Gayle I apologize for such a long wait on a response. Double ground mulch goes on 2" strong throughout the entire bed. I always keep mulch beneath the grass roots. So if you edges are 4" deep and you put 2" of mulch down then you are 2" lower than the grass, which is perfect because grass roots typically grow around 2" deep. If you put mulch from the bed flush with the top of the grass then the grass roots will have something to grow in and will cause more work for you. You want a deep crisp edge free of grass and weeds.
Finally! A landscaper who knows what he's doing! Great job!
You used just the right amount of words! I've been gardening for 50+ years and go to a lot of lectures; just came from one today. Dr. Shapiro talked on gardening for butterflies. Looking forward to watching more of your videos.
Yo - I don’t know why this video made me happy. It’s really informative, don’t get me wrong, but... the red hair, the Joel Osteen haircut and the banjo background music just go together perfectly. I friggin love it! This guy should be on HGTV.
Beautiful!!! I love getting outside & getting dirty. Over many years of flower gardening & landscaping, I usually have to do it sitting down & w/hand tools. I’m only 44, but already have a bad back & knees- landscaping is hard work. But there’s nothing like creating your own paradise & knowing u put in the work! Love what u did!!🌿🌺🌳
Great video! I'm a SAHM who loves doing my own yard work but was hesitant about edging. You've made it look so easy and I'm looking forward to seeing those beautiful, crisp edges!
I'm a SAHM, too! Doing the same thing!
*I know this was 3 years ago for you!
Great video. I re-edged my beds and it took much longer. I had to spade through roots on all four sides before removing each clump of edging. Then I had to dig back about 3 feet from the edge to make a graceful slope down to the edge.
I am glad you like the video and it is help to you and your landscape. this whole video thing is pretty new to me and I am still trying to improve and may be long winded for a few but I just am trying to cover all questions. I will get faster and more to the point in the future. I talk on the fly and nothing is scripted and the filming and editing is quite time-consuming being a one man show.
Thanks for doing the video and giving strangers the benefit of your experience and knowledge. I personally appreciate explanations as to WHY to do things, as opposed to just a silent demonstration. By the way, the mullet is back in, so you are ahead of the game.
You gave me the confidence to edge my own planting beds AND I have the right tools for the job. Thanks!
Beautiful! This is exactly what I want in our yard. My husband wants to buy the power edger, but I think this would be better. Thanks for showing us how easy it actually is.
Loved your video. Straight and to the point. Non of that blablabla. Everything you said was useful used just the right words . Not boring. Loved it!!
The best video about how to make edge of your garden bed. The best!
I just purchased the razor back shovel that he uses. I had not idea that products of this quality existed. It's heavy made from good steel, strong steel handle and shaft, a 26 or 28" shovel, rubber pads. At Walmart it's $82 including tax. It's the best investment for people who do our own gardening and edging. The video and person are right on.
Well done, good choice of tools and great eye/precision for lines and curves. Nothing like a little yard therapy and instant gratification for the soul, heart and mind too!
Thank you very much I just did what you said to my garden and it looks great. Not perfect, but in time it will get better. I am happy how it turned out so is my husband.
Excellent information. For me, it was the right amount of "speech" before the action as someone referred to. Lol. Love the energy, plus the beds look wonderful. Thanks for uploading a strong, professional vid!
Tim B...Yelp, his good
Tim Brown Thank you for you encouraging words. I am not a professional videographer or actor but speak as I go trying to stay to the point, teach correctly how I do things and try not to bore. Thank you again!
BEAUTIFUL FLOWER BEDS. HAVE A BLESSED WEEKEND.
Great job! Watch how he follows his foot and prys off of it. Great way to keep your bed smooth! Finish off with a weed wacker n edge it when you cut and it will look awesome all year. Other edging videos are terrible compared to this! This is how a pro does it!
