These two matched up to create some of the most beautiful tennis I've ever seen. It was never an even match but James Blake always held his own to whatever extent is possible against a player of such other-worldly skill as Federer was.
See how efficient Federer’s movement is. He’s always balanced and rarely wrong-footed. He had a rough start but quickly gained his exposure, unleashing his all around power. He’s got the most elegant game in tennis, bar none.
This kind of level, the variety in his shots, the technique, the elegence, calmness... All converge in one, making it joyful to watch. But only one community deny this dominance in this year by the concept of weak era. How ridiculous and comedic as they are!!
As entertaining as Federer/Blake matches always were, this was just a bad matchup for Blake. His style of play just doesn’t work against Federer. Federer enjoys playing hard hitters because he can blunt their power with his anticipation, chip returns, slices, and drop shots. Blake can hit the ball harder than Federer, but it doesn’t matter because all he’s doing is wasting energy. Blake was also a very fast player when it came to raw foot speed and changing direction, but Federer’s footwork and overall court positioning was superior. Federer was just way better at managing how much effort he put into rallies. Footwork makes a huge difference in matches like these. The other big difference between them is of course mental. Blake was a streaky player that could catch lightning in a bottle at any given time, or make 4 unforced errors in a row when serving for the set. And Federer was able to capitalize on this weakness many times. I really think a lack of coaching held Blake back from achieving his maximum potential. He only know one speed in tennis and never had an alternative game plan when things weren’t working. The only technical weakness I really see in Blake’s game is his serve, especially his second serve which is very predictable and exploitable.
Blake is a nice guy - I'm surprised he didn't give Federer that point with the forehand return winner (especially considering Fed conceded the point on a similar shot).
Blake started brilliantly, hitting so hard, but RF stayed calm and upped his game, and Blake couldn't keep up - serving errors etc. Exciting stuff, thank you Raz. Love Wushtheel's comment, keep them coming.
I totally agree. Jes Blake is someone extraordinary. Only man who had dominant record over Nadal on hard courts and unluckiest. Should have won more slams.
Blake never was a problem for Federer. Guilhermo Canas was a problem for him, he stopped Federer Sunshine Double in 2007 in indian wells and Miami. Nalbandian too. Lleyton Hewitt befofe Federer got de number 1 rank, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray, Del Potro, Tsonga, Berdych

@@RazOls random Q since I have your attention - I've been debating getting tennis TV since the old tennis forums with all the links to match torrents/downloads are private now. But I'm concerned that I've kind of already seen it all, is there substantially more content on tennisTV than you get from highlights on UA-cam? Like not just full matches, but matches not seen here
@AstroPatel Tough question. TennisTV has a pretty big archive I’d say, but if you’re a devote tennis fan you’ve probably already seen most things that is on TennisTv. There are still torrents etc of old matches out there that is NOT on TennisTV. I guess it kind of depends which players you follow as well. I mean if it’s the current generation, they have replays of pretty much every match they’ve played on the ATP tour. If you’re talking about Fed, Nadal and Djokovic, what you find on TennisTV you’ll likely find on UA-cam as well (not full matches though). I’d rate their archive of replays of 7/10. They have A LOT but lacking many older matches. They have most finals though. TennisTV also have highlights and compilations, although to be fair you’ll these on their UA-cam channel as well.
Unfortunately this style of content has been gaining traction. Basically it gets more views than just a video titled “Federer vs Blake Indian Wells 2006”. That title would be far more honest but the average UA-camr doesn’t find it that interesting. This way it’s sort of a clickbait title. Very sad.
Misleading title. At no point was Federer outclassed. Good contest but not really tested. Couldn't even take a set off of him. Early in the video is cut trying to show dominance by cutting out the ones Federer wins in between. Nice try though.

Hard to believe this was almost 20 years ago
I loved watching James Blake play! So athletic, always gave 100%, hit so hard and beautiful one handed BH! ❤️
Federer so majestic out there.
UNREAL half volley 9:20
He hit another one like that in the Australian Open 2018 final against Cilic.

Poor Blake....he was playing so well, sadly the prime Roger is insanely good.
Sir Roger federer golden legend in universal love you so much miss you so much teniss history best player ❤❤❤

imma simple man. I see a Federer video I click it
haha, Nadal's comment ....

I bet you are an old horse like Federer, time to move on, its Carlos time
must have liked wimbledon 2019 final too
One handed backhand is beautiful. Two players in one match is simply glorious.

@@nasa_fanboy4434 you are true. But very unlucky that he din win single slam.
The difference between these two players are the feet. Blake looks like he's working too hard, whereas Federer's footwork is smooth and effortless.
Wow. This legend has a habit of beating his rivals 6/ zero.
Thanks for sharing this.
Blake and Federer created so beautiful tennis that stays impressive especially these days when we watch so many lamberjacks fighting on courts
I remember this match, James going ape and then folding with the Express hanging in and then commanding, two sides of the coin. Cheers Raz.
I miss the maestro
10:04 unreal forehand
The one at 11.00 was even better
In those days, Federer would often get into a zone where there are no neutral shots, you're just playing defense on every single shot
This match was a battle of the mind. IMO.
Prime Roger is so explosive in his movement.
The Maestro
Could you show how blake beat Nadal in the previous match in the semis never seen it. Would've been better if he'd beat Nadal instead pooper.
Blake was shot out of a canon. He came to play! Fun start.
Federer was never outclassed. He may have been beaten at times, but never outclassed.

Watch the point at the 11' mark... that's just lethal.
James Blake: the streaky player whose main forehand was a 100 mph shot right at the net tape.
