I think the original idea was that the interceptors detonate huge explosions in the path of fast moving ufos and however many there are they run into it and detonate. This is contradicted later on when interceptors are shown shooting down individual targets like they are dogfighting spitfires.
More to the point why do the UFOs always approach Earth from the direction of the Moon, why not from the side farthest away from the Moon thereby avoiding Moonbase altogether?
You have to remember that the UFOs are travelling at SOL 3 or higher--that is a multiple of the speed of light. So you're never going to get a second shot and it's amazing that they ever hit them at all. I think that the poster who said that "It's a big explosion and they hope that it's just in the way of whatever passes through it" is close to the truth.
Other unanswerable questions related to the Stingray episode An Echo of Danger are how did X20 survive the fall from the tower when he was posing as a window cleaner and how did Commander Shore, Atlanta and Lt. Fisher not hear the cradle crash and the "window cleaner" shouting?
1. What is Operation Sword? 2. Who started the fire in Scarlet and Blue's bedroom at Koala Base in Traitor? 3. What was the "Most Dangerous" mission mentioned in Tom Thumb Tempest? 4. How exactly did the Mysterons kill Dr Breck in Shadow of Fear? 5. Why didn't Titan think to find a stronger metal to build the Mechanical Fish fleet after so many were destroyed?
Perhaps the building itself has an advanced form of radar built into its structure? And perhaps the presence of the collective consciousness of the people within it are part of that technology's needs?
1. Tests the fake gravity on the inside, ready for use in space. 2. Makes the communication systems better. I have no backing for this, but for some reason I can imagine the spinning of the tower boosts the XL ships communication system.
I don't think the existence of SPECTRUM was a secret, which makes it almost unique among the organisations in Gerry Anderson's shows. I don't remember Colonel White, Captain Scarlet, or anyone else talking about the need for secrecy in the way that the members of International Rescue did.
What if... Its existence is not secret. Its operations mainly are. The markings are useful for psychological effect in reassuring the public that SPECTRUM is on the job. This helps justify multinational funding.
@@TheRob625 Good point. The Mysterons already knew about SPECTRUM and everyone on the planet knew about the Mysterons because of the Voice. What would be the point of keeping the existence of the organization fighting the Mysterons secret from everybody except the Mysterons?
On Space 1999 where did all the new uniforms come from in season 2 and with all the eagles blown up, how did they manage to keep upgrading them as they did in season 2?
It might have been in another video, but I recently remembered someone saying that 'Operation Sword' is referred to extensively in Shadow of Fear and then completely dropped afterwards - I did have a bit of a theory as to what it could actually be, based on a couple of other episodes that (don''t by name but) could allude to it: > Flight 104 The episode centres around a conference intended to devise a way to deal with the Mysterons - Operation Sword could have been the result of that. > Shadow of Fear Obtaining close-up images of Mars is described as the 'first step' in the plan - could have been intended to determine landing sites/locate the Mysteron complex. > Noose of Ice It's mentioned that a full space fleet is being constructed for a return to Mars - this could be the overall aim of the operation.
I'm pretty sure somewhere in Noose of ice someone mentioned that that was Operation Sword, or at the very least that was the plan somewhere along the line
In "Operation Time" and "Flight 104" we learn new stuff about the Mysteron agents like being shielded for X-Rays, sensitive for electricity and becoming silhuettes on photos. How come that such stuff were unknown while Dr Fawn (like the very FIRST doctor to examine an Mysteron agent!!!) was looking after Scarlet between "Mysterons" and "Winged Assassin"? Pretty sure the medical ward of Cloudbase has an x-ray machine and Dr Fawn probably has to make photos for his reports.

Colonel White alluded to Captain Brown possibly being a trigger for a larger bomb somewhere in the building. If that is the case, the question should be how did the Mysterons get the "larger bomb" into the Maximum Security building?
In Stingray the master plan when Troy and Phones enter first Titanica they have their usual red and blue futuristic guns out, then when they enter Titans throne room and have a gun fight with the 2 guards, they have normal looking hand guns.
Regarding the Supercar access question: everyone climbs in (or out) by opening the top part of the canopy. Regarding the Fireball XL5/Space City launch question: as seen in episodes such as "The Triads" and "Flight to Danger", Space City possessed several other launch pads. The launch rail was reserved for rapid deployment of the Fireballs.
In Captain Scarlet, why does Cloud Base not have any defensive gun mounts? Also, in the _Mercury Falling,_ episode, is the Mercury a nod to Fireball XL5? Certainly looks like an upgraded one.
In UFO, the Interceptors are based in carefully camouflaged underground hangers. So why is the main part of Moonbase out in the open, with no attempt at concealment? And why is the landing pad/launch cradle for the Lunar Module right on top of one of the habitation domes? That doesn't seem safe at all.

