SOLO BACKPACKING MOUNT LANGLEY | Cottonwood Lakes | Old Army Pass | 4K

- On this adventure I went to Cottonwood Lakes and spent two nights in search of solitude in the wild, bag Mt Langley and catch my first Golden trout. My stay in Lake No. 3 for two nights was pretty much the way I expected it except for the windy situation which I think hampered my chance to score for a Golden trout. It was hazy the first day and it was too obvious as I started climbing thru Old Army Pass towards Mt Langley on the second day. Overall, it was a great experience for a solo backpacking adventure in the Eastern Sierras. Definitely I will be coming back this way someday and fulfill my dream of one Golden trout.

Beautiful video!
Thank you. ✌️
Congratulations sweet video
Thank you.
Awesome Video thank you
Thanks for watching! 👍
Ang galing kabayan.!! Tagay talaga.
Salamat for taking us along .keep me awake here at work 2300 to 0730.
Good job Robert
Thank you. You know what, that should be so cool to climb during snow season. If coming from New Army Pass, it won’t be that hard.
@@20robertang I will be interested doing it. I have the gear and training; but will not go solo though
Shuping Yin
Let’s see when snow starts to cover the area. If the road will become icy then they might close the Horseshoe Meadow Road.
Keep safe always.wish to tag along sometime .
Nice video…thanks for bringing us along…
If I fail to get overnight passes for Whitney…I’ll come to Langley…also looking for solitude and fishing…
Thanks!
Yeah, that’s a great destination as well that’s within the area. I really wanna go back that way soon when I get the chance and redeem myself and catch my first golden.. 👍
Going to do this next Saturday, will drop some weight/setup camp at either Lake #3 or #4 and summit and then come back to rest/sleep. Thanks for the video it was very informative.
Right on!
Thanks for watching and good luck on your trip!👍
Awesome vedio. Thank you. I liked and subbed.
Thank you. It’s getting warmer now so I guess I’m done for the year unless a storm will hit again. Although a lot of my friends are asking same question, as I always say.. never say Never.
Galing! I am looking forward to doing this trail with @Yeswecanoutdoors this weekend. Wish us luck!
Right on!
Good luck and enjoy the hike. You guys going through Old Army Pass or New Army?
@Yeswecanoutdoors which route are we taking?
@@handydaddy4232
Yeah.
Dude that is one jumbo egg! Haha
dry potato and jam
It’s organic, lol.
Try fly fishing next time. You will more likely catch something! Nice adventure and video!
Thanks, Daniel.
Yeah, I’m looking at a backpacking size fly rod. Mine is too big and heavy for this kind of trip. 👍
Like the relaxing in the tent ⛺😎
Yummy Pandesal.
That was my 2nd 14 er. I had totally researched the trail, did it as a day hike. Had dinner in lone pine. 20 plus round trip. I just pushed all the way back to the car.
Nice. Did you go through New Army or Old Army pass?
Only a few seconds to hike all the way back. That’s pretty good. Ha ha. Congrats on climbing Langley.
waterfallmadman
Thanks, Leon. Such an awesome place to stay overnight.
Spam..yea!! That what I'm talking about.
That is so great that you included driving direction in the video. Thanks Robert.
Ramon Rodriguez
I’m not in AllTrails. But the drive is easy to follow, drive 395 then make a left on Whitney Portal Road just like going to Mt Whitney trailhead. For about a couple of miles turn left to Horseshoe Meadow Road and drive the paved road for another 20 miles. When you reach the Horseshoe Meadow area, turn right when you see the sign for Cottonwood Lakes trailhead, a few minutes away. It has walk-in campground and overflow parking too so no worries.
@@20robertang awesome .
16:22 nice time travel ahaha
Lol. Thanks for watching.
Cottonwood Lakes looks beautiful even though there was smoke in the air. Solitude is hard to find but it looks like you found it. Another awesome adventure and thanks for taking us along Robert.
Thank you, Tony. I’m glad I pushed myself to do it. At least I’ve found what I was looking for. Tc
Thanks, Robert. Great video and adventure!
susan rogers
Thanks, Susan.
Nice job Robert! Congrats. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Louie Cobarrubio
Thanks, Louie. You know I still remember one time you told me about this place. Lakes below Mt Langley.
Great video thanks for sharing....let me know when you go again I'll join you!
Thanks!
I really wanted to go back there and catch my first Golden trout.. maybe next year.
