The reason why the three lanes Exit to the left at Exit 13 is because it was planned to continue as the NJ-75 freeway through downtown Newark and continue east towards the NJ turnpike and therefore that interchange was designed in anticipation that the majority of the traffic would be continuing on NJ-75 which was then canceled due to the Freeway Revolts...
Wow, Freeway Jim went right through my town, near the 80/287/280 interchange of heck! I feel like a UA-cam celebrity has visited. BTW Jim, that weird 3/2 lane split that 280 goes through in Newark is because that section of 280 is actually a very old NJ state road (NJ 58) that was grandfathered into the Interstate system. Thanks as always for the awesome vid!
Personal insight. For Newark, NJ I-78 is the more modern one due to it being Express local lanes from Exit 48 Springfield to Exit 58 I-95 US-1 bridges there date back to 1976 except for Exits 56-57 viaduct 1989 due to a fire. NJIT Is Exit 56 on I-78 Rutgers Newark & Prudential Center Exit 57.
Thanks, I don't like to give away my future video routes in advance but as posted at the end of this video, the next one will be the Pulaski Skyway and there are many more videos coming after that from around the northeast.
The 3 left lanes @ 4:15 were built to feed a cross town freeway (NJ-75) south through Newark that was to connect with I-78 at the Clinton Ave (W Peddie St / Elizabeth Ave) interchange. That freeway, of course, was never built.
Jman2013 good point and for Clinton Ave I-78 exit 56 the proposed NJ-75 crosstown fwy southern terminus the ramps end up splitting into Express and Local lanes for I-78 east and west with I-78 express and local lanes having direct access into NJ-75 crosstown fwy. To me I-78 seems to be the less congested route to Newark due to it being Express-Local lanes from exit 48 Springfield to Exit 58 I-95 US-1 Newark
By far the most interesting freeway per mile in NJ. Two big hills for that rollercoaster feel (do it westbound on a light traffic day in the left lane!), ultra urban and substandard, plus a rusty old drawbridge for good measure.
Originally, the First St. exit was a hi speed ramp with a blind turn into a stop light T-Intersection. Many a serious accident there when vehicles plowed in to the brick walled building on the other side. After some thought, they made it a though intersection.
Flashback for me FWJ. Makes me remember all the times I drove this. My wife worked in Jersey for 7 years and I drovethis so many time Usually only to Exit 5 because we were in Caldwell. Many othe times to go to Camelback or Syracuse. Up at my other home in Boston after travel to DC (where my daughter lives) ans Syracuse for the fabulous Syracuse Nationals (7,500 classic cars t the NYS Fairgrounds). Then over to Boston to do stuff at the other house. Cal next week for me. Been a while.
Nice vid- LOVE how there are more than one 280s around the US! I am more familiar with the one in Toledo as I have spent many a time on that road! Awesome vids as always and good music too!
Great video. I wonder if it`s allowed to pas other cars both on the right side and the left side in the USA ? Here in Denmark it`s not legal po pass other cars on the right side so if you have a car going slow in the middle lane on a 3 lane highway and you are in the right lane you have to shift all the way to the outer lane to pass him !!
Great video, I thought you were going to get on the (NJT-I-95), it would have been going back home for me, NYC. The saying is, You can take the man out of NYC, but you can't take NYC out of the man! Seriously though, I very much enjoy your videos because they are very entertaining!!!
Was that Mr Magoo that passed you again at the slowdown at the Garden State Parkway? Jim, you did an enormous amount of taping on June 15th!! The last 6 videos were from that day, through Baltimore, Delaware, Philly, Poconos, and right up to NYC!
Awesome videos! So what do you do? Travel to all of USA's biggest cities and video tape your driving with your camera attached to your dashboard, if so Awesome Job! Sounds like fun.,
Great video Another Steely Dan song thats good is Hey Nineteen Few years back I was driving over Monteagle TN when it came on the radio song fits perfectly there. On the later part of this video isnt the freeway scene from Being John Malkovich?:)
Weren't too far off when you went by the NJ 21 exit. Though it would be funny mentioning that 2 videos after mentioning their Eastern Conference Semis rival...
Nice one Jim! Getting a bit testy in Joisey, are we? REALLY looking forward to what you're doing for NYC. It was your earlier set of NYC that made me a fan!
Thanks! Just trying to fit in NJ, lol. I only have three that are pure NYC buy a couple others in NJ that will give you the NYC feel. Traffic/Construction really put the brakes on the plans I had for this trip in NYC.
3:22 Why is there traffic getting off onto the Garden State Parkway? 4:17 That makes no sense! THREE lanes should continue along I-280! 4:43 Oh, no. A drawbridge? How often does this open? On the other hand, great video! I can't wait to see what the Skyway looks like. :)
for point 1, gsp is north-south, so some people want to go to places like asbury park and edison. 2, cancelled freeway. 3, 280 was made before standards, and wasn't replaced, so same with the drawbridge.
Thanks, interesting thought about the song although I've never heard of Steely Dan being a VH influence, Clapton & Blackmore are the names I've read with regards to Eddie's playing.
Good Video but the eastern terminus of I 280 is in KEARNY NEW JERSEY a town with a rich history, Somehow you missed that, when you took the exit for route 508 east (Newark and Jersey City Turnpike) You were in KEARNY Anyone who watched the Sopranos has heard of the place. I'm glad you didn't mention the Devils, all those cups and can't even sell out during the playoffs.
#1 How the hell would I know? it could be a typical afternoon rush hour traffic pattern. #2 Agreed! #3 I don't know. Thanks, I think you'll enjoy the skyway.
Would it be SO HARD for new jersey to put a I 95 symbol with the NJTP logo. Every f'n map in the world has the turnpike labeled as I 95. I got lost as hell trying to find I 95 ! Very confusing for out of towners.
You aren't supposed to pass on the right in the USA but most American drivers have no concept of lane discipline so it's a rule that is hardly ever enforced.
10 Years Later, This Video Lives On

That's also evident on I-78 exit 56 where NJ-75 gets ramps to I-78 Express and Local lanes.
The sudden terminus at 5:36 was supposed to connect with NJ-17, which terminates at a cloverleaf in East Rutherford
Great ride, especially the long descent from the mountain! Also I noticed from the signs in your vid that New Jersey has County Roads like in Florida.

