Beautiful work! I didn't know what to expect after the post wasn't flush with the railing. Turned out excellent!
Looks good but it would’ve been nice to know HOW you did it.
Thanks! And yes this was my first video. I am going to be showing how I did it going forward. Thanks for watching
@@DIYHomeEdition turn the phone sideways (landscape) next time.
You are right: it looks great. Wish you had shown how you striped the hand rail from the old paint to applying the new stain and sealing it. Great info!
Yes, it did, turned out well. Nice update to the interior.
Looks great...classy! Well done! 👌
Thank you! More videos coming soon!
Wow, for not knowing what you were doing I'm blown away. Looks 1000% better and totally professional! Super impressed. Well done!!
Thank you! 😊
I was looking for a video like this about 2 years ago! I think it looks great! Thanks
Glad you like it!
Looks great!
Looks beautiful!! Nicely done.
Thank you very much!
Awesome demo!
Nice job man!!! Got a very similar existing rail system. Was just looking at the same from lowes. I’m gonna paint my post white, but rails will match my floors.
Complete game changer in the house vibes! Your gonna love it! Best of luck and thanks for watching the video!
Hole saw bit is what that device was. Great job.
Thank you!
thanks for the share :D, nice to have a lil angel helper
Nice, I am about to do mine... lol
You did a great job and it looks amazing! Thanks for yhe helpful video.
Glad it was helpful!
Solid work my friend!!! 👍🏽 I’m not handy, but working on a similar project. Fingers crossed ☺️
Thank you! You got this!! 🦾🦾
Excellent. I wish you showed the staining process but I’m using this video to refinish my stairs. Thank you. Question. Do you match the railing to the floors? I have gray floors and gray hardwood stair treads. Seems like a lot of gray on the stairs. Thoughts?
I wish I did also! This was my first DIY video so I did a lot of things wrong as far as documenting how I did it!
I matched my railing to my floors (as closely as possible). I used the same stain for my fireplace mantle. It’s up to you on what you think would look good. I think a brown stain would pair well with grey floors also, so totally up to you! Maybe look at Pinterest for ideas!
If I could give you advice on staining. Your going to need to sand the railing a lot to allow the wood to fully accept the stain. Good luck! Thanks for watching 😊
looks good! did you use glue to mount the iron balusters to the rails, if so what kind of glue and how has it been holding up since your installation? thanks
I used liquid nails. It’s been perfect since installing!
What length balusters did you use? My current balusters only measure 27” without including what is hidden inside the railing and base.
When you buy the balusters from the store they will be ~44” in length. You need to cut the baluster based on your staircase. Measure from the bottom of your handrail to the bottom board and add 1.5”.
It sounds like your balusters are 27” so you would want to cut them at 28.5” in length to account for the part that goes in both holes
My balusters were longer ~31.5” in length
The wooden circle where the rail meets the wall, did you think about changing that at all? Is there a more updated look than leaving it?
I did! But I figured it was more trouble than it was worth trying to remove the entire railing. I didn’t want to mess up the angle
Nice
Did you consider notching your newel post so that it followed your toe plates?
No I didn’t, but that could have been another way to do it!
Outstanding! You did an amazing job!
Thank you!!! :)
That is murphy 's law......anything that could go wrong would go wrong......great that your patience and problem solving skill got you good result
Thank you! Appreciate the kind words 😁
How do you know what angle the shoes are cut at to match the pitch of the stairway railing? Or is it just a standard angle?
It’s standard. I just looked up the product I used from Home Depot online and in the description it says “Most importantly, the Slip-N-Grip shoe will self-adjust to the angle of most residential stair handrails, providing a tight fit underneath the handrail.”

@@DIYHomeEdition thanks! We are
about to start a similar project!
@@westrokker Awesome. It makes such a big difference! Good luck 🍀
Good work my bro
Thanks dude!
Awesome 👏 job ! Such a huge difference, I very the stain color, mind Sharing which stain you used ? Thanks
I used Minwax Honey 272 and thank you!!

