To be clear, Masoero does not endorse the sleeping postures in Tetley's paper. His perspective is that you will roll around when you sleep, so it doesn't matter what posture you set yourself up with. What matters is what you do while you're awake.
I offer lessons in the Initial Alexander Technique, which are conducted one-on-one with a teacher over Zoom. They are designed to help you gain conscious control over how you move your body. Most people have no idea what they’re doing with their body, and as they misuse their body, they end up with discomfort, pain, and other issues that they may not even realize are caused by what they’re doing to themselves. But how do you figure out what you’re doing wrong? And how do you change what you're doing and overcome lifelong habits?
In an Initial Alexander Technique lesson, you will record yourself through Zoom, so you will be able to see and understand what you are doing when you stand, sit, walk, and perform other simple gestures. With the assistance of your teacher, you will come to understand how you are misusing the mechanisms of your body, and you will gain the ability to choose to use yourself in a more sensible way. You can learn how to use your body without pain. You can break free from long held habits. All you need is a system that works.

Huh, turns out my whole life I've been sleeping in the most natural posture for humans and was continuously told I need to sleep on my back to be healthy.

The optimal sleeping position is one where your joints are in their maximum lose packed position. This means the position where the joint has the least amount of tension and the most amount of rest. Also there is no “best”. Because even in your sleep you still want to change positions, because its healthy to keep your body moving a bit. I always say; the best position is the next position.
Lol
Realize how many times most animals get up and stretch and then just get back to the important business of napping (often with a watchful eye at the ready) makes me rethink all of what you have shared here. Thank you!
Yup, laying in the same position all night isn't good, regardless of how aligned it is. Movement is essential to animals.
Im thankfull that neither sand nor insects is any of my concerns when going to sleep.

When I was a child I would always naturally adopt the folded over posture (kneeling on my shins) when I was cold in bed, especially when I had chills/fevers. Occasionally now as an adult I find myself wondering why I had decided that was the most effective way to keep warm, so it’s fascinating to find out that this is a common posture that other people in the world had adopted :-).

It's amazing how our bodies know what is the best way to do things if we stop overthinking everything and simply do what feels right!

I like that I got recommended this at 6:30AM after not being able to sleep because of lower back pain
From a survival standpoint, the recovery position makes the most sense. It makes the neck and belly much less vulnerable than while upright.
This is crazy, I literally followed Tetley’s diagrams but it wasn’t from this medical paper but a random google search as far back as 2014. I found the front faced down with the elbows up in combination with daily stretching really helped my posture
I recently saw on UA-cam a video about beds in Medieval Europe. In those days the beds were much shorter than modern beds, more square shaped. You could not lie down straight in them. People in those days described lying out straight as the "coffin " position and it was considered bad luck. So everybody slept on their sides with their legs tucked up towards their chest. I have been doing this for some months now and I no longer wake up with lower back pain. Sleeping while lying on my back i now know is the worst possible position for my back.
Those are the postures that im always ending up in naturally, in attempt to reduce discomfort while sleeping. Im suffering from chronic pain. Thanks for the video !
Try earthing... There's a movie on here about it. It's helped me to wake up pain free and without stiffness.
My grand parents still sleep in this posture only. In most of the Indian villages people sleep in this postures in normal conditions.

Yes, which one?
I just got a futon that is very firm to sleep on, these postures make a lot of sense. Have been struggling to make a pillow work for me. Will try without tonight. ps I have been having some symptoms of neuropathy in my lower back and legs for months, I quit coffee a few days ago and these symptoms have reduced greatly! Around 70% reduction I would say. Have a great day and thanks again for you excellent video!

my bedroom has never been the most insulated, and in winter my room gets exceptionally cold. i have slept in the folded positions on many occasions. how interesting that it’s utilized like that by other people
1:44 I sleep exactly like this bringing the leg up as far as it goes, but I wonder if the optimal sleeping pattern changes due to a soft surface. Lying on the side feels better when its a harder surface
Holy moly this channel is a gold mine.
In EMT school they tell you to avoid laying people flat on their back while unconscious because they can’t control their own airway…yet that’s how a lot of people sleep!
I've went to these sideway posture variants naturally because I've noticed that sleeping on my back, now older and bulky, caused me to snore.
During a winter camping trip i actually slept exactly like the example at 2:41! It was around -14 F and I was cold even in my sleeping bag, jacket, and snow pants, so i huddled up exactly like that and it felt a lot warmer. Didn't think it was a thing with a name so that's pretty neat!

Even as a baby I turned to lie on my belly in position no. 2 - one leg pulled up, elbow supporting my head. My parents were concerned, because current research suggests babies shouldn't sleep on their belly. But I kept turning and turning, every time, they would put me on my back. So they just let it be. I am 43 now. So I guess my natural instincts didn't kill me. And I still sleep in position no. 2 by instinct.
that explains why the prophet Muhammad peace be upon him suggested to sleep with one elbow supporting the neck and head as demonstrated in 1:41
This is further elaborated in Sunan an-Nasa'i 326.

