For you that are new to electronics; is to start out building up some in expensive little electronic kits. I find Velleman brand good. I got a sound to light kit for 5$. It has twenty nine components all the basic through hole parts led, resistor, 4 transistors, a cap, volume control and a microphone, 9volt battery holder. Each part is marked on the little board so it will be hard to get mixed up. I am 72 years old and I found it fun to put together and it works.

That would be neat to see. Ive tried to build that circuit but don't think I wired the cube together right. When i tested the different layers the bottom layer only one led will light up when I use the continuity/diode tester of my muiltimeter. But the other two layers all leds light up. When I had the layers separated they all lit up.

My first real circuit was a 555 timer. I was so happy when I finished it. I would recommend that to anyone starting out with circuits so they can see resistors, capacitors, LED's, possibly tranaistors, and IC's so they can get used to seeing them in schematics.

Note: do not use metal screw drivers on your dashboard. It's an easy way to damage it. Some proper plastic trim removers are better for this task :)

Hey Ben. A good reference is Make Magazine Tool Guide edition. It breaks down tools that you definetely must have, all the way to tools that makes your life easier but you can live without.
Also, dont ever use your teeth to strip wires. Teeth are strongest on vertical force (ie. chewing). When you strip, you applying horizontal force to your teeth and sooner or later will break , even if you do have good oral hygene.

How about using a DIP socket for the chip? The 4000 series chips are very static sensitive, and using a socket also makes replacement easier (which is needed more often than you would think).

Hot glue is fairly easy to pry off most things with a pair of pliers, and in a pinch you can heat it back so it becomes a fluid again.

I am certain that the Aoyue & Hakko is a good iron but what of the tip? The real reason that Weller soldering irons work so well is because of the tips they use. The Weller iron clad tips are the best in my 40 years of electronics experience.BTW, always clean the tip before soldering, then lightly tin the tip with solder. That helps transfer the heat quickly to the work.

Another good way to remove the copper pads from the board is to solder just the tip of one of those component leads you collect (I have been doing this for years now!) on the pad you want to remove. Then you just push the lead and the pad comes right off!

Whatever multimeter you get try and find one that measure A.C. volts in RMS and not Peak voltage. RMS or Root Mean Squared is .707 of Peak voltage. The A.C. voltage out of the wall is 110 VAC RMS. Another tip is to try and find a meter with at least a 20 Mega Ohm input impedance. The higher the better. This means that the Multimeter will not change the electrical properties of the circuit you are testing.

Radio Shack has some very cheap ones. I just recently got a new 40w one from there and it works well. DON'T go for the cheapest one with low wattage. I found this the hard way, it's much harder to solder with an iron that doesn't get hot enough. Just don't expect it to last long, and also, the Radio Shack irons have a different tip size than most irons. Replacement tips will not fit. The plus side is that they're only maybe $20USD so you can just get another if it breaks.

Ben heck could you make a 3 by 3 by 3 LED cube using the 555 timer IC and the 4020 IC. I tried but my 4020 IC keeps getting fried and I and probably some others would like an expert tutorial on it. The 3 by 3 by 3 cube is simple but hard because the 4020 IC is very sensitive so its hard sometimes to not fry it.