@@DIYHomeEdition awesome 👏 thank you 🙏
Awesome final result. Doesn't look like it's your first time finishing the rails. What did you use to pry off the base of the newel post?
Thank you! I used a wrecking bar to pry the trim away from the base of the newel post. I did it slowly to make sure I didn’t damage anything.
@@DIYHomeEdition thanks.
Would have been nice to use pl premium of liquid nails to secure inner block to outer block no screws needed.
Good point! Thanks for watching!
I like how you use the word “system” so loosely 😀
😂
Hello I'm curious as to how you took the old railing off because mine is attached the same way with no screws
I used a wrecking bar to pry the railing away from the newel post. It was held in with 3 nails, so I just took my time to pry it away slowly. After the newel post was removed I left the railing in place. To make sure the railing was supported I left about half of the spindles installed until I got the new newel post installed. Then I removed all of the old spindles before I installed the new iron balusters. Let me know if this didn’t answer your question.
@@DIYHomeEdition ok thank you. I'll be back if I have anymore questions. Im about to try and remove. Thanks alot
@@portiamitchell8123 good luck!! 🍀
Outstanding job. I’ve been wanting to do mine but I’ve never done a railing project and I’m afraid of screwing it up.
Thank you! I honestly was afraid to start mine as well but once I started the demo I was fully invested. Just work slowly and you should be good! It’s always hard to start a project.
@@DIYHomeEdition awesome vid! Love how you got the kids involved too. Where did you get rods from? You had to cut them down?
@@degen_dad7682 Thank you! 😁
I bought the balusters at Home Depot. They come at a length of 44” but you need to cut them to length based on the distance between the bottom of your handrail to the top of the baseboard, then add 1.5” to account for the margin that will go into each hole. Here is a link to the ones I used, which seem to be in stock:

Where did you get your balusters. I am looking for square iron and having a hard time.

Nice job. Did you go back and stain the white base wood under the ballast ?
No I left the baseboard white!
Looks great. For the bottom of the newel post…where you decided to cut into the woodwork, would have been better to cut the bottom of the newel post to slide over the current structure.
Hey David. Thank you. In my situation cutting into the woodwork worked out perfectly because the distance I needed to make up was the same thickness of the wood piece over the main structure. I think it really depends on your situation. I can see both options working. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Is the glue strong enough to hold a fall on the guardrails?
The guardrail (aka balusters) were cut to length that both ends were inside the holes. The glue (aka liquid nails) are to to help keep them in place and prevent them from rotating. The glue alone is not the main thing that would help break and fall, but the actual balusters because both ends are inserted into the holes. I did a lot of research before and this is the method used to install balusters.

Thanks man! This really helped me do my stairs! If you don’t mind me asking… are you from right outside Philly? You have a very specific accent I know well.
You’re welcome! This was my first video ever so it’s not the best but I’m glad it helped you remodel your stair railing! I’m from VA, but recently relocated to CO. Never been to Philly! 🤷🏻♂️
Where did you get the iron rods and posts?
I purchased the posts and iron rods from lowes!
Maybe you mentioned in the video but i missed. How much did it cost?
It was under $1000. I think closer to around $800 total
Nice Job, looks great! Want to do mine?
Haha thanks! If I can do it so can you!
What color of stain is this? Hard to tell in the video.
I used Minwax Honey 272

Just a bit of feedback if you're interested. You didn't actually show yourself doing anything??? THe value of these videos is watching the process, both the success and the screw ups. I think you would have a much better following if you started filming yourself doing the actual tasks instead of just talking about them. Just my 2 cents...good luck!
Thanks for the feedback and I completely agree! I just purchased a tripod that will allow me to capture me actually doing the work. I have also realized since taking this video that I needed to film this horizontally not vertically, which should allow the video footage to fill the entire screen. Lots of improvements need to be made! Baby steps :)
@@DIYHomeEdition Best of Luck!! Remember that the screw ups are extremely valuable to someone learning...and comical to those of us that have already made the screw up!!!
@@jlansink1 thank you for offering honest and kind feedback. He will be better because of you. I am better because if you 💕
wait... you didn't show the actual removal of the posts. That's what I wanted to see.
Yes this was my first ever DIY video so I didn’t do a lot of things that probably would have made it better. But to remove the spindles/balusters I simply just cut them in half. Then twisted them in a circle which helped pull out any Brad nails that were holding the spindle/baluster in place. I would do some additional research to make sure you remove your spindles/balusters correctly that are unique to your staircase. Best of luck and thanks for watching!
If you had fun doing it, more power to you. However after watching your video, I'd just hire a contractor and hang out with the family.
Yes I had a blast working on it and got the family involved!
Wrong way to record video for UA-cam. You must hold your phone vertical 😑
Yeah I realized after I should have held my phone horizontally not vertical. No worries 😉
@@DIYHomeEdition 😄😄
Are you sure you didn’t pay someone to do it???
😂
This guy has to be from Pittsburgh or close by. Heavy accent.
East coast but not Pittsburgh!
When people make these videos we want to see how you did all of it. Saying you pried the posts away but not showing isn't helpful. Are they screwed, nailed, glued...how did you do it without destroying everything else. Just showing the after product isn't helpful. FYI
Not that great looking.
the before picture was nicer wtf
😂 that is a mess plus it don't match. Nice try tho. Don't do nothing. 1st get your measurements before u buy.
Good thing it’s not YOUR house where YOU pay rent/mortgage. Always have to be a negative Nancy to comment. Just move on🤦🏾♀️