The conclusion of recovering the vertical natural posture makes total sense. Thank you.
I recently stopped using a pillow altogether, having noticed that i was getting a pinched nerve in my shoulder from side sleeping with a pillow. I could avoid the pinch by using multiple other pillows as support, but of course if i move in the night its all over. I also wanted to eradicate my forward-head syndrome. So i stopped using a pillow altogether and its amazingly so comfortable, in any posture. And it tends to lend itself to these natural postures, too.
I like to sleep without thinking about my posture
very demure very mindful
Excellent topic, throughout my sleeping life i have noticed that, because of culture i think, i tend to sleep most often on my back, but after starting to pay more attention to my body, i also noticed that sleeping to the side, over my right arm using it as a sort of pillow, is quite confortable as well; after extenuating sessions of trainning this helps me a lot when i'm feeling some kind of muscle disconfort or even gastrointestinal pains of some sort. Quitr good to know your body.
The lookout position is the most comfortable for me and I put a pillow between my arm and head. It's the only way that I can get to sleep.
I've been actively avoiding sleeping on my back for years now because that's what causes you to get sleep paralysis.
Sleeping in the right side is sunnah
The most useful piece of information in this video that you should use a stretcher safely or not use one at all. It seems those "primitive" postures (these tribes had as much time as us) are just what a human body does when not using a pillow or a headrest.
In a safe environment, your body tends to move more as you go through the various sleep cycle phases. I believe it is to manage temperature changes and distribute effort, but also to output residual energy, as your body dreams with you.
Don't overthink it, you're going to not move and then move anyway. I'd advise just stretching and contracting your way into comfort like an eepy sleepy cartoon character until your body does not feel like moving anymore.
I definitely going to give it a try, I've been deeling with chronic neck and head pains due to bad sleep... Thanks a lot!!!!
I've had to get creative with pillows & positions over the years, v keep experimenting! 👍
Your channel is excellent, I wanted to give you something that is the root of all the postural and growth problems that are quite censored by medicine, and that is the issue of obstetric violence, the irreversible damage that is caused at birth, which generates irreversible physical, nervous and emotional disorders. I recommend all the books by Michel Odent who explains it well, especially the book "The Baby Is a Mammal", and the book "The Continuum Concept" by Jean Liedloff which is fantastic, the breakdown of the mammalian imprint and colostrum, in labor and birth lies the root of 95 percent of human health problems, and no one talks about it, the system produces it on purpose.
Horse owners who've seen foalng and Dummy Foals should see the connections! 👍😮🐎
My default position is just lay on my stomach, left hand along the body, right hand raised at eye level with head turned towards it, no pillow. I alternate to either side, all I have to do is turn my head and switch out my arm with the opposite one. I'll try this one in the video.
i have had light, unrefreshing sleep all my life, i think i have mild sleep apnoea. i’ve been trying to modify my sleep posture myself and move away from my natural position of stomach sleeping with both my arms extended as a pillow, with some success. but this video has really improved thjnfs for me
tried a version of the recovery posture last night. propped my upper arm and leg onto a cushion which i usually do with my arms i find this prevents me rolling onto my back. i find i can let my jaw relax and get a sense of if a posture will cause me to snore and it’s clear this position allows gravity to keep the airway open.
woke up feeling more refreshed than usual. less of the heavy head and dry throa i’m used to. looking forward to experimenting more with this, thanks (:
I've always generally fine with my sleeping posture, but the in my recent years I've transitioned to a more chest down approach, where I put my pillow under my chest, a little to the side, so that my face doesn't twist too much. The thing that is weird is that this posture simply feels amazing, and I don't get it. I become a little restless on the side sometimes, but when I switch to chest down with the pillow under the chest, it just feel good and relaxing. I'm very confused by my reaction.
I would say if you're going to sleep facing down, having a pillow under the chest would be good to prevent the back from arching and the upper torso from retracting.
Insane. I saw this video yesterday night. I'm having trouble with back pain and I figured - what is there to loose? So I slept in the position of 2:58. I didn't really wake up like new but i felt a lot better! It made enough of a difference that I didn't need ibuprophen to have a normal day.
That's a big gain!
I always sleep on my belly in position similar to this "lookout" position, genetic memory at work
I’ve become aware of how poor my posture is and want to do something about it. Do you offer consultation or a one to one service. I would happily pay to speak and work with someone who knows his stuff like you do. I love your devotion to bringing awareness to the importance of posture, thank you 🙏
Yeah, I give one on one lessons through Zoom. In the lessons you video record yourself through zoom, and that allows you to see what you're doing - which makes a huge difference. You can get more information at my website: it's at the end of the video and in the description/pinned comment (youtube doesn't like links being in comments, otherwise I would just post it here).
In my opinion, i think this dismisses the potential benefits of instinctive sleeping a little too readily, especially considering it has the potential to provide 8 hours of correct posture, breathing, etc, and the profound benefits that could have. More so because it seems likely that humans have been sleeping like this for tens of thousands of years and more, and those societies still doing it don't suffer the same ailments as 'moderns'. Further, i read something about the body responding to the firmness of the floor (or firm mattress) and that 'interaction' having benefits on physiology.
I've been floor sleeping for at least 8 months,, and these sleeping positions come more naturally, and i feel it's actually been helping to correct problems that i had.
Also, just fyi: neither of your links go to Tetley's paper, which, for anybody interested can be found using: Instinctive sleeping and resting postures: an anthropological and zoological approach to treatment of low back and joint pain - (because i don't think YT will allow me to add the link)
I searched for that idea before 3 years or something
Glad to find it on my reccomeded
Amazing. I've always slept in the "primitive" positions, and I was always told these positions were unhealthy. This information feels so validating to me. If these positions are healthy enough for people who live much more natural lives than any of us in the western world, then they are most certainly healthy enough for me. Thank you for sharing this with us 👍
I ran across this article several years ago, very interesting topic to do a video on. Good job.
Best position is on the front with arms by either side of body and shoulder resting on a pillow the way the face is pointed.
I basically sleep in all the postures of the old man and I usually wake up in the same posture I fell asleep in.
Everything you say , makes sense now that I'm aware of it .
Thats how filipinos in province sleep and they sleep simply on the ground, not bed.
but im asking myself if because of sitting too often the better option wouldnt be to let one leg fully lengthened stretching it and the other crossing supportng lower body, im testing it right now
keeping hands together instinctively seems to keep shoulders to narrowed through night opposing the widening (which let you loose winged shoulder blades) and not relaxing neck and shoulder muscles
i think we would like our body to default to the most relaxing posture in sleep, not one most defensive and closed up it will automatically opt to because of blocked vagus nerve and never ending state of chronic stress and inflammation, relaxing before falling to sleep may be a crucial thing
lack of pillow seems interesting, but physiotharapists point out natural curvatures straining body if not supported as well as keeping natural spread of limbs (like with the chinese 4 pillow system) being most ergonomic, plus sleeping on left side as it aligns organs better (also opposite to neck side with aorta)
im not so concerned with insects (luckily not living in southern hell zone ) but about chemicals in bed sheets, going for cotton was a game changer but the cotton can be of unknown origin from GMO and sprayed who knows what...
insight about laying down in a way that closes mouth is great, worth pondering farther, however keeping jar shut doesnt stop mouthbreathing between teeth

