was going to distribute the seeds evenly, thanks for that.
I'm so glad I watched this! I'm about to start a wildflower border and I am just getting into gardening. This answered so many questions I had. That shaker is brilliant. I would have made a mess dumping from the bag! Thank you!
Thanks for watching! If you have a sunny spot in your yard I would encourage you to give it a try. Once they get established it’s low maintenance and so enjoyable :)
Thank you for sharing your beautiful wildflower garden ! I have a south west facing perennial flower garden in the front of our home . Every year some die and do not come back. I think instead of continuing to buy replacement plants I will sprinkle in some wild flower seeds . This will more cost effective as well as add more diversity to my garden : )
Thanks for watching! That’s cool you just planted some! Be sure to keep them watered until they come in. It will seem like a bunch of weeds are coming up but the flowers suddenly pop and show up. Then it’s easier to see what needs pulled at that point. Good luck!
I was worried that having a cat on hand to lightly push down seeds after gently covering them with soil was protocol… but FYI, a Yorkshire terrier will also suffice!
Your kitty was making sure you did a good job with your seeding :) When did you plant them? I did this one year out back but without being able to water regularly they struggled really taking off as thick as I would have hoped. Your's turned out great!
Yes, LOL, our kitties are always there to “help” us out :) I am pretty sure we planted it sometime in May. I think the secret to our success was watering them on a regular basis until they got established. I am curious to see how they look next spring, if they come up as thick and healthy. We love the poppies! We have never grown them before but they are so cool! BTW Enjoyed your canning video using the one brine to rule them all!
@@ThisOhioFarmhouse Can you post a link to the bag of seeds that you used? Those flowers are beautiful and I would love to sow some at the end of our driveway.
Search online for Pennington Midwest Garden Wildflower Seed Mixture 24oz bag. We are in the midwest, so it was great for us, but they make other blends for all regions. Good luck!
Nice video thank you for sharing results. Are they still doing well? We are planning to plant some today for our new Bees we got yesterday. Nice job very encouraging.
They were still looking good last summer! If they need a little boost this spring/summer we will sow some extra seeds in the thin areas and probably fertilize.
After you plant your flower seeds lay some small branches on the area and the cats won't dig in it when the plants come out you can remove the branches ( it works )
The colors are so beautiful! But are they perennial? They're all I want to plant in the ground and annuals in pots for the front porch. It saves me money that way.
They won't all self seed but many annuals will self seed. Take Marigolds for example, yes there are perennial marigolds but most are annuals and still come up year after year!
That seed shaker is a good idea, my only issue comes when you have a variation in seed size. I want to mix a Monarch friendly variety with Black Eyed Susan which are very small. Almost think I’ll need two different shakers. I see your cat was helping tamp down the seeds!
If you are planting just a couple types of flowers with very different seed sizes I think making a couple different seed shakers would be fine. However, I think this issue is resolved by having a seed mix that has the proper seed portions and holes that allow the largest seeds to pass through. Think of it like salt and pepper. They can have their own shakers for more control, but you can also mix them together in the right ratio in the same shaker. You can experiment by testing your shaker over a sheet of paper until it looks like what you want. Good luck to you 😃
We didn’t attempt to, but you certainly could. They naturally reseeded the second year and came up just as beautifully. The third year we wished we had over seeded some because it wasn’t as plush.

Germination took place at different times as the different flower varieties took off, but it was in full bloom in in 6-8 weeks I’d guess. I am not familiar with Botanical Interest.

Beautiful garden! I planted my wildflowers end of this April and it’s just starting to bloom now. Do you know why yours bloomed so much quicker ? I live in Northern Virginia.
I don’t remember exactly when we planted the seed mixture, but it was fairly early and probably not far off from when you planted in April. This video was created in August so it took 3+ months for the whole process. We did pay special attention to watering this area also. Differences in soil, local weather and seed mix will play a part as well. I will say that our wildflowers bloomed much sooner this year. We have been enjoying them since May! They came back just as strong. We will need to do some selective weeding in a few areas and we plan to plant another 1,000 square feet area and expand into other areas. They come back but over time ours have required some over seeding. And, I apologize…your question was JUST shown on my end and I noticed it was from a while ago!
@@ThisOhioFarmhouse Thank you for the reply. No problem better later then never. 😊😉 I started mine 3 weeks ago some are already big now. I just hope we don't get more freezing days.
As soon as you can work the ground in the spring. At the end of the season you can just cut them back or leave the seed heads for the birds in the winter.

They are perennials and will mostly return each spring. So far we are seeing some varieties come back stronger than others but they have always come back. It only takes a couple of months, with consistent watering, to get them established and you will start seeing the blooms increase in the weeks following depending on your local conditions.

Hi I truly enjoyed your video. Can you please tell me the name of the brand and the bag? I want to try this. I never seem to have luck with the seeds I purchase. Thank you and take care
I used Pennington Midwest Garden Wildflower Seed Mixture, 24 oz bag, from Lowes. It wasn’t on their website however, but you can find it online. Good luck!
Spring, but like everything, you just need enough days left before your first frost to finish them. The packets usually tell you how many days until you see color
Spring and fall are the beat times to plant the seeds. If you plant in spring, you can plant when the soil is able to be cultivated and you have consistent days above freezing. Wildflower seeds will grow when the conditions are right for them and won’t be bothered by the cold. This is how they survive in nature. Just be sure to keep the ground watered until they germinate.
Depends if you have just soil or if there is grass or plant life. Soil, a landscape rake could loosen up the top enough to plant. You could mix in some good compost if you have it available and just break the surface of the soil open and mix in the compost with a rake. If there is anything growing that will all need to be removed first by either pulling or using cardboard to kill it off. You can check out my other video “From Grass to Garden” to see how to do that successfully. Good luck!
I assume these flowers reappear again next year ? When they wither, do you wait for a few weeks and cut them off a few cm above the soil ? Or do you just let them be ?
This was a mix of perennials and annuals so some will come up for sure while some of the annuals might drop their seeds and come up again. We are excited to see what grows this spring! We might also pick up another bag of this mix and reseed. we didn’t cut any of the flowers. We just let them do their thing :-) when the snow melts I will probably go out and just run over what is left and trim it a couple of inches above the ground.
Apply a fertilizer made especially for flowers after the border is in bloom. Keep things watered also. You really don’t need to do much A wildflower border should be low maintenance : )
We found it at Lowe’s and I think it was Pennington MidWest Wildflower Mix. I bought it on sale at the end of summer for like $7 a bag. We are anxious to see what comes up this year. We may put a light layer of more seeds if needed. We totally loved it!