A video with personality, how refreshng! 4 stars
Great video! Love your enthusiasm! Is obvious you LOVE what you do! Thank you SO much for showing me how to get a crisp edge! Really good "mix" of explaining, showing, and editing.
Loved it, you get right to the point and love your humor. Looks very nice
I wish I had someone like you to edge my yard. Love the idea no cost. You did a good job explaining all to us. Thank you.
I love your personality, I'm happy looking at your work. Thank you for sharing. Great job.
FRANCES LALCHAN thank you for your encouraging words, people like you make me want to do more videos if they help. I am a very passionate high energy person that loves horticulture and am learning to video and script not to be boring but to the point and educational. Thank you again, skyranger56
Nice.
Love, love, love this guy! Excellent job explaining what to do. Made it look so easy. Now I want to go out and buy those tools recommended. Can't wait to try this myself.
Can't thank you enough for your video. We had no idea what we were doing until we say your video. Simple and works! THank you, thank you, thank you!!
I’ve been watching DIY videos as needed for 10 years or more. I’ve never commented. Never liked. This was simple stuff, artfully so. Thanks for the great job framing the fundamentals for regular people: you outlined the most essential tools needed, how importantly is to keep your spade sharp (🤯 Why’d didn’t I ever think of this? I don’t drive on flat tires or cut with a Dull knife? Duh!!). That alone was worth 10 minutes, for which it’s usually terribly hard for me to focus. I took longer typing this comment with my thumbs.
Perfect--encouraging, fun and detailed. Thank you! I'm starting my edging bright and early tomorrow. M
Pat I am glad I could be of some help. Here in Ohio I use double ground non died bark mulch, spread about 2" thick with a pitchfork. I am pretty new to the whole video thing and try and stay on topic and to the point but my energy and passion tend to take over possibly rambling on but that is who I am. As for my looks this is how God made me and I am proud of who I am and have to say am quite attached to my mullet...it is the secret to my energy. LOL!
skyranger56
love the do-it-yourself flower bed edging demo skyranger56! so helpful and not boring to watch!
I Loved the Video! I'm Gonna get back out to make my Flower bed look better and straighten up my Edging!! Thanks for the Inspiration!
Great, informational video! I got a bid on having a professional do an island bed in our front yard, but I have all the tools to try it myself. I noticed you use the side of your boot to guide the shovel. I'm going to give this a try. Thanks!
Yes, I use the edge of my boot like a guide but more of a pivot point for the shovel and keep a nice straight edge when you remove the grass. If you do not pivot on your boot the shovel will have a hard time keeping a nice sharp edge and roll the top edge over from the shovel. This sometimes pinches and can be uncomfortable but it toughens you up👍💪. Good luck! skyranger56
I’m going to give it a try. Haven’t had much luck before using a different tool. I like how you used your boot as a line to follow
Great job.Very professional looking.I'm headed to Home depot to buy a Spade. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome video! You have so much energy and it really gets you excited to get out there and edge your lawn. Thanks
This video was quite helpful to me..the end result looked beautiful! I keep looking for something to make yard work "easy"...not gonna happen!
Best video of all the ones I've watched so far! Love the detailed explanation and clear view of what you are doing. Thanks!
Appreciate this straight forward, helpful video. Nicely done .. get right to it, not a lot of time wasted on unnessesary chit chat 😊. Thank you!
Sadly, I cannot find the "next video" mentioned about mulching after this edge cutting.
Very nice video & job edging. It is clear you love what you do, that's why you do it so well!
Thanks for making this video.
Awesome results. I was using the half moon tool but will get the straight edged tool to do it. Beautiful yard!
enjoyed the video, we are about to get our first house and I LOVE flowers and cant wait to buy me the edging tool!!!! :) God Bless and thanks so much
+Christina Newhart terrible video
Fantastic informative video 👌🏼.
I’m a beginner & have no clue about garden edging etc , your video is spot on 🎯 .
