What many people don’t ever do is motion and with motion u can get the slot or will and Mikes to react and then u can break down which defense they’re in
I've been a hockey player my entire life and am now just getting into football specifically Madden. I have watched multiple videos from a bunch of people explaining how to spot the differences between positions but they have all lost me almost instantly. I understood everything you said, thank you for being so clear and concise I genuinely really appreciate it!
One piece of advice. If you want to learn defense, watch offensive pre snaps and plays. If you want to learn offense, watch defensive pre snaps and plays.
And people make excuses for Brock Purdy playing good is the talent around him 😂 when it comes to him now all of sudden its easy to be a professional QB in the NFL 😂
1 Safety over top could be cover 3 or cover 1 man, motion the slot receiver to really find out also, expect the person you're playing to user the linebacker who is more than likely to have a blitzing assignment. 2 Safeties over top could be cover 2 or cover 4, only way you'd find that out is when you say hut. Corner Routes beat cover 2, 3 & 4. I use it ALL the time. To beat it, run bunch, trips, trips TE, as long as its 3 receivers on one side or 2 receivers & a TE on one side. Send the TE or slot receiver on the corner route and whoever u didnt put on the corner route out of the 2, put THAT person on an out route. The Out route will make the flat react. Then, put the outside receiver on a streak which will take out the outside third, leaving the corner route by himself. If you do it enough they'd most likely make the flat play deeper to the corner route, then the out route will be open for a nice 3-5 yard gain. If he breaks the tackle then its more. If he doesn't adjust the flat, if the play works enough, he'd most likely start to user the linebacker to run to the corner route leaving his spot on the field wide open, once he starts to do that, keep the corner and out route on the field but make the outside receiver do a slant, you can catch the slant on mid-field because he'll begin to run to the corner route because it's been open too many times. That's for against cover 2,3 & 4. Shit dominates all 3 coverages.
I used a very similar concept which combined the Hank/Smash/Snag concepts as an OC. Out of trips the routes from R to L would be: Post-Curl, Spot, Quick Out. One will always be open even if it's the quick out for a checkdown/small gain. Coming from a former coach: I always tried to design pass plays where the route concepts on one side would beat 2 high coverage and the other side could beat 1 high coverage. Adjust from there. It's a bit more complicated and in-depth than that but that's more or less the basic concept. You then build on this and add in or tag motions, shifts, whatever accordingly. Of course this is different from a video game because you know more about your opponent via scouting and tape, etc. but it's a great foundation to build off of for football in general.
@@atk-3217 Has nothing to do with how I play, I would probably destroy you. The game itself is ass though, presentation wise and graphic wise it isn't close to CFB and gameplay wise it's still worse than a football game that came out 20 years ago on the fucking PS2. All of that has nothing to do with skill💀
I learned the hard way. My older brother never went easy on me in Madden, i lost over 100 games to him before ever getting a win. Slowly but surely I figured out defensive formations, seeing who stepped back at snap, and recognizing when someone would bite on a play action. Some would say he could of just taught me, but that was his way of teaching, and when i finally got that first win I knew it was from the hardwork. Now I can watch nfl games and give you play breakdowns live as the qb snaps. Shame i couldnt throw a football to save my life 😂
This was one of your best videos, because you broke it down and communicated this so SIMPLY. This full length video is actually great for new time Madden players. You did a great job with this video
I love your channel Kurt, love your clips. Just for the simple fact, there is always going to be someone that will learn something from you. You're a true inspiration, and most of all love you man! Keep it going! You're doing amazing!
This is why new school will always be better than old school I remember about 10-15 years ago if you understood coverages at any position you were ahead. Now it’s like a regular madden player knows.
