- A BBC North East and Cumbria project. 100 people. 100 years. What made 2012 an important year?
Each person featured in this film was born in a different year between 1912 and 2011. They were all asked one simple question: "why was 2012 important to you?" See 100 years of human life compressed into 7 minutes.
The film features well-known faces, including gold-medal winning Olympians Kat Copland and BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year, 2012, Josef Craig as well as singers Joe McElderry, Graeme Danby and Steeleye Span's Maddy Prior, alongside less well-known people from the North East and Cumbria.
The music was performed by the English Philharmonic Orchestra, produced by Andy Bell, and composed by Benjamin Till.
The film was produced by Nell Gordon.
I was number 30. I still watch this short film today.
Just beautiful. An extraordinary mix of the mundane and the intensely moving. The man who's struggling without his wife broke my heart. Xxxx
I lost My Father this year and I found this very comforting, I am passing it on instead of Christmas card. The music is lovely.
yet another thought provoking beautiful piece of work by ben till. i defy you not to cry and smile
Ah Ben, so touching, so moving, made me cry and yet there is so much joy in it too. In all you do, you know how to touch a person's soul. Sent it to all my friends. Thank you, Ben, will be looking out for anything else you create.
Outstanding. Thank you. I am sending it to everyone I know. The world doesn't always seem a very pleasant place, this video manages to reset the balance.
Well done Benjamin. A roller coaster of emotions crammed into 8 minutes.
Watching it reminds you how incredibly fleeting life is, even if you reach 100. A beautiful and poignant film.
So incredibly beautiful. Congratulations you talented man! Thank you! xxx
Well done indeed, Benjamin, and you don't shirk the painful stuff. At this rate you will become a National Treasure! Great work, really...
My friend Roy Chapman shared this me and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I miss England :(
Hi Benjamin,
Wow! What an absolutely beautiful celebration of life and human love, compassion, fortitude and humour. Love it! And also I think your London Requiem is fantastic too. ur a very cleva fellah!
This is very touching and the overall concept/styling/composition is stunning. Love!
Wonderful and life affirming Ben. I adore your work x
I loved this. You are truly amazing, Benj.
Another amazing video. You never disappoint. What a beautiful way to sum up a year!!
Beautifully shot, very touching and real.
Another great and moving short film from Mr Till. As ever loved it. Thank you!
I hope you will caption this so that I may share it with my friends who have hearing difficulties or auditory processing difficulties. Adding captions will give many more people access to your lovely project.
Beautifully shot indeed . Well done. I liked the diversity!
Never quite understand why someone wishes to put someone down when you try and do something positive and not try and offer to help or provide a solution as Milly does. Sure we live in multicultural society. Next time I can point you point in different directions. Judy has an interesting point regarding adding captions as a number of different themes already emerging from the messages and there for the taking. Continue success Ben..
I was inspired by your wedding and I am truly inspired by this, thank you for the life you bring. I am going to run in a marathon in iceland! all 250 pounds of me!!! So excited!
Hey there, Billy. What a lovely message. A marathon in Iceland sounds extraordinary. I wish you all the best - and predict there won't be 250 pounds of you by the time you finish!!
Uplifting! Good luck with this.
What can you do in 2013 Ben? Quite a visionary, if I may say so.
Hey there Gurpal. You raise a very interesting question about multicultural communities. Two responses. Firstly, the make up of the BBC Cumbria/ North east region is largely white, as reflected in the film, and secondly, the BBC and I can only work with those who put themselves forward to take part in projects like this.
I heard the sad news today that Mary Ross, our 95 year old in this film, has died. She was wonderful and sparky and I'm sure she'll be very badly missed by all her friends and family members. RIP, Mary. You saved our bacon!
...I struggle to engage (particularly Asian) members of non-white communities for these projects, even in London. There seems to be a lack of interest or possibly even a mistrust. If you know any way in which these problems could be addressed, I'd love to hear your thoughts. It would be great to be able to engage more members of non-white communities, but I'm afraid you're making things a little bit over simplistic if you think the answer is as simple as to just "include more."
Great video good luck however other communities other than Caucasian massively underrepresented, maybe because I am from South East and things are different in South East England than in North West England. Maybe try for a wider audience and more diversification in 2013.
Ummmmm.....
fab vid and love what you have done with it my daughter was number 11 and yep she made me proud and brung a tear to my eye seeing her in the short film
well done everyone who took part
Hi Benjamin. Great film, really enjoyed it. Regarding the question of how to increase engagement with non-white communities - perhaps if you were to do any similar projects in the future, you could approach some local organisations and involve key people in the project from the start, they will have access to groups and communities that may not be so welcoming to you.
Another stroke of genius, Ben! I'm going to pass this on as a Christmas and New Year message to my friends - Thanks and best wishes. We look forward to your next inspirational offering.
Beautiful melody. Very moving stories. And so true that you blink and another year goes by. Lovely
I watch this every New Year’s Eve and cry at the same bit that I did watching it the first time at your parents
A wonderful idea celebrating all that the human spirit is capable of. Extremely moving.
Captures all our frailties and our joys. Beautiful little film.
Wonderful, Ben. Thank you.
A stunning piece of art! Congratulations Ben!
Excellent!
Very touching and inspiring. What a lovely score.