Thanks 🙏🏼
Brilliant video thank you for up loading. I am going to take your advice when I edge my lawn this week. Your energy and personality is first class. What a great guy !
Glad to here this Shiela, just be sure to have the right tools and practice makes perfect. Work on the technique and speed will follow.
He makes this look so easy... I have SO many rocks in my yard that every dig would hit them and slow me way down.
Your good, I enjoyed...Good guidence and info, loved the natural enthusiasm and not too much excessive talk and time~ gave me some more motivation to go in my postage stamp size urban yard~ ty
Thanks. Spent the morning doing this on one of my beds. Lock down giving us lots of time for the garden :)
Nicely done video. Very helpful and encouraging. I love the camera work at the end.
This was sooo helpful I love the way he explains things
great info and tools to get the job done. Fun video to watch
Thank you for explaining this. Nice work.
This video gave me the motivation to do it by myself ! 👍
Good stuff! Can't wait to edge my beds after the snow melts.
Great video! When hiring landscapers I wish they had 1/4 of you enthusiasm.
Thank you! I believe no matter what you do give it your best, 100%, be thankful and exceed expectations.
Wow! Perfect information and exactly what I needed! Very well done video as well! Thanks so much!
Nice job, thanks for sharing!
Good job on the video. Really helped me out a lot. Beautiful place you have.
It looks great!! Professional!!
Thanks for sharing!!😊
Thanks for the tips. I have all those tools... I have hard clay soil..ugh! I get blisters between my thumb and my index everytime. But hey, I have lovely flower beds! I never thought to use my pitch fork to pick up the remnants, so much better than the shovel. A few questions, I keep everything and have a big pile in the back that includes clippings, leaves, remnants from edging... What do you do with your 'piles'? Id like to compost but i'm worried the grass will grow wherever I use the dirt in the future? And another video? Keeping the beds clean from debris/leaves without loosing all the mulch? I blow leaves but mulch ends up everywhere in the grass even as careful as I can be. Thinking of using a 'leaf sucker upper' lol for getting leaves out of the edging? Your thoughts?
Beautiful job! Thanks for sharing.
Perfect video...trying this tomorrow...thanks
OMG that simply looks like a gorgeous garden...
Can't wait for summer.
Good advice. I thought that fork was going in your foot for sure, lol.
looks great any ideas on how to make a clean , non jagged line
Use spray paint to make line and follow, otherwise it is just by eye and lots of practice.👍
Hose pipe
Why are you putting the grass plugs from edging back in the bed ? In Florida, you would have grass growing in the bed.
puppy love I am only placing them in bed while I edge and then am cleaning them out with pitchfork when finished edging. This way is more efficient for me and do not have to constantly move wheelbarrow around. Thank you!
Pippy Love you obviously didn't watch the whole video. He cleans up the plugs at the end of the video.
haha This man has the best energy.
i want to see mulch video, i'm going to try the edging this weekend
beautiful! And cost effective too.
Great video, very helpful, and it truly is a very fun, exciting adventure/ favorite projects, very exciting 😀😀😀
Diana Daisy Duke glad I could help encourage you and not be to boring. I am still learning this whole video thing and speak as I go but trying to teach and stay on track with task. Thank you, skyranger56
Great video
Such a natural. It gave me good ideas.
Great video! Appreciate the information and before and after pics!
Very nice!
How do you keep your lawnmower wheels from dropping into the abyss and digging out your neat edging?
Most mower decks are wider than the wheels so you plan the shape of your bed to fit the radius of your mower. I have a 52" zero turn and the deck is 12"-18" further out than the wheels so it hovers over our beds perfectly. Make your landscape blend with your equipment so your mowing and yard work will be faster and more enjoyable. Thanks for the great question! SKYRANGER56
@@skyranger56 Prefer a tractor. Hate those go cart things with mower decks. You ain't careful with them, they'll flip you out of that thing. Besides, you can do MUCH, MUCH MORE with a tractor and attachments such as plow snow, plow and disc your garden as well as cultivate it. Other than mowing grass, what can you do with these junky zero turn radius garbage go carts with mower decks things. Tractors are the very BEST!