In the Thunderbirds episode Day Of Disaster, why does the MSP blow up once it launches form the water, wasn’t it designed to automatically launch without trouble once it was placed upright?
I'm guessing the conductivity of water cross-circuited its attitude control rockets, igniting the onboard fuel. It was never designed to be submerged for such a lengthy time.
During its launch sequence, how does Thunderbird 1 rotate 90 degrees as it leaves the sloping part of its track before emerging onto the level section? (this happens in the TV show but not in the movie "Thunderbirds Are Go" (1966))

In Space 1999 episode 1 Breakaway it's mentioned several times that the nuclear waste sites (that eventually explode) are on the far side of the moon (i.e. the side hidden from earth view). So when the nuclear waste sites explode, why does it push the moon out of orbit away from the earth? Surely it should push the moon towards the earth causing the earth and moon to collide? In Terrahawks, why is Kate Kestral a pop singer and a fighter pilot? Was there nobody a little less conspicuous? How does the press not notice that she vanishes for days at a time, given how intrusive they are? In the Terrahawks song SOS (a banger for sure), Kate refers to International Rescue. Since Terrahawks takes place in 2020 and Thunderbirds takes place long after this, Kate is either a time traveller or Thunderbirds exists as a TV show in the Terrahawks universe. If that's the case, why is one of the biggest pop stars on the planet singing about a relatively obscure children's show that came out long before she was born? In Thunderbirds, why is Thunderbird 4 (a pod vehicle) given a number while all the rest of the pod vehicles are named? What happens on Earth after the explosion in Space: 1999? (This is probably answerable by a physicist but I would like to know) In Thunderbirds, why is there only 1 emergency happening at any given time? Are safety standards that good or are there a lot fewer people on earth? How does Thunderbird 2 get to its launchpad? The launch sequence shows it taxiing but it has no wheels. Is the launch accompanied by an ungodly screech of metal-on-concrete?
Thunderbird 4 has a number in recognition of Gordon's relevance as pilot of their only dedicated submersible Thunderbird. If every other brother gets a numbered ship, why not the underwater expert? Thunderbird 4 is not a true pod vehicle (see it launching via the Tracy Island ramp, or even carried by military ship), it's just designed to be transported with the same convenience of a pod vehicle for faster travel to the disaster zone. And when doing so, it notably uses its own buoyant pod with a launch ramp built in.
Why is SHADO called SHADO? It stands for Supreme Headquarters Alien Defence Organisation - but surely by definition that should only apply to the headquarters under the film studio? It’s mentioned that it has installations all over the world and the moon base - so isn’t a more accurate organisation ADO...Alien Defence Organisation. If there are such things as Mark IX Hawks, why were none assigned to Moonbase Alpha? Why build a spacecraft equivalent of a jet fighter and then not assign any to one base that may need them? In the UFO Episode the ‘Long Sleep’ why go to the trouble of getting someone to sit beside a hospital patient for 10 years, just on the off-chance she’ll wake up, remember where she dropped the detonator, go back there, find it on the very small chance that it hadn’t been cleared away somewhere else, recover it, go back to where you’d left the device assuming it hadn’t been cleared away elsewhere and then detonate it. The odds of that plan coming off was so astronomically small as almost infinitesimal. It would have been easier to go back and get another detonator or another complete bomb!
As far as the Mark IX Hawks are concerned, I remember reading (although I can't remember where exactly; maybe a Blueprints set) that SHADO eventually developed the Hawks to engage UFOs, but by the time the design was finalized UFO sightings mysteriously stopped. The Hawks were very expensive to build and only about 4 were constructed. It was considered Tactically more advantageous to station them at the Space Dock where the Meta Probe was to be launched from, and all the Hawks were lost when the Space Dock exploded on 9/13/1999.

Why does Marineville have to head underground to avoid attacks when "Battle stations" is announced? Not in the 1960's. No digital tech. Physical matte work and glass paintings, and the Schufftan process. All expensive. I know Thunderbirds is set in about 2065, but it mirrors real life in 1965. In the 1930's the best way to show characters being shot at, in gangster movies and westerns... Was to actually have someone shoot at the actors, with live ammunition. 1931's 'The Public Enemy' is the best example of this. It's a brilliant movie, too.

It might have been in another video, but I recently remembered someone saying that 'Operation Sword' is referred to extensively in Shadow of Fear and then completely dropped afterwards - I did have a bit of a theory as to what it could actually be, based on a couple of other episodes that (don''t by name but) could allude to it:
> Flight 104
The episode centres around a conference intended to devise a way to deal with the Mysterons - Operation Sword could have been the result of that.
> Shadow of Fear
Obtaining close-up images of Mars is described as the 'first step' in the plan - could have been intended to determine landing sites/locate the Mysteron complex.
> Noose of Ice
It's mentioned that a full space fleet is being constructed for a return to Mars - this could be the overall aim of the operation.

