Hey. Nice content ! Found it enjoyable to listen to. That being said, im shocked you havent mentioned the difference in screen aspect ratios. I got the macbook air m1 first, but I returned it because I found the laptop noticeably less enjoyable to use and work with due to its 16:10 ratio. Its still too wide and not tall enough, makes it feel so cluttered. The surface 4 and its 3:2 aspect ratio means less scrolling, much more effective multitasking and overall better productivity. Its just SO MUCH more enjoyable to use. Its a laptop after all, not a tv screen we are buying.
Great advice, I've had the SL4 for about 10 days now and all these videos about the performance of the Air have me questioning my purchase, but I have always been a Windows guy and the taller screen is probably one of my favourite features as well.
I'd get a Surface Laptop if they just offered it in metal for the entry-level price because alcantara is stinky and I don't like the concept of putting fabric on a machine
my friend just got the acantara and its nothing like what you would imagine, its more like a textured plastic, nothing fabric about it other than its softer feel! But I do prefer metal aeshthetically speaking.
I covered my pc in fur, it looks like a puppy that doesn’t move, it just whines when it gets hot. Maybe it’s because the fur???? Maybe it’s because it just ran hot before I made it into a large square puppy.?.?
I've owned my Surface Pro 3 for 11 yrs and the Alcantara keyboard has not been stained or worn out. Just that the edges where the top and bottom of the keypad meet, the glue has given way.
Great review! As a suggestion, it would be cool if you could do a side by side comparison when you do the camera tests. Like a split screen with the Macbook camera recording of yourself on one side and the Surface on the other, ya know?
Completely agree! I did this for my XPS/MBP13 comparison but forgot how useless it is to do a side-by-side comparison. It also cuts down on the time of the video as well. Thanks for the suggestion.