Great video Robert, congrats on your summit!🙌

Thank you, Jeanette.
Congratulations ! Good times ! Cheers !

I had a blast, thanks.
Very cool hike, totally informative. Been there a few years ago. Looking forward here soon
I just hiked out to Cottonwood Lakes. Wish I had more time to go up Mt Langley, and continue on this great trail
Alice Ford
Such a beautiful place, I need to back there and catch some golden. The climb to Langley from the lakes thru Old Army Pass was pleasant. Thanks for checking out this video.
Congrats on bagging Langley bud! Those golden trout can sure be elusive. The barbless hooks sure make it a little more difficult too!
Huck Outdoors
Thanks. Yeah, I need to step up on my fishing gear set up I guess. My Phanter Martin and horsetail didn’t work.
@@20robertang I should sit down with you and get you a small ultralight back country trout lure kit.
Huck Outdoors
Thanks, that’ll be great.
i went up there in june and when we where headed back down there was a sound almost like a jet then the trees started to shake and it was 5.8 earthquake in lone pine there was very powerful shaking and the drive down was terrible cause of boulders on the road so it was a very interesting experience!
That was crazy, but experiencing that is also a chance of a lifetime. I’m glad you got out safe.
@@20robertang Thanks 🙏
Really enjoyed this one Robert, you are an excellent filmmaker and storyteller and your energy on the trail is off the hook! I laughed when I heard that jewharp, I used to carry one on my hikes too. I hiked that area about 5 years ago, did cottonwood pass to Soldier lake then crossed new army pass and down to the five lakes. I was only 2 miles from Langley at the top of new army pass but just didn't have enough energy to tackle it. I hope to get back up there this fall and bag Langley before the snow comes, I want to try it as a day hike and do the old army pass like you did. Take care my friend.
Hilltop Hiker
Thanks, Jim. I remember passing by that junction to Soldier Lake from the PCT when we did the hike from Cottonwood Pass.. I wanna do that loop as well. I think this 5 lakes area to Langley is a lot better than Whitney Trail. Your right, that 2 miles is still hard work to summit, it looks deceiving but doable. And going up from Old Army is the way to do it, more challenging. Happy trails my friend.
Love this video man! By the way we met at Lytle Creek and we talked about your channel!
I was wondering what ultralight tripod you use for your DSLR? Thank you!
Hi there, Alan. I remember you and Eric and Nathan as well. I hope you guys are doing okay. I used two different tripods when I go backpacking or hiking. One is the Sirui 3T-35R red color, a table top tripod. On this trip, I brought my newer tripod which is the AOKA KB 20. This one is carbon fiber but only 28” long max. Very light. I think from now on I’ll be using AOKA to lighten up my load.
Awesome trip Robert what a beautiful area I love it up there
James McIntyre
Thanks, James.
Great video. The Eastern Sierra's always look amazing.
TheMbn1972
Thanks, Martin. Let go get a group and bag it.. I know Mike wants to go that way.
I'm game!
Are you on Alltrails?
How did you manage to keep your eggs from spoiling? You seem to pack light and have everything you need. Thanks for the informative video.
If I bring eggs when backpacking, I make sure not to expose them in the sun and place them inside a container. Most of the time I bring one liter frozen Gatorade as a refrigeration system. Of all the times I brought eggs, I never had an experience of having spoiled so far.
My full pack usually average around 20’s for an overnight, bear canister not included. It goes heavy if I need to bring lots of water. I have 1.7 lbs pack (HMG Southwest 2400), EE Revelation quilt (25 oz) and REI Flash Air 1 (20 oz) - my three basics.
Thanks for checking out the video, let me know if you have more questions..✌️
When are you hiking Big Iron Mountain?
Will be nice to summit it in snow
I'd rather hike this over Whitney... I hope to knock this one out next year when my ankle's all recovered. Nice work as always dude! You're a hikin' machine.
Urban Outdoorsman
Thanks, Andrew. You’ll love this place.. haven for fishermen dreaming of golden trout. Hopefully you’ll get better with your ankle and get out there.
@@20robertang Yeah that's the goal.,. I'd like to spend 3-4 days out there fishin' and summit langley. Beast of a hike though. Going to do some training hikes this fall, winter and spring before I try that one though.
Urban Outdoorsman
I would rate this one as 8 compared to 10 for Whitney. Still hard due elevation but not as difficult as Whitney. I’ll be back that way for sure to score that golden, lol.
