iPhone 11 Pro Night Mode Astrophotography Camera Test
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 лют 2025
- The new Apple iPhone 11 Pro has a new night mode that lets you do long exposure. I wanted to see how it would compare to a mirrorless camera like the Sony A7RIII and do some Astrophotography tests.
Big thanks to my buddy Stan for helping me on this one, make sure you check him out!

#Apple #iPhone11Pro #NightMode
Just spent the last couple of hours outside with my daughter, that sparked a conversation on galaxies...memories made, thank you!
Let me know if I should do a camera test between the Google Pixel 4 and iPhone 11 Pro.
Armando Ferreira Of course! :) It would be very interesting how the portrait cameras behave in low-light on a tripod. Have you tried astrophotography with the iPhone's portrait camera?
Of course
And pin this comment
This shouldn't even be a question
Don't do it, I'd rather let some unbiased reviewer do it instead
Dev Gid you mean you'd rather watch someone stoke Android so that you can feel good about your purchase 👍🏽. I tell it how it is if Android is better I'll say it just like I've done many years but if Apple is better than I'll say it. Don't care what phone is better just excited that tech has evolved and we have so many choices.
Put the iPhone on a tripod and get up to 28 seconds exposure
Is this just a base feature in the stock app or does this require third party apps?
@@jiddokush8807 base feature, it realises it's on a tripod.
@@kael13 ahhh i see, thank you!
mine said 30 seconds, but yes it's really nice
Nathan Rice can you do this with just the iphone or do I need special lenses?
you have no idea how long i’ve wanted a camera that can capture the stars...
this is the phone. i’m getting it :,)
noo way get the pixel 4 or get the s20
Huaweipsmart+ does it too at 200euros or just the p30lite
A 200$ phone can easily do that
Take Lg V40 or V50. Beast. Stars so good too.
@@blur.b5985 just buy a camera if you want stuff for photography
This was so epic!!! I am loving shooting at night as well... I am looking forward to seeing what the 3rd party developers can do with the camera on their apps... Great video...
The night mode on this phone is crazy good I still can't believe it !
Renata! I couldn't believe it as well.
It’s better than the competition
Actually good but not good as pixel
The Fact Guy true, pixel can take pics of certain constellations and space nebulas such as Orion.
So dope guys!!! Great seeing you both at camp 🤙
Like wise man!
Stan IS the man! What a great comparison! Great video Armando!
Mark Holtze thanks Mark, catching up on UA-cam videos tonight been really busy and been wanting to watch your Helios video so I'll be checking it out soon.
Thanks Brother! Such a rad time with these guys =)
When the iPhone is in a tripod you can open the shutter for up to 29 seconds. You have to adjust it manually. Also I believe there are a few apps now that will let you shoot in RAW such as Halide. This was almost the PERFECT video night mode/ astrophotography test that I've been hoping for bc I really want to see what it can do with its potential maxed.
Chris harper we did manually set it to 28 seconds
@@mondobytes Ahh I missed that detail. Thanks for clarifying. Cant wait to see if there will be any difference with RAW or maybe deep fusion although Im reading deep fusion is more for in-between low light and light images. It seems like the software is compensating to eliminate grain and eating some of the stars as well :/ Maybe iPhone 12 pro will have Astro Deep Fusion mode lol. Still excited to see what I can get on my iPhone pro in JT and Yosemite! Nice review
omg 6:34 is 🙌🏻
You know we were out there the same time as you! =)
Hi Jenna
That was so dope! Stan is for sure the man! So much knowledge!
This is Tech Today you should come with us next time man.
Thanks buddy! =)
This is so exciting to see a Smartphone get good night mode pictures. And of course the Sony did a much better detail, but maybe in the near future we will get phones that can actually compete with DSLR camaras.
We do live in exciting time! 100%
Stan is awesome! He hosted one of the events in NY earlier this year! Breath taking stuff.
Thank you! Looking forward to returning soon.
Dope video.. great way to test this phones camera abilities... I think Stan made some excellent points about the phone... the last set of photos were great. The rock formation makes it look crazy epic.
Thank you!
@@stanmoniz ✊🏼 your welcome
The iPhone 11 looks so much better
So much better than what? It looked pretty ordinary, when zoomed into the image. The mirrorless camera was way ahead in terms of detail and dynamic range.
Better than the a7r3? It looked pretty bad compared..
Nowhere near the A7RIII
@DCD Tell that to him lol I know which picture is superior :D
this guy went from making sick android videos and reviews to talking about cameras that all have the same looking video and fangirling over apple
No kidding!