Sorry, what more can you do with the M1 CPU compared to what is in the Surface? I agree that the M1 has better single core speed compared toth e Ryzen 7 chips, but slower multicore speeds, and better CPU, but that's the only real benefit it has. If we look at battery drain tests around the place, power drain on both is roughly the same. Surely if we are considering the fucntionality side of things here, the Surface Laptop with touch screen and pen input wins out. As for Thunderbolt 3 being on the M1 Macbook, but not ont he Surface Laptop 4, it really honestly is a none issue for 99% of people. The only benefit that Thunderbolt has on the M1 is that external storage can be faster. The M1 can't take advantage of external GPU's, and it doesn't inherintly support more than 1 external display. The USB 3.1 Type C connector on the Surface Laptop 4 supports PowerDelivery, supports multiple external displays, as well as docks. Sure, it doesn't support as fast transfer speeds for external storage, but that's really not an issue for the majority of people out there.
M1 MBA can run apps on iOS and iPadOS. That's why it's more versatile. As for touch screen and Surface pen support on Surface Laptop, these functions are basically designed for Surface Pros. It's a huge hassle to keep moving your fingers between the keyboard and the screen, quite unergonomic, isn't it? Not to mention how terribly the touch interface works on Windows 10. In comparison, despite the absence of a touch-screen on Macbook Air, its large and user-friendly trackpad already provides an overwhelming experience. As to pen supports, an unstable screen without a kickstand that can stabilize your hands is also hard to write on. Furthermore, for my personal experience, I owned a Surface Pro 7 along with a Surface Pen (5the gen), but the Pen jittered from time to time, which really sucked, so I eventually abandoned to put up with these issues and ended up selling them. Yes, these traits are additional for a device, but not optimized and appropriate for laptops at all, so I wouldn't count them as a "plus".
@@Drift_0420 Sure, being able to use iOS/iPadOS apps on the Macbook adds some functionality, but considering how poorly optimized for keyboard and mouse (being designed for a touch OS environment) this functionality is limited. Not to mention, being a full Desktop OS, it will likely have far more robust alternatives for those apps anyway, so why would you want to use the iOS version? There might be some use cases that can really make use of iOS apps, but most of the time there are better alternatives out there. I also feel like I need to point out that using Windows you can very easily run Android apps in emulation. Again, it has limitations, but it works. So it's nothing something that the M1 chip is NEEDED to do, regardless of what Apple tells you. And surely you can appreciate that trading Multi Monitor support for the ability to poorly run some iOS apps is not a worthwhile trade off? Many people who want to use these devices for work will have no care for the iOS apps but really need 2+ monitors. The fact that M1 devices CAN'T support multiple monitors is a real killer. Not to mention the limited PCI lanes and IO ports really limits it's use in many scenarios. As for the touch screen being mainly for Surface Pro's (I'm guessing you mean 2-in-1 devices), nope. I use the touch screen on my laptops all the time. When I move to a device without touch screen I really miss it. Simply take a look at how many Windows laptops these days are coming with touch screens built in. It is a valuable addition that many people want these days. As for the pen, yeah using it on the laptop form factor isn't the best. But for doing simple things like signing documents, marking up documents or navigating web pages it comes in quite useful. It's not a replacement to a tablet with pen input, but it can be used on occasion and works very well. Both of those features are most certainly appropriate to Laptop form factor and are additional functionality you don't get on M1 Macs. Again, it was claimed in the video that there is additional functionality you get form the M1 chip. I am just pointing out the massive limitations and missing features that makes this untrue.