Great video. I'll need to go out and buy a landscaper's spade. It seems like a great tool to have. I'm curious though, how do you get your hostas to grow so large? Mine stay small and get smaller every year it seems. It's one of my favorite plants. Thanks again for the video!
I'm a landscaper for 20 years. That edge looks awesome. But you need to trim edge w weedeater make it even cleaner then mulch that mother. Btw beautiful backyard
omg! I love this video!! I want to leave work and go edge my beds! Thank you so much for posting!
Great video!
Great video. I watched about 10 n urs was the best. Great description of technique. Thanks much n happy summer :))
I am inspired, thank you!
loved, loved the video, learned alot. No you did not talk to much was great. And I love the mullet. What kind of mulch are you going to use? I don't know much about landscaping so what do you recommend? Live in fl. and was wondering if cedar is the best?
Pat I responded to your question but on my page so please check what I wrote and promise to get better at this UA-cam thing.
Thanks now I know how to do my edging! Great tutorial
I'm going to give it a try.
Mr. Roger of egding👷👷
You are giving me the Motivation to do it. :)
Beautiful edge! Your shovel is clearly sharper than mine.
Sharper than mine too. I bought a file and am going to try to sharpen the spade and hoe. Now need a pitchfork.
Beautiful! how have I never known to do this?! I definitely need to do this, thank you for the informative video. I have a question. You mentioned reusing your edging waste in other areas of your lawn. Can you speak to this in more depth, please?
Awesome video!!!
Clear explanation both verbally and the videography of how to edge with encouragement! Nice aerial view at the end. The best video I've seen so far and Ive seen a lot on edging during this lockdown. Thank you :)
great tutorial
really wonderful if you have soil with the consistency of coffee grounds. we are upstate New York and the soil has stones. Whole different scenario
Doing this for years.
NEVER throw dirt away!
I would like to create a flower bed on the outer edges of my lawn, but the soil is rocky and has tree roots. How deep does the bed need to be to accommodate perennials?
Great video. Thanks.
Love the video, I like it when somebody shows that hard work can be fun work, and then oh so, so rewarding!... BUT, aww shucks, ... I really was hoping to see how you handled working around those tree roots that were surfacing on the bend of the bed.
What/how did you do that portion of the bed???😁 will those roots always be a problem?
I have critical question. I live in Ca. We have a terrible awful problem with crabgrass. Bermuda grass. My whole life. It’s heartbreaking. It’s aggressive tentacles and underground devil grass reach have invaded all of my beds. Is this edging technique going to be enough? I landed here because I was thinking installing a proper brick edging that is flush with my lawn, would minimize work. But I like the idea of a lower trenched edge that I could run one side of the wheels into over with the mower and get real close. I will be forced to use a weed eater trimmer if I have any masonry type edge. What would you recommend? PS your video is full of gardening wisdom that you cannot buy. I loved it.
I would go with a 4" to 6" deep edge. Grass roots will typically not go deeper than 3". My edges are deep and I never have issues with grass roots growing into them as long as you keep your mulch low to where as the roots will not grow into the mulch but rather their roots dry out in the air before reaching your bed. I have a specific 12" wheel on my weed eater that roles inside of my bed edge that keeps the grass manicured and easy to keep up with. Thanks for the question, skyranger56
skyranger56 TY. I just bought a king of spades nursery spade on your advice. I’m going to practice mow to choose the rough draft on my bed shape.
I just subscribed, love your videos! Just have a question would you recommend having a bed full of fruit trees or would the roots have a bad effect with one another since the roots are pretty big on fruit plants? Please help
Good job and nice garden
OK you have the right spayed but you need a trimmer take the guard off you can flip it around and cut the line into the grass that you want to cut with your spade that way it’s perfect