The biggest unanswerable question is how come Fireball XL5 & Thunderbird 2 both need a launch ramp when they can take off and land vertically?
Check out Century 21 Tech Talk for the answer!
They are V/STOL vehicles. The Harrier could take off and land vertically but used a runway on land and a ramp on a carrier. It allows a much faster take-off when time is of the essence.

How is it in Captain Scarlet, Mysteron agent Captain Brown manage to blow up the whole maximum security building, but the Mysteron agent Major Grant only manage to blow up one corner of the room to have it's roof collapse all around Blue, Scarlet and Supreme Commander while safe in the protective explosive-proof glass shield in *Point 783*
Colonel White alluded to Captain Brown possibly being a trigger for a larger bomb somewhere in the building. If that is the case, the question should be how did the Mysterons get the "larger bomb" into the Maximum Security building?

Easy, they blew the building up then retrometabolised it with explosives laid in the foundations.

Maybe the door seams are so well designed as to be nearly invisible?
Why weren’t the tank like tracks on the back of the SPV’s never used on screen?
In Captain Scarlet, why does Cloud Base not have any defensive gun mounts? Also, in the _Mercury Falling,_ episode, is the Mercury a nod to Fireball XL5? Certainly looks like an upgraded one.
In UFO, the Interceptors are based in carefully camouflaged underground hangers. So why is the main part of Moonbase out in the open, with no attempt at concealment? And why is the landing pad/launch cradle for the Lunar Module right on top of one of the habitation domes? That doesn't seem safe at all.
Because the Women were dispensable but not the Interceptor pilots
Another question: If the Mysterons tried talking to someone who is hard of hearing, would they try talking louder?
Great Run of Questions! But I have a Question: What happened to Mitch's girlfriend, who appeared in the SUPERCAR episode Crash Landing?
The most important question was the last one, about the Sugar Smacks. Whatever happened to Sugar Smacks and are all the SPECTRUM agents now diabetic?

Were you not around during the Great Sugar Panic? Many cereals suddenly changed their names (without changing anything else) after sugar was declared Evil. Sugar Frosted Flakes became Frosted Flakes, Sugar Pops became Corn Pops, Sugar Crisp became Golden Crisp, etc. Every cereal maker scrambled to purge the word "sugar" from their packaging and marketing, but actually removing the sugar from their products was a step too far. :)

Swimming to the surface might be impossible if Phones and Troy need to decompress. However, I am pretty sure the only TV show that understood how decompression works was Sealab 2020, so probably not.

If you've ever seen footage of a real rocket go out of control, they quite often explode once they have flipped over.

in operation crash dive why is virgil so negitive
I got one, in the launch sequence of Thunderbird 2, at one point where the slide raises upwards you see a pod on the opposite side of where the other pods are. What’s that for?
Also I have an answer for Deadly Whisper, a) it was just a prop lying around, b) it is meant to be a completely different item, just uses the prop
Cocaine. Something had to fund their operations.
OK that would have made Space 1999 a very short series, but it would have been more accurate!
Why are only some of the mysteron agents invincible eg: Captain Scarlet and Captain Black (I think) while others aren't?
Black and Scarlet were the first, after Scarlet survived and betrayed the Mysterons, they realised making indestructible agents wasn’t as good a plan as you’d think.
In the UK we only ever got the first two or three episodes (of any of these) repeated _ad infinitum_
(This is probably answerable by a physicist but I would like to know)
In Thunderbirds, why is there only 1 emergency happening at any given time? Are safety standards that good or are there a lot fewer people on earth?
How does Thunderbird 2 get to its launchpad? The launch sequence shows it taxiing but it has no wheels. Is the launch accompanied by an ungodly screech of metal-on-concrete?
Thunderbird 2 has wheels, you first see them in the opening titles, they're mounted on the underside of the Pod.
Thunderbirds was set 100 years after it's actual production years so you are right it isn't around for another 60 years in 2020.

What was Spectrum’s role before the Zero X mission to Mars with Captain Black aboard? Why was Captain Black on the mission?
Spectrum were the ones who detected the signal in the first place and requested the use of ZX from the World President himself to investigate, sending Captain Black because of his prior experience as Commander of Fireball XL3 (see Captain Scarlet BluRay Spectrum briefing for more info)
Andrew C I have a vague recollection of Captain Black being part of the World Space Patrol and XL3, but it must have been in either TV21 or a Captain Scarlet annual 50 years ago! The Lady Penelope comic had the back story of the Angels.

Why does Marineville have to head underground to avoid attacks when "Battle stations" is announced? In thunderbirds, martian invasion, why do the actors need to be in the cave when the explosion goes off? Wouldn't that be illegal?
Not in the 1960's. No digital tech. Physical matte work and glass paintings, and the Schufftan process. All expensive. I know Thunderbirds is set in about 2065, but it mirrors real life in 1965.
In the 1930's the best way to show characters being shot at, in gangster movies and westerns... Was to actually have someone shoot at the actors, with live ammunition. 1931's 'The Public Enemy' is the best example of this. It's a brilliant movie, too.
