i'm french and i think you are kind of missing the point. You keep calling it a car but as far as the law is concerned, it's a moped. So no driving license required, drivable from age 14, low insurance. In France you see tons of these at high schools, because the parent feel safer than giving kids a 2 wheels moped. To go from a point A to B in a city, there is no better vehicule !
Yes, complaining a quadricycle doesn't do car things so is bad is like complaining your dinner knife doesn't do fork things and is bad or your mouse doesn't do monitor things. *shrugs*
But how many 14-year-olds have 8000 euros? I live in France too, and recently I got stuck behind 10 cars stuck behind one of these on a twisty road. No-one could get past it. Then it got stuck behind a tractor, and it couldn't get past the tractor, so we all had to go at 18 km/h for 5 km until the tractor turned off. Really, these things should be restricted to cities only. But even then that doesn't overcome the problem of the usual terrible Citroën build quality.
25 years driving bikes and scooters in the bloody rain i still thinks this a better option then a car and yes i have a driving lincense. You missed the piont here
Americans when a "car" has no 7 litre v8 with 120 hp and is 8 metres long. It's not made to compete with cars, it's made to compete with scooters, bikes and other inner city ways to come by. In europe you can get a drivers license for this about 2 years before you can drive a full size car. Why it's available in the US is a real question to ask.
I'm test driving one in a few days. Have you had any issues with frost in the winter or heavy rain? I only do local drives but sometimes only once every two weeks so I'd like to know it's well sealed to avoid damp and eventual mould. I don't have a garage to park it in.
It is so popular in france that there is a huge waiting list. And you dont need a driving licence to drive one. Ive had one for two years and I adore it. It plugs into a domestic house socket and is thr cheapest way to travel without pedaling.
You've completely missed the point of this vehicle.... You're supposed to compare it to an electric moped. Unlike the moped you don't get wet in the rain, you don't get cold in winter, you can't fall off it and you're more likely to be seen by other traffic. I have one instead of catching the bus, unlike the bus it always turns up and I always get a seat! Best of all, it costs £4 to fully charge it! It's the perfect vehicle for running around town - just don't go on a road faster than 30mph! It's easily the best worst car I've ever owned 😆
Yup, it's not a car, it's a quadracycle. Comparing it to a Tesla is like comparing a single-engine Cessna to a Gulfstream biz-jet, but pilots love Cessnas. Compare the Ami to a golf cart, a 50cc scooter or an e-bike, and it's brilliant.
I’ve had one of these cars for a year now and yes it’s basic but somehow it’s brought the fun back into driving! Charging is so easy. Just plug it into the mains
It's for grandmas and high schoolers who don't have a license. you don't need one to drive it in France. And for grandmas to go the market, or a teenager to go to school it's good enough. The main problem I see is that it's too expensive for what it is.
Have you checked the prices for cargo bikes and trikes lately? You're looking at 5-8k and possibly even more and they are limited to 25 kmh assisted and no protection from the elements. The Ami for virtually the same price is fully enclosed, will carry another passenger and you have a lot of room surrounding you for shopping or other cargo. And no pedaling required. This is an alternative to a cargo bike for local commuting at a very similar price to a bakfiets long nose type cargo bike. It's a qudracycle, not a car. You have to accept what it is. And what it's not.
Well I’ve had mine a year and done 3500miles in it, but before I bought one I was cycling every day in the pissing rain, so from my viewpoint is the height of luxury. Depends on where your coming from mate
You are testing it with 4% battery. My MG4 would be in limp mode that low. I just looked at a 2 person pedicab with electric assist, almost 15k! You buy cheap, you get cheap. If you’re in a low paid job that’s 10 miles away this would get you there and back every day cheaply. It’s horses for courses.