Theres an abandoned bridge over NJ Transit shortly after that was supposed to connect with I-280 with the proposed NJ-75
Great film, great music as always.. It fit well.

Thanks, it was a FUN song to work with, that's for sure...."The Mustafa" I like that!
Thanks for the recommend, I appreciate it!!
The Flyers mention was for a friend, I'm a Boston/New England fan and I'm not showing any NY teams any love :)

Thanks for another great ride!
I-95 serves Elizabeth from Exit 13 or Exit13a and if you are on I-80 East you must go on Exit 68 and you enter I-95 south
Awesome! Can't wait for NYC.
4:18 reminds me of the I-290 @ I-355 interchange in IL (I-290 EB is like the I-280 in this instance, or at least was the last time I remember it)
loooove your videos Jim! good job!!!
Great vid and track! Looking forward to the next!
Great video, I thought you were going to get on the (NJT-I-95), it would have been going back home for me, NYC. The saying is, You can take the man out of NYC, but you can't take NYC out of the man! Seriously though, I very much enjoy your videos because they are very entertaining!!!
Thank you, my best NJTPK video is 14-12, followed by my best NYC Video on 14-13.
Was that Mr Magoo that passed you again at the slowdown at the Garden State Parkway?
Jim, you did an enormous amount of taping on June 15th!! The last 6 videos were from that day, through Baltimore, Delaware, Philly, Poconos, and right up to NYC!
I do like that song, have not shot the right footage for it yet, but maybe someday.
Awesome videos! So what do you do? Travel to all of USA's biggest cities and video tape your driving with your camera attached to your dashboard, if so Awesome Job! Sounds like fun.,
I know I must sound like a broken record...great work as always!
Great video Another Steely Dan song thats good is Hey Nineteen Few years back I was driving over Monteagle TN when it came on the radio song fits perfectly there. On the later part of this video isnt the freeway scene from Being John Malkovich?:)
Once again, Jim with a another great video!
Weren't too far off when you went by the NJ 21 exit. Though it would be funny mentioning that 2 videos after mentioning their Eastern Conference Semis rival...
Thanks, and no doubt about people like that on the road, maddening!
Nice stuff Jim.
Nice one Jim! Getting a bit testy in Joisey, are we? REALLY looking forward to what you're doing for NYC. It was your earlier set of NYC that made me a fan!
I've been doing this for 5 years and have built up an audience, that and make something quality that other people find entertaining
Thank you!
For a future video, how about playing "Between The Wheels" by Rush?
Thanks
Great video!!
Not to mention the I-280 in Toledo, OH, that I also have a video of.
Thanks! Just trying to fit in NJ, lol. I only have three that are pure NYC buy a couple others in NJ that will give you the NYC feel. Traffic/Construction really put the brakes on the plans I had for this trip in NYC.

There are FOUR more videos from the 15th in the NJ-NYC area still to come.
This was part of a vacation/road trip, I really don't travel much to be honest, I'm on the road less than 10 days a year in most cases.
Thanks for the info on I-280 and you are too kind, lol.
What.... no reference about the New Jersey Devils when passing through Newark?
Thanks, I doubt I would use Hey Nineteen, not crazy about the tempo....not familiar with that movie you mentioned.
Thanks man!
It is a control option within my video software.
I-280 via Newark Turnpike to Pulaski Skyway to Holland Tunnel.
or via I-95/NJ 495 Lincoln Tunnel
How many miles do you put on your vehicle in one year? :D
You'll get a big glimpse in the next video :)
#1 How the hell would I know? it could be a typical afternoon rush hour traffic pattern.
#2 Agreed!
#3 I don't know.
Thanks, I think you'll enjoy the skyway.
Cool!
Same problem in France ! We dont have the right to overpass by the right side. If we do it : a big fine !
I am on that road all the time. They are re paving it and it looks horrible.
How do you speed up the vid
About 20-25K a year.
Would it be SO HARD for new jersey to put a I 95 symbol with the NJTP logo. Every f'n map in the world has the turnpike labeled as I 95. I got lost as hell trying to find I 95 ! Very confusing for out of towners.
I agree, that's a good idea.
You can get a small glimpse of the Manhattan skyline at 4:50
MAXWELL!! We're down the hill.
I lived in NJ when i Was 4
Roughly at 4:51, you'll see Newark Broad Street Station on the right.
Thanks for watching!
You aren't supposed to pass on the right in the USA but most American drivers have no concept of lane discipline so it's a rule that is hardly ever enforced.
It's a great record, lol, thanks.
Had I gone by their arena....maybe :)
N J Transit train on left @ 3:45.
I-80 will lead to the Bronx
I-280 actually leads to Manhattan /downtown New York.
I-280 is pure confusion, I don't even know why it really exists.
I thought it was Wa Wa Wa went the little piggy all the way home? 🤔
how did you get lots of viewers? I want lots of viewers too
I live very near 280
I live in harrison
