@@cristallaprade5487 Of course. But that complexity is what makes it so interesting and rewarding :) Tons of great books on it. Carol Deppe's reference is a good one that comes to mind! On breeding + saving. (And for squash types that can cross I'd consider barriers for if very serious about lineage - organza/tulle works well and comes in rolls to make your own little bags. I often just stick to one variety of what can cross per year, though with ones that need a mile+ radius it can sometimes come down to luck or living with the outcome which isn't always bad!)

To all the new gardeners out there. Take a look around your neighborhood, and see if you can find someone who has been gardening for years. Us experienced gardeners usually live to share their love of gardening. We can help with local growing conditions, soil conditions, and maybe have a few.seeds from our packet to share. Consider finding a local seed sharing group. Make your seed starting mix. Rent a tiller.
Please do not give up gardening because of everything going on. You just have to get creative.

Yes, I work in a plant store and we’ve had trouble getting certain things. Canna products, nitrile gloves, and especially terra cotta, much of which is produced in Italy.
The advice to get gardens started now is really good, especially if you’re going to be digging up sod and putting it at the bottom of raised beds. I moved in August and got a whole ornamental garden planned, dug and mulched, and moved the plants from the old place, so I’ve taken a bit of a breather, but this was a great reminder to get my raised beds set up so that the sod can die and start composting so that things will grow better in the spring. Those beds are gonna go out there in the next week or so.

I'm very happy to be ready well in advance I'm ready in February I get all my seeds then I still pick up new things to try. I switched to no dig 3 years ago. The seed kits now available are great options for first time gardening or getting a big garden with lots of options on a budget.

I would like to make one suggestion for an episode. Can you do one one your favorite tools and why you like that tool over others. i.e hand pruners. There’s a million styles of them !! Thanks...

I have everything for my 5 8’x4’x11” raised beds except the soil. My greenhouse is built, I’ve got my raised bed materials and all my seeds, starter cells and starter soil. I’ve been buying a little at a time since March. In my area I can only get soil from Walmart during garden season or our wonderful garden center anytime. I can get enough soil for all 5 beds for $1000! 😳 My son friended a nearby rancher/petting farm and they will give me all the Llama/Alpaca manure that I want.

Fill them as cheap as you can so you can save that money for other things. Compost works great!

Look into local towns around you. They usually have “compost” for sale that is cheap.

    • @NoCatStrangling
      @NoCatStrangling 3 роки тому +1

@@braedonshelton2305 maybe so, but you have NO IDEA what sorts of pesticide-ridden materials you are getting! Much safer to make your own compost & leaf mould.

I got around a few of those problems.
I do no till gardening, so there is the tiller issue solved.
I used big rocks for raised beds. They should last longer than wood.
I am getting better at seed saving. Plus, I already bought most of my seeds.
Thanks for the tip about potting mix at Home Depot.
I agree with you, that this is really good that so many people are getting in to gardening

My local blue store already has it's seed displays and summer-flowering bulbs and tubers up, so I definitely grabbed some when I was there the other day. Good call on grabbing more soil, though. I will have at least two new raised beds to fill this year and it might be worth it to go ahead and have the fill dirt handy!

There are 2 huge 4000+ sq ft new homes being built on a former 10 acre farm (split into 5 acres each) next door to my farm. At the price of lumber and new construction right now the cost has to be ridiculous.
Already got all my seeds and supplies for 2021 garden and making lots of compost. Finally bought a broad fork so should save me time loosening soil in the spring. Outdoor planting time will be here soon! Happy gardening!

This is why I cleaned up on end of season seeds last fall, and put in a seed order a few days ago to fill in the holes. I've also stocked up on canning jar lids. I was in pretty decent shape last spring using what seeds were leftover from the year before, but that only lasts so long.
Also if you haven't thought about it, get a dehydrator. The things that I couldn't can, or freeze got dehydrated. I dehydrated things I don't normally like onions and garlic. I'm sure glad that I did. My dehydrating tasted so much better than what I got from the store. I will be doing it again next year.
I'm glad you mentioned potting mix and gloves. I wouldn't have thought of that. I'll see about getting some next time I'm at the store. That gets me to thinking that seed starting pots might be a good idea too.