@@mathewkortum977 Installing a virtual machine is a big hassle, and Android apps running on it are quite laggy. Conversely, iOS apps are natively supported. Therefore, there's no comparison in terms of convenience, intuitiveness, and smoothness, and that is why few people use their Windows PC to run Android apps. Well, yes, It's not necessary to use mobile apps on a laptop, but why not make use of them if you can do so without any complicated procedure? It's certainly a bonus, considering nowadays more and more apps regarding livelihood have overtaken its PC version alternatives, or are even already mobile-exclusive; for example, Adidas Running. Connecting to 2 external monitors from M1 MBA can be solved by using a DisplayLink adaptor. Don't forget, you also need a Surface Dock when connecting Surface Laptop 4 to multiple monitors. I don't think Surface Laptop 4 wins here since its I/O is actually really limited unless you buy its proprietary overpriced Surace Dock, and not to mention how bulky it is. As to touch-screen availability. Well, do you really miss a touch screen when you use a Windows "Desktop"? The main reason why touch screens may seem to be helpful is that touchpads on Windows are actually worse (harder to use) than mouses; hence we need this "Extra" function to complement the shortcomings of touchpads on Windows. I've been using a laptop with a touch screen for more than 8 yrs, and after switching to Macbook Air, I feel it's easier and more delightful to use the trackpad itself on MBA than touchpads PLUS touch screens on Windows laptops. Surface Pen is helpful when signing an e-document, but is it really worth it spending another 99 dollars only for signing names? Well, if that Pen could play other roles, and then I would consider it more functional and worthy. But as I mentioned, I sold my Surface Pro 7 with the latest gen Surface Pen, since its low stability when I took notes and drew pictures, which was really annoying when it randomly jittered. On the other hand, by using an M1 MBA, you can send the documents through Airdrop to the iPhone and use its touch screen to sign names, which saves you 99 dollars from buying an awkward pen.
@@Drift_0420 As per my comments, the M1 processor is unable to natively support multiple external monitors. Using Displaying is a software solution to emulate virtual graphics outputs. It is laggy, low quality and impacts on the system. It is not a good solution. As for the Surface Laptop 4 needing the Service Dock to connect to multiple displays, no it doesn't. It's USB-C port supports PowerDelivery and DisplayPort. So all you need is a USB-C hub with multiple display outputs and you are golden. As for the Surface Laptop 4 having a lack of ports, all the M1 Macbooks have less. The Surface Laptop 4 can have USB devices connected while also connected to power. The Macbook with it's 2 ports can't. It is far more limited. As for missing touch, yes. Many people really like and use touch. You might not, and that's fine. But considering how many laptops are now being made with touch support, it's clearly a wanted and used feature. As for the Pen, you are clearly going out of your way to dislike anything not on the Surface. I mean, from Windows you can very easily share your document to your Android or iOS phone and sign (not locking you down to one phone type) but doing it easily from your computer without interupting workload or relying on multiple devices is ideal. The pen has many uses other than just signing a document, as I said. You simply don't want to think about it.
@@mathewkortum977 Both of these devices has excellent battery life. It's not that frequent to plug in the power cables when you use them. If you want to set up a desktop environment with these laptops and connect them to the power permanently, I guess you would use dongles for external monitors, which also provide many ports for data transferring.
Great comparison, the one thing that keeps me for getting the m1 mac, is the fact of compatibility issues, I allways used windows computers, and I know that everything I use on windows apps or games will work, but on mac even using parallels it's not guaranteed. I know it's more powerful but, buying something and then it doesn't work for what you want ? Is a waste of money. I've been looking for the surface laptop 3 and now 4 for a while, but those M1 gains have stopped me for getting either. Still on the fence
I'm literally in the exact same position as you. I've been using Windows for years and been researching Surface laptop 3 and then the 4 when it came out and now I've discovered how powerful the Mac is. I've never used Mac but I really can't deny how powerful the M1 chip is.
@@JackV315 i get it, design wise they are very similar and comparable, but surface has better color options in my opinion, the touch screen it's an option but not a big deal since I'm not used to touching a laptop screen but the problem is compatibility. If I was sure if the same stuff worked on mac via parallels or crossover I would buy it performance wise
@@RubenNeves22 Ah gotcha, I guess all you can do is more research on the programs and their compatibility. Or if you know anyone with a maybe Mac try it out on there? Good luck on your choice and hopefully it all ends up being compatible for what you're doing!!
@@JackV315 well I have a pretty decent flagship phone, just need a pretty powerful and decent laptop as well, I don't like gaming pcs and all that crazy design, I like the macbook design, sleek and professional but powerful enough if I want to game a little bit, not heavy stuff for that I have my Xbox but yeah