@@20robertang Goldens bite much better at first light, and at dark. Especially when presented with things they don't normally see in the water. During mid-day, the fish that will go after a spoon or jig are a little farther off shore, or in deeper water. Super spooky fish.
Congratulations for bagging another summit... one more in the bag. Great video... I really enjoyed watching. You are a trail beast. RedWhite&Blue baby... love the little flag. Not bad if the only thing you didn't accomplish is catching a brown. Still a bitchen place to just enjoy the views. Great, Great, Great trip and video. Thank you for sharing. Take care Robert.
RedWhite&Blue 78
That’s my next challenge, to score my first Golden trout anywhere I could catch it.
You know that little flag is very sentimental to me because that’s the one that was handed to me when I took my oath last December. Thanks, Jason.
@@20robertang... Awesome... I love that you wanted to be an American, and did it right way. My hat is off to you friend, fellow American. 🇺🇸
What a great video! Headed out that way for 2 nights also in a few days, so it was great to see your journey (and see what the smoke was really like). Loved the entire bag of cookies as well. :)
Thank you.
You’ll enjoy this place. I wish I could stay longer and camp at 4&5 too. Well, have a great hike.. happy trails!
What a great adventure Robert! Loved the mouth-harp segment and the camraportation action.
Adam Burrows
That piece of instrument is called “Kubing” and it’s made of bamboo which I had since 1989.
amazing trip!! really cool you scored a hat up on the mtn... windy on the summit but looks real nice down at the lake. crazy how all that smoke is blowing behind you around 13 min... too bad no fish but overall/ awesome time and love the camera transporter haha
Thank you, Thorn. This place is a lot better than the Whitney area in terms of backpacking and fishing with beautiful lakes. I just wanted to do different tricks in every video I can come up. I need to come back there and catch that elusive golden.. soon.
You can pull a still image from your video as well if you want a shot without your head chopped off :). good video man! I sub'ed
Thanks!
That’s a good idea, most times I’m the designated photographer of the group.. they usually end up with great photos but me, lol.
@@20robertang haha yeah I know how that is ... almost no pics of me because I'm behind the camera
Awesome! I've been trying to score a permit for Cottonwood Lakes but it's never available :( Did you have to try a bunch of times before you were able to get one?
aldenv2
Thanks. You have to open the website on Monday’s around 8:00 am. It will show you the open dates. I did it this trip on weekdays and it was so easy to score a permit. Even if you wanted on weekends, there are still some open spots. I tried getting permit only once.
Great video! Could you smell the smoke while you were hiking? I have plans to go up to cottonwood lakes/mt Langley on Labor Day weekend, but I’m debating whether or not to cancel due to the fires and air quality.
nathanjay87
Thanks.
The smoke is visible from there but not present in the area. I never smell it while I was there for two nights. Although ash fell to my tent on the first night, but that’s it. I never had problem with my breathing because of smoke, it’s just that I didn’t enjoy the view more due to haze.
Thanks! Hopefully the winds will be in our favor this weekend.
Awesome video!! Congratulations on the summit.
I’m heading up to the Sierra this weekend and am seriously considering a day hike there for some goldens. I’ve caught them at several different areas but haven’t made the trip to Cottonwood yet. How long did it take hike up to lake 3?
I couldn’t tell what you were throwing but I would suggest you get some mini jigs.
There are plenty of places to find gold. You’re willing to put the effort, check out the dfw backcountry fishing guide.
Subbed... keep exploring!
Cottonwood Lakes #1 and back is a great day hike as well. I just did that one the week before last.
Thanks.
My hiking time from trailhead to Lake No. 3 was almost 4 hours which took me longer since I was filming. I was using a Panther Martin #2 and Horsetail. I should have used a little jigs I guess.
LOL, imagine hearing a Jew's Harp from someone's tent at night. That some Twilight Zone stuff. So funny.
Ha ha ha. I’d be scared for sure. I had that instrument since 1988 from the Philippines and it’s made out of bamboo. We call it Kubing. Thanks for watching.
Hi, how hard is it to go through old army pass? Is it dangerous?
It was steep climb but manageable. I just don’t know the condition of the trail now. Also I haven’t done Langley thru New Army Pass which I believed to be easier so no comparison there.
In Mt Whitney FB page, there were some recent post about their experience summiting Langley.