I think the point of the Ami is being missed by most, here's my take.... I'm a manual worker who for 6 months of the year has to cycle/motorcycle to work. A cheap basic car with no daft unnecessary extras, no road tax,, no driving license, charge it off the mains, park easily, keeps me dry and warm.... Its a no brainer, this car, sorry quadricycle, is not supposed to be direct competition with ev cars. Also, regarding the 10mph top speed, it was probably reduced due to the low battery charge
Looks great, one of the most interesting things car industry has done in decades - rather than the constant oversized, insanely expensive and largely pointless over powered cars the industry chucks out. Basically an Affordable run around, bit more top speed would be good - 40mph probably make it more palatable on many British roads.
Out of spec reviews drove one at the Las Vegas car show that was tuned or "unleashed" for the American market, and did about 45mph and would chirp the tires.
I use this car in cold Sweden, live rural, and drive 15000 km a year. I am very happy with it. It use only 700 watt in 10 km, which is here about 20% of a simular moped using diesel. By far the best in its class!!
Still a lot cheaper than an equivalent Aixam EV here in France and you can get a government grant towards the cost. Unfortunately all sans permis are expensive because you don't need a license to drive one in the EU. If you were born before 1988 you don't even need to take a basic driving course.
Looks like a lot of fun to me and all you need for local journeys. It's low charging rate would be ideal to charge from home solar too. You have criticised this as a car, it is not a car it is a quadricycle, a similar but very different vehicle.
How about Rust ? I have only seen photos of the underneath & it looks thin paint , tack welded , rust trap, So would like to hear a review. ... £8k new ? an old Leaf would be better ... But if it lasts, £500 at 5 years old it might be OK for city folk .
It does have storage on the passager side that's not for ur feet if u look closely there's a luggage sign u prob could fit at least 3 bags of shopping and behind the drivers seat there's a small storage space too.
I'd love to see you give this another go in the summer and maybe look into some cheap mods you think would help it achieve some more of your bottom lines..
Citroen have Clearly Stated the AMI is not a Car. It is an Urban Vehicle for driving around your Town or City. The Glass Roof was a stupid idea. It Greatly increases the Condensation inside the AMI. If the Sun is behind you because of the Glass Roof the Sun is reflected onto your Windscreen. The DNR on the Door was a stupid idea, it should have been on the Dashboard. The UK Government's DFT Classed it as a Light Quadricycle. Another name the call a Quadricycle is SCOOTER. It travels at a Safe Road Speed. BY LAW it Qualifies an an Enclosed Cabin Electric Mobility Scooter. The Tory Government Classed it the same as a Tesla. That allowed them to sell it for more than twice it's actual Price. There is a Back Rest and Seat Cushion you can get for the AMI.
The Citroen AMI could actually be a smart pick if its price tag were more competitive. If it were positioned more affordably, it might appeal to those seeking a simple, economical electric vehicle. A better price could certainly make it a compelling alternative in the growing market of electric urban commuters, offering just the essentials for city driving without the hefty cost. In essence, if Citroen adjusted the AMI's pricing strategy, it could transform from a questionable purchase into a practical choice for budget-conscious buyers. The Citroen AMI really takes audacity to new heights with its pricing. Forking out up to €10,600 in some regions and over €8,000 in others for this little electric buzzbox is almost comedic. You'd expect it to come with the sort of amenities that make you feel like royalty-or at least a tech whiz-not just the basics on wheels. For that kind of money, the market is rife with alternatives that can offer more bang for your buck. Without some serious justification for such a steep price, it seems Citroen might just be testing how much they can squeeze from consumers enamored with the novelty of an electric vehicle. And as for the price in the UK? Who knows, but if it's in line with these figures, it might just be too rich for what is essentially a glorified golf cart.
I’ve got one and it does what it says on tin! So many people admire it. Furthermore in Croydon if you have a large Chelsea’s tractor. Cost a lot more to park.

My thoughts, they're in the AM "mopeds" category (and so, say, motorcycle licence holders who don't have a car licence can also "drive" these).