The Sunnah is to put one’s right hand under one’s cheek. Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went to bed at night, he would put his hand under his cheek, then say, ‘Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya (O Allah, in Your name I die and I live).’ Then when he woke up he would say, ‘Al-hamdu Lillah alladhi ahyana ba’da ma amatana wa ilayhi al-nushur (Praise be to Allah who has brought us back to life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection).’” (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 6314)

I have always been sleeping with the natural posture at least as far as I can remember, but for years I used to wake up with a stiff neck until I got rid of my pillow and used my hand to support my head while falling asleep, since then no more stiff neck and no more resulting headaches.
I literally can't sleep like that. too much pressure on arms
Probably your body isn't used to it and can't sit in a comfortable neutral position. I don't think you should bother with these if you're sleeping on a mattress anyway. The first step would be sleeping on a firmer surface, like a pad of some sort, and letting your body adjust to that in whatever position (it will probably improve posture on its own). Then you can consider optimisations.
Yeah if you have big arms, they get numb trying to sleep like that.
Then there’s definitely an underlying problem along with sleep posture

My arms would definitely go numb in a lot of these positions. I lie on my side with my arms straight down in front of me or on my back.
I don't know where you heard the ear should be that far forward, that's head-forward posture, bad for the neck. I used to have that and my neck hurt and I fixed it and the pain went away. Doubt it. Sleeping on your elevated skincell soaker isn't the norm everywhere.
Best sleep is to sleep the most comfortable way you can though, that's what I think at least. I slept on the floor a lot growing up, due to being poor lol, but I'm fine. Could say it was because I was young, but even being young I was capable of a sore neck or back, just didn't happen from my normal sleep.

There is no living creature in nature that sleeps on its back! I believe that the current trend of placing babies on their backs to sleep is cruel. I mean, that is what you might do to a tortoise if you want to torment it! It is supposed to reduce the likelihood of cot death - but I know that if I try to sleep on my back, I end up snoring, and sometimes with mucus draining down into my trachea. Breathing is more difficult, not easier...
Fortunately, when my son was born in 1978, it was still considered normal to place a baby on their stomach to sleep. (He also slept on a lambskin, which was a thing back then - since all baby mammals instinctively clutch at fur.)
I was curious about the modern trend, so some months ago I looked up photos of the great apes sleeping - and they too seem to sleep mostly on their sides, in some variant of the positions shown in the video.
Sometimes my dog does, but I think it's more of a coziness or sunbathing thing.
Who knew I've use most these posture interchangeably, just with a small pillow and a blanket😂
Is that Mr. Lahey in the thumbnail?!?
These postures look like they’d cause too much muscle tension