Yep
This goes to show that people can grow. You seem to be stuck fangirling over android like its 2015
DCD you’re lame.
DCD tell your friends that joke ... funny guy 🙃
Are you guys going to do that same with the IPhone 12 pro max this year? A comparison vid would be awesome.
Impressive Thanks Armando 👍
Nice work!! It’s all about to be minimalist !! The best piece of gear to have is what you can have on you always !
Always!
Minimalist with dongles
I hardly comment on UA-cam videos but this is very interesting. Lot of UA-camrs don’t push night mode to next level. Amazing content. Keep up!
Also night mode algorithm on iPhone captures multiple photos on different lenses and exposure levels (definitely on RAW) and use machine learning to build up the night mode photo in compressed format by extracting features in each RAW photo. So even if iPhone ever allows RAW output for users I doubt it will have night mode then.
Edit: But this is a very positive start on computational photography era on mobile phones.
Keen to see how the Pixel 4's dedicated astrophotography mode goes.
Me to! I think we will do a test against the Pixel.
@@stanmoniz would be very interesting
This iPhone 11 pro max is just amazing!!! I know the competitors say they have had night mode forever, BUT THIS IS AMAZING!!!!!
Awesome video! But I gotta say, the Huawei P30 Pro looks way better than the iPhone at night photography.
We should do a comparison.
@@stanmoniz Most definitely! If youre ever in New Zealand send me a DM @KwasnikPictures on instagram. Would be dope!
True! My friend has the Huawei P30 Pro and it’s really really good
@@alexaandresan226 the new P40 Pro is even better now 😀
Suprisingly good for a phone. Wow
Literally just got back from Joshua tree to take some Astro photos. I wasn’t shooting the Milky Way as much as i was the andromeda galaxy though!
Love Andromeda!
It's on a collision course with the Milky Way tho
I seriously LOVE this vlog format! Such an entertaining vid!!!
Dave Maze thanks dude, it was fun breaking away from the normal studio set stuff.
Armando Ferreira was it 28 seconds of exposure?
fait yup!
Armando Ferreira its super impressive, lets see the deep fusion!
Aloha Dave! Good times with these dudes.
It's getting exciting how great the phones in our pockets are getting at capturing great images and videos
Thanks Jake! Can you imagine just a few year from now. YIKES!
Awesome video Armando. As always! You should do a comparison iPhone 11 Pro Max vs Pixel 4 XL once is out!! 🔥🙌
JC Gonzalez I am! 😉
You guys makes me hungry nice video!
HAHAHAHA!!! Chicken nuggets! YuMMMMMMM
Not sure why Armando keeps talking about raw on iPhone. Computational photography of night mode is supposed to utilize every last bit of dynamic range from the sensor. Also DR is limited by the tiny sensor. What you see on the iPhone is the best you are going to get.
Peng Bian not true, take a picture with default camera app then take one with Lightroom in RAW and the amount of data is night and day.
Ha ha! 😂 It really sounds like he not want to pay for a new phone.
And maybe he dont need a camera anymore😉. ..I think this test seems a bit stupid. ..🤔but maybe 10 years from now almost nobody need an expensive camera ?
Today this Iphone is good for small prints and Instagram.
But I dont look at it as good camera...only a really good phone camera.😊...Still long way to go.
The phone camera is small but capable. Apple software post processes images before its sent to the photos app. There are apps that let you save the image before the post processing happens, and saves it as tiff. It’s not exactly raw but it lets you manipulate the image better than the Apple software can.
Computational photography doesn't just leverage the dynamic range of the sensor, it also increases the technical dynamic range of the camera by combining multiple exposures (though in this case this might be not better than one single long exposure possibly, I guess the iPhone combines 30 1s exposures, but I don't know why). A dng file would be useful, for example a different white balance.
@@jankarlsson5358 Lenses is the biggest issue after sensor size. Just go to the zoo and have fun looking at the small pebbles (oh wait, that's the lions) in your images. Go to a football match and good luck capturing detail on the opposite side of the pitch.
Amazing, THANK YOU!!!
Android does night mode for more than 2 years, new iPhone drops with a nightmode that's easily out-performed by Huawei's, gets all the credit.
Not gonna take anything away from the iPhone. It has a sick camera, and I gotta give it to it, but this right here is just sad and it just keeps on happening.
mehrab hasan Actually Google has a night mode since 2013. It's called HDR+, it's just a faster night mode. The difference between HDR+ off and HDR+ on is huge in low-light. Night Sight could be also called HDR++.