Nice comparison but would choose the default browsers rather than Chrome as both Edge and Safari are better in most ways, especially in battery and def performance. AAMD and Apple SSilicon are both great and easy wins over an Intel choice. Would not put you off either. Thanks!
Seems some are ignoring the persistent freezing/crashing on M1 MacBooks and paying too much attention to the usual benchmarks that never translate to real world difference when it comes to Apple devices.
I have an M1 air and haven't had issues since November but the past few days I've been having app freeze, apps like iMessage or even safari. I haven't had issues today though
Thanks for the review. One thing you probably need to take into account with the costs if you go down the path of getting a Mac Book Air and running windows in Parallels is that you will be up for the cost of Parallels and the cost of a Windows license as well so you would have to add that to the overall cost (if you don't have those licenses already).
Hold up, why is it that people always complain about Surface Laptops having reflective screens when the MacBook Airs screens looks even more reflective than the Surface Laptops? Hmmm just saying. Not you bro, I'm referring to the other UA-camrs.

Very good video. My biggest frustration regarding Apple is the refusal to place a touchscreen on its laptops. That’s a deal breaker. I have an iPhone with (obviously) a touch screen. Yet if I buy a MacBook I can’t touch the exact same icons I touch on my phone everyday? I have to use a trackpad or mouse? It’s insane. Anyone who gets used to a touchscreen laptop will never want to go back to not having one. Apple I’m sure doesn’t want to harm sales of iPads- that’s the truth about their refusal to add a touchscreen. So instead, Apple is losing sales on MacBooks that it can’t detect. But they’re real. I can’t possibly be the only one. Thanks for the premium, honest video.
@@mihirsrivastava8472 No matter what they’ve gained, they could’ve gained A LOT more by simply adding a touch screen (that HP adds on for only $40 and it works well) I have no doubt that Apples M1 has greatly increased sales. I even stopped and spent 30 minutes at Best Buy to check out buying a MacBook. Cash in hand....but I didn’t buy. Why? Two reasons: no touchscreen and apples crappy, and it is CRAPPY, “Apple Care” scheme. They want another $259 to warranty accidents? Ok, sounds reasonable. Until you read the fine print. After their one year warranty is over, IF you have “apple care” that you already spent $259 + tax on, you get to pay $300 for ANYTHING to be repaired other than a cracked screen (which is $99 if you have apple care) A friend of mine has a MacBook Air in Texas that’s 1 &1/2 yrs old, and has “Apple care”. He had a stuck “e” key. It’s tough to type without vowels. Z? Sure. But an “e”? Not so much. Apple charged him $300 to fix THEIR defect. So 1.5 yrs after buying his beloved MacBook Air, and taking pristine care of his machine, he has forked over $280 for App Ca with sales tax, plus another $300 to have a “genius” fix his “e” key. Plus his time and gas. Almost $600 besides his original purchase price for the laptop. Does that sound remotely reasonable for a $1000+ “premium” laptop that’s only 1.5 years old?? And what happens if he needs another repair, which he very well may?? Another $300 to Apple. 🙄 He’ll have almost paid for a second machine. People should think hard about this before jumping on the Apple bandwagon, over the M1 chip, that most are only going to use to surf the web and watch Netflix.
So with the lack of high end MacBook's at WWDC, do you think if I were to buy a Mac Air that I could sell it at near cost when the new M1X finally comes out? That's the laptop I really want and need, so I either wait (painfully with my current laptop) or invest in an intermediate. You make it sound like I should be able to get more than half my money back which doesn't sound that bad.
With the chip shortage seeming to be even more shorted as the year goes on, I'm not 100%, but fairly confident that you can probably sell it for a around the same for what you paid for it, maybe ~$200 less than what you paid max. Nearly the cost of the M1X? I don't think so, I feel like they will replace the upper model which starts at $1799.
M1 Macbook air is hard to beat. Picked up a refurb 16gb ram for $1k. The value is there for sure. It crushed my older $3k 15in MBP in pretty much every stat catg.
Any Windows laptop can easily beat it. no touch screen no pen support no face recognition no HDMI port no MicroSD slot no 4k screen no 2-in-1 design no 180-degree screen no 1080p webcam history of poor keyboard history of overheating history thermothrottling history is green screen issues poor gaming experience No wonder MBs enjoy 7-8% laptop market share...lol
You can download MS Office, but you must have a subscription of Office365 in order to use it. I know with new Windows laptop they give you a trial or a year for free.
Apple putting the M1 into the IPad Pro pretty much solidifies that there will not be a MacBook with touch screen. And I’m totally fine with that. And Apple claims 19 hours video playback using Apple TV app.

You can't use chrome in both of these machine to test battery life. Chrome is. very inefficient on MacBook. Please test again with Safari. Also turn off Automatically Ajust Brightness and True Tone. I turned off Auto Brightness Adjustment, True Tone and Bluetooth, put brightness and volume at 50%, I played Impulse episode 1 on UA-cam (free ep) on safari and found out that it took close to 11 minute to degree 1% which is 18 hours for 100% (I made sure that it started at exactly 99% and ended at exactly 94%).
Uh, no they won't, a lot of people don't like dealing with MacOS. It's a very closed system and does not offer the flexibility that many IT professionals and enthusiasts prefer. You only see MacOS acceptance in groups that don't stray far from default software configurations. @@raffiefoxmew3691 Mac shipments increase 50% year to year and M1 MacBook only came out last quarter, reviews from UA-camr are stellar, software transition for M1 is happening at an incredible rate. People don't buy a laptop to configure and customize they want laptop that just work. I am a software dev, I prefer MacOS over Ubuntu and Windows and most of my peer feel the same. Ubuntu is great but it lacks support and windows is just bad for software dev. I also realize that most software company give their developers MacBooks. There is hype around Apple products, whenever there is an Apple event you see tech enthusiast and reporter talk about it all over the news, it is not the same with Microsoft or any other company. If you live in the U.S. how many teens you see are using AirPods, iPhone? Do you think they will eventually get a MacBook as well? Do you think iPhone also lack of customization? Why are iPhone still thriving? The only group of people who will probably never going to use a MacBook are gamers. Not sure if it is going to change but pretty sure in the next 3-4 years gamer will still better off with a gaming laptop.
One question? How the hell do you guys get the money to purchase such expensive laptops on a regular basis? Share the secret mantra with us! (new MKBHD on the way!)
tbh while the m1 mac is powerful, the amd is no slouch either. Unless ur video editing or doing graphic design for anything as intesive as coding, both will serve you fine. In that case, power becomes a little redundant and the laptops become equal in the eyes of the customer. Also, I dont know about the usa, but in australia and india the surface laptop is quite a bit cheaper than the macbook.
They're actually identical (999 USD) in the US in terms of the basic models. Despite being cheaper, AMD processor's performance drops dramatically without electric cable plugged in. In comparison, M1 and intel processors are much more consistent. Well, as to low-intensive daily usages, speed of web browsing also varies. M1 > intel > AMD.
Your use of "probably", "maybe", "I think", "most likely" in almost every sentence, makes you sound not confident at all. "The M1 performs better" - simple as that. If you aren't sure, do the test, you have both machines, or even cite another reliable tester on UA-cam
You can upgrade the GPU by itself with the M1, if you get the 16gb RAM version you get the 8 GPU you cores. M1 has thunderbolt 3 ports, USB 4, which are basically the same thing.
I was pretty surprised with the battery life test. Windows laptops are notorious for poor battery life so 12 hours is a improvement and acceptable. My previous surface laptop 3 only lasted 8 hours out of the box so I ended up returning it. I will note though, you can probably get to 15 hours on the M1 if you use safari as the browser. Chrome, even the optimized version drains more power than safari by up to two times. There is a guy who did a comparison between battery drain for different browsers for the m1. ua-cam.com/video/eQuJdy1OeR8/v-deo.html