I like to run 5-2 with DE/OLB hybrids on the outside that I can individually control to rush, cover zone or man or shadow a running QB. Works especially well in leagues with rules on rushing minimum players.
i’ve never been an expert when it comes to reading defenses and zones and shit like that but no lie this short helped contextualize those concepts very simply and quickly
This is exactly how i read defenses. Except a lot of times, when i want to pass, after I see the coverage, I audible two to three routes out of the formation I've chosen to have quick release options in case they bring pressure
First thing I look at coming to the line is if the safeties are two high or single high. For me, it gives a quick indication of where the ball might be able to go. Sending someone in motion can indicate if it's zone or man.
this is one of the reasons ronde barber was an extremely successful corner at rushing the passer...they teach them to watch the middle of the second level but not the outside very interesting...i always wondered why that worked so well lol
I play Madden and use my soccer formation with the defense and it works out perfectly. What you just explained is exactly what I think about when I’m playing Madden.
I have played football/madden my entire life (not a skill position) and this exactly how I read a defense and encourage skill players to as well. Process of elimination as soon you see the down lineman, then read the second level
This is what you see any given Saturday or Sunday on gamed days. I spend all my time listening to the QB, Defensive captains and watching how they lineup and try to guess pass or run
I wish i was more into football as a kid... I was a OLB, but they pretty much just lined me up to rush every play. I had the physical skills to get away with it , but I didnt know anything abot plays and formations. I was a straight A kid, just didnt put much effort into learning the game :/
I don't play a lick of madden, and probably never will, but I love how you breakdown the game, it makes it so much more enjoyable for me to watch as a fan.
I have to say man, as a die hard Falcons fan, I miss watching you play. I always had such high hopes for you with the dirty birds.. that QB1 spot is wide open right now, new coaching staff and all.🤔🤷♂️ id love to see you come rise up in the big A again.🤞 Regardless, keep up the awesome content my dude.
It’s funny because so many years ago you could hot route any defender pretty much do any route you could have your defensive end on the right cover the flat in the left if you knew what you were doing. This took away so many crossing routes .
I always look at, rush, safties, then leverage. I found out from watching your vids, I've been doing that for YEARS! I always thought I was just blessed by the Madded gods, but apparently I'm a natural field general.
I’m an old head I remember when games were just fun . lol so much to do presnap . 😩 I wish I were good like y’all kids today . I enjoy watching y’all play .

Watch the linebackers if they slide right or left or if the back up. Also if they split. If the slide left whatever route that’s cutting in is going to be open on the right side. And vice versa. If the scoot back all mid routes and inside post are dead look for the under neath. If the split in zone everything over the middle is easy throws just got to have time.
I can read the coverage pretty well in madden because of the camera angle. I can’t imagine how difficult it is to read when actually on the field. Plus in a real game players are moving around a lot and using disguises. Not to mention audibles only take 0.5 seconds in madden
I want this man to be my coach, I just run the same defensive play because my rolb if in a zone, will always have a hole in the opposite side of the oline for an easy sack
Cover 2 slots are true, cover 1 send the one, cover 3 ignore the deep, cover 4 slants galore. Take what they give you during the game, so you don’t have to risk it at the end.
Its not as hard as people think first step where is the safety that tells you cover 1 or cover 2. next step isnt really madden friendly but actual football: do they have a nickel corner or sam backer on the field. 3rd step run someone in motion and that tells you zone or man. The next step is acknowledging your down and distance and make your play call accordingly to that and the flow of the game.
I start with the safeties. Then gaze the middle and see if I noticed a gap where the LBs should’ve been. That’s also trouble cuz the user usually uses the middle of the field. So hopefully ya got something to pull him off
it sounds so easy when he explains it but u gotta factor in u gotta do all that in less then 3-4 seconds damn near while dropping back and keeping away from the 4 dls guaranteed to come at u
As someone who grew up watching soccer, reading football plays is like reading music, I feel like you had to grow up watching it since you were little to understand things like when and how to use such defense… I can read any soccer game, football is a lot harder to understand
Doesn’t matter , been playing madden since 06. This would definitely be beneficial in the older games but with the newer ones it’s just about which animations the game is giving you at a given time