@@Quoutub been using gcam on my Oneplus 6, and I gotta agree....the HDR+ Enhanced really is good.
Ur the night mode isn’t as good? Google night sight for example isn’t even live
@@featel1 I was talking about the Huawei night mode,
. The P30 Pro takes better nightshots than any other phone on night-mode 'without' their nightmode :p
And btw...they way night modes work on phones, they're not supposed to be 'live'. A phone cant show you what it's gonna capture for the next 2-5 seconds in real time. The ones that do, show you an estimated brightness level, which the photo at the end doesn't necessarily always turn out to be.
mehrab hasan night sight came out less than a year ago you dweeb.
Incredible night shots! I’m shook. Is it possible to take the same shots on the iPhone 11. Not the Pro. Same cameras, save for the telephoto lens on the pro, right?
is it possible to apply and set shutter speed for videos on iphone 11 pro?
You should do it with both the iPhone and the pixel 4. Great video!
Doesnt necessary, people know pixel still king in low light
Armando great video. I was in Palm Desert this weekend and drove out to Joshua Tree with my iPhone 11 Pro. With your tips and App suggestions I got some great night shots. I was able to catch 8 shooting stars with my iPhone!
Would love a post processing tutorial for milky ways with stan !!!
Thanks for the idea! =)
I'm wondering if GoPro's actually take better nightshots (with more detail and definition) than the iPhone 11 Pro. I take nightshots with Hero 4 and i think they look better.
Sick!
YEWWWWWWWWW!!!
Do this test again with Deep fusion!
Awesome Vedio !!!
When shooting you should try the app Musemage it allows you to mess with all the manual settings of your phone
i wish you can auto toggle the night mode like you can on androids, sometimes the room just isnt dark enough to activate the mode but not bright enough for a decent picture
How can you set the timer for nightmode up to 30 sec? The most i can do on my iphone is 10 sec 🤔
I think the max we got only because of the crazy wind was 28 seconds. If the phone senses it's stable say on a tripod it will let you do a longer exposure.
In tripod in the night the nightmode is 30 sec!!!!
pics remind me of when i was little & used to take nightsight shots with my ogPixelxL. cool.
Should of done it using the camera+ app where you can control the iso and shutter speed
Amazing camera this phone, i have the max pro and love it to bits,
Great video! that place looks beautiful.
You can have a longer exposure on the iPhone. Just tap on the night mode toggle and slide the slider to max. Once the phone detects it’s on a tripod, it should extend the exposure to 30 seconds. :)
Yup we did 28 seconds
You guys have to do this with the new Sony powerhouse of a phone they announced
Wonder why you didn’t use 30 sec “shutter” speed on iPhone ?
Александр Амбалов we did
Armando Ferreira that’s great
Should do the same with the Huawei Mate 30 Pro...
I'm interested.
been doing this since P20 pro
Wth! I swear i shot that same tree, but from a different angle. I’m looking at my pictures right now and it looks sooo similar. Was it that lil parking area right before Keys View Rd?
Yeah
Stan teach me on astrophotography is the BEST!!!!
Thank you!!!
What mode did you put them in? Also did you use an app?
Does the normal Iphone 11 shoots as equally good nightphotos as the pro version?
Fiukatz yes
No, the normal 11 don’t have midnight mode
If you guys used a tripod with the iPhone 11 you would have gotten options for longer exposure times. The gyroscope inside the phone detects when the phone is on a tripod giving you options for longer exposure times anywhere from 2-30 seconds. I would love to see an update with these exposures
We did use a tripod, all shots were done in 28 seconds
@@mondobytes I appreciate your reply Armando! I must have spaced, because I went back and rewatched and yes you indeed shot with the iPhone mounted on the A7RIII. My apologies! With todays news of the Pixel 4's astrophotography mode, how do you feel of the iPhone 11's night mode capabilities? Do you think it would still be comparable if say a third party app was developed on iOS?
Joseph Hammond the only way to know is to put them against each other 😉
*Pixel 4 wants to know your location*
It would be very interesting how the portrait camera behaves in low-light on a tripod.
Agreed!
It js not good ive done it the pictures come out horrible
Comparing a "back in the day" Android to a new iphone is goofy!
Yeah, Pixel phones have been miles ahead of iPhones for a while now. The next Pixel will once again be the best smartphone camera on the market.
@@JHA854 Not really miles ahead imo.
Also you could say comparing an iPhone to a DSLR is goofy lol But here it is!
The way I take this video is they're using the DSLR as a control for an experiment. Enjoyed the test and comparison. The iPhone did well to me.