Review is fine, however some of the points i had a bit of gripe with. For instance the amount of 'personal preference' included in this video. Please be more objective when reviewing or comparing any technology, thanks. Personal opinions are fine say, at the end or as an afterthought, but not throughout the review. It just comes across as insincere and biased, which admittedly you did mention. Stuff like bringing up previous faults with older devices (screen cracks), but only for the one you prefer less personally but not the issues with the other historically like all the butterfly keyboard issues, yea that's pure bias. It's incredible to see the different UA-camr's dealing with this very close call between big device brands though.
Each category I objectively awarded a winner, and I agree the personal preference should be saved to the end. The reason I didn't bring up butterfly keyboards is because they simply don't exist on the current MacBook Air and the keyboard has been used on the 16 inch MacBook already with no complaints. Microsoft seems to be using the exact same chassis for the surface laptop 4 so it's highly likely that the cracking screen issue could happen again.
@@DayoAworunse Thank you for your acknowledgement. I did some deep research on the screen cracking on gen 3. It appears according to a statement released by MS that it was hard particulates getting into the chassis causing the glass to shatter. As you mentioned they have supported this and repaired users devices. They have also acknowledged the flaw that caused the incursion so while it's not 100% certain, it seems safe to say they will have solved it or at least improved it for gen 4. Until that appears not to have been effective, some benefit of doubt is due in the same way given to Apples new keyboard at this time. Also worth pointing out a lot more right to repair available to users on Surface devices vs. Apple and worth mentioning in future comparisons. It is a veeeery hot topic right now with what is going on with Louis Rossmans bill fundraiser.

I agree that the M1 has better single core speed compared toth e Ryzen 7 chips, but slower multicore speeds, and better CPU, but that's the only real benefit it has. If we look at battery drain tests around the place, power drain on both is roughly the same.

@@mathewkortum977
Installing a virtual machine is a big hassle, and Android apps running on it are quite laggy.
You made my day!

Not everyone uses Parallels, in fact, most users don't. It wouldn't make sense to add the price

This might be the most premium honest comment I've seen in awhile
Apple gained around 50% new people to Macs last quarter, with a 70% increase, so I don't think they're worried about losing sales.
After their one year warranty is over, IF you have “apple care” that you already spent $259 + tax on, you get to pay $300 for ANYTHING to be repaired other than a cracked screen (which is $99 if you have apple care)
A friend of mine has a MacBook Air in Texas that’s 1 &1/2 yrs old, and has “Apple care”.

Please with the nonsense. MBs are pure garage.
Google "Louis Rossman". End of story...lol
@@msp5138 I know that dude and his only way to make money is just by ranting against everything apple makes. Not a trustworthy source. Just look at the facts, you get more out of your money if you go with Mbs this year then windows laptops. These M1 Processors are really good
Ahahaha first come first serve in my mail box
surface laptop 4 has touch screen with pen support but surface laptop 3 does not
The macbook's webcam is not acceptable at all, especially by todays standards.
In a box 10 times smaller than your screen you will not see any difference..

Ugh. Can't stand MacOS.
Aaand no word about bending keyboard panel on surface laptop
windows surface laptop 4 is best then this stupid macbook air
@@Andrizza Please don't mention "Louis Rossman" to Apple fanbois. You'll give them a heart attack...lol