The comment about older droid's not being good and isn't worth a comparison to the new iPhone makes me think...... How sheltered is this man! Lol. JK. Kinda not though.
Who knows, they probably agreed to say that to get people all fired up for clicks! Haha.
@@JHA854 from the test the iPhone wins in this category tho
Exactly my thoughts
Vista point? Thats in the coachella valley where I’m from!
works with iphone 11 normal?? without pro max? and without pro?
Can it shoot milkyway timelapse?
Don't think so.
Which tripod did you use?
I remember shooting with LG G4 and getting better night photos than these. Why didn't you at least compare with another flagship Android phone that has manual controls?
tzouzi G4 and V20, 30 sec exposures
You can't take out phone and shoot a bunch of shot quickly if the light is dim now? You have to turn off nightmode each time?
I'm still happy with my pixel 3 x'D, love the video Armando.
Why Couldn’t you get an adapter, connect it to a high power telescope that’s Go to and use night mode to capture galaxy/ Nebula???
Required app camera: NightCap to ProCamera iOS
This guy is still alive :') Damn I missed your voice...
hm i heard you can shoot in RAW with some 3rd party apps, just not with the native camera app (or wide angle) which i guess is necessary for astro.
Stand by for Pixel 4.
I thought the iPhone can go up to 30 seconds exposure if you have it on a tripod? I could be wrong but I think iPhondo did a test and was able to get 30 seconds. I’ll have to go back and rewatch that video to check.
Update: I went back to watch the iPhondo video and he was able to get 30 seconds. Maybe it was darker where he was or he just played with the setting more, I don’t know.
Everything we shot was 30 sec
Armando Ferreira Oh I thought you said in the video that you could only get 5 seconds.
TheJaisah yes because it was windy but we were able to get 30 sec
can do at iphone 7 sir? using neuralCam
If the iPhone 11 can do this the Xr can it too it’s a software modification that only can change this limitation
Huawei P20 and P30 and many newer android phones are capable of clicking milkyway as well
Can iphone 11 do this too?
Is the iphone even in the same league as the pixel 4?
I didn’t know David Spade was a photographer!
Damaru St-Laurent lol 😂
I think he looks more like Steve Zahn.
In the new Samsungs in pro mode you can go up to 10 second exposure, should try it out ;)
There should be more. In my Redmi Note 7 Pro it can shoot at 32s as well.
iPhone can do 30s. Dunno why they say max is 10s
Peand-eL Press the night mode button. Need to have very steady hands or be on a tripod
Can I go with you guys on your next adventure?
Is this the guy from How I met your mother
YESSSSSSSSSS!!!
I didn't know you were friends with Joe Dirt. 😉
HAHAHAHA!!!
Android has come a long way... Now you can shoot 30s at 3200 ISO
Bagadeshkumar R I can shoot the same on ios
@@carlosc.1632 yes, now IOS can also do that but just saying Android got it from third-party developers long time before IOS
Bagadeshkumar R as long as I can take good pictures I’m fine lmao
And lots of android phones are cheaper than Apple, Apple is overpriced
but gets a little awkward at 11:45. Point is, I'm still watching! hah
what application he use it? tell anyone know
@2:45 he IS Marty Mcfly. How has no one else noticed this?
One of my fav videos you have done! When having an interesting foreground in these photos on the mirrorless camera, do you still make sure the stars are in focus?
why this video looks like its filmed in 24fps ?
Were you guys smokin' bowls?
Nah I'm naturally high.
Armando Ferreira my too. I'm just kidding with you. Great vid! I appreciate your work!
HAHAHA!!! Nah thats just normal me =)
@@stanmoniz I'm just razzing you! :-D Great video..
Dude u haven't tried pixels..a year ago though
I have the iPhone 11 Pro Max and I don’t know how to use night mode correctly...
Looks like I took a picture with an Android 😬 I have some learning to do 😂
Well my $200 huawei phone is 100x better than the iphone 11 in astrophotography lmao.
Should have used the pixel 4/4xl. They literally have dedicated astrophotography modes.
Sony a6400 or IPhone 11 pro?
Hi! What’s to program you are using to editing your pictures?
Randy Pozo Lightroom
Why iphone could not do as r3? Megapixel or f?
If iphone wouldn’t get milky way so what dslr cheaper cam will be able to have as r3
If they had the phone on an Tripod and had it STUPID STILL, the night mode goes up to 20 seconds. I’ve done it and I’ve gotten amazing shots in Los Angeles
so no apps huh ... 😩😩
what is your edit image program name ?
Damn that's good
