"The rich increase the costs of good daily". People love to forget that part. People can work as hard as they can, but some person just decides to raise the price of things or lower your wage/fire you to keep more money that you earn for them. Not because they have to to keep their company afloat, but out of greed. Poor people will never be able to bootstrap their way out of that. And even if you somehow manage it, another person with money or power can just decide you are a criminal and take it all away.
is that how economics works? in reality the price mechanism determines pricing and if no one is willing to pay then no one buys the product and automatically prices will reduce, Inflation isnt done on purpose i dont even think thats how inflation works either. the government supports inflation to a certain extent because slight inflation has major advantages over no inflation at all

Yes and no. In the defense of capitalism you need to add how is ''time'' or money is created. The middle class of today live as kings of centuries ago. People usually think more about wealth difference which is a more emotional reaction. Also the reason why communism was so popular among young individuals who can't understand the risks of the alternative form of production. Of course the solution was a merge of savage capitalism and socialism.
This is a bad example of capitalism, but it portrays communism pretty well. Having a singular top entity that is unchanging, a social caste type system, and an oppressive government that wants to track and control your movements. I find it funny how the movie promotes a communism ideology but in the same time the protagonists are trying to overthrowing a communistic system.
I’m gonna assume from the part where Will gives Raymond his time, that injuries accelerate the time spent. I was actually wondering how that would work, like when will got in that car crash with Sylvia, they should have lost some time due to getting hurt. But exactly how much? Raymond getting shot was enough for him to immediately get down to a few seconds or so. If the accident was fatal, would they have just died instantly?
Actually, no time is the same. But you can die of every other natural cause as well. One guy actually die in the movie even though he still has time in his clock, because the thief shot and killed him.
Price of gas, electricity and whatnot is rising. The rich is paid more the poor is also paid more, but the amount of what everything costs is even higher.
This movie was a bank heist movie added onto The Prince of Life which came out in 1988. Your life is your currency, except people didn't stop aging at 26 and at was illegal to transfer time between relatives. Highly recommend the film.
I never thought about this movie this way, but recently I was thinking about 3 of my teachers, they are in their late 70s, extremely talented and amazing professionals at their jobs, like Ive seen a lot of people in the field that are great and awe inspiring, but no one comes close to them. And I was a little sad thinking that they probably wont have too much time in the profession and life in general. They are well enough off to retire comfortably but they still chose to teach and work. Imagine if people like this could live for as long as they want, potentially forever. Extremely talented and skilled professionals in their fields. Money can give you more time, longer life span, but theres still a limit. The progress and learning we could have if people could live forever.
But if people can live forever there will be very few new people to be taught anything. There is a correlation between longer lifespan species having lower birth rates. If you extend the lifespan to immortality the need to reproduce will drop to a rate just fast enough to replenish those dying due to accident.
We've been doing these, centuries ago. We work for Money, money helps us buy food, and food helps us prolonged our life. The food you eat, can last few days in your body which equate to your time.
0:50 Narrator: “…shows the amount of days they have left…” Me: *“days* left? Maybe for the middle-class, but it’s *years* for the rich. And *hours* for the poor!”
One of my favourite movies of all time back then when I watched it,,the movie was so interesting that it always made me think what if this was actually real if time was the currency how would life be?? It was very symbolic that someday that would be real
Wouldnt prosititutes live forever? Their main source of income is proportionate to their beauty, but since no one goes beyond 25. You could literally have eon aged hot grannies making bank who capitalize on their looks. In this case, it would be people who look good live the longest.
@@Oo-so2jk the beauty standards you are referring to are manufactured. look at any film from 50+ years ago where the heroine falls in a lake, or gets soaked with rain. The wet hair and (washed)lack of makeup make the woman look just as modern as any woman getting soaked or out of a shower today. You take away "style" and you are left with the default foundation of what people enjoy looking at.
The best part about this movie is how Will thought his friend would do better now that he has more time, but he waste his opportunity getting drunk still, and more, due to not having to worry about work.
Like Albus Dumbledore stated in the first book, 'People always choose what's not good for them', ie: immortality and money. Immortality seems like an ambiguous blessing/curse. On the one hand, you won't have to worry about death, but on the other hand, immortality comes with costs either physically or mentally. In Nicholas Phlamel's case, his body still aged though he kept his mind. After so many centuries, his bones became weak enough to break at the slightest touch, meaning he could still die. Mentally, if you somehow found a way to cease aging, you'd still have to find ways to keep yourself busy and not go insane after two centuries. In Gargoyles, Demona and Macbeth suffer survivor's guilt and Demona becomes obsessed with the destruction of the human race. In another series, Immortality feels more like a curse, as every time the MC dies, he is brought back in the same place, and suffers from century-old trauma because he was believed to be insane and tortured for it. He also had to fight a serial killer who's gone through the same thing he did and kills people for sadistic pleasure. While I myself like the idea of not aging/dying, I believe it is best to live a full life with the time you have, than waste it searching for more.
*This is the same thing that we do everyday except we don't have an option to live longer. Our lives is even worse than this. We get paid useless pieces of paper that don't longevitate our lives in the slightest.... We can even make a lot of paper and still die tomorrow. We would never know.*
I remember this short story. I read this small essay around 1980 which was more than 40 years ago. The story was probably written by Lee Falk decades before 1980. What annoys me is that every one that has a similar story concept deny that the original idea didn't flow from that short story. There's always a lot of idea concept stealing in the entertainment industry and it's rather obvious when you look at the time lines of how productions of media material come out. The hypocritical view is that these big companies always cry foul about getting paid for their work, when many times they don't pay or short change the original creators.

The story really took a turn for the worse tho especially with the romance was weirdly executed and didn’t seem to fit If I’m really honest with you. I don’t know I always just felt like they’ve waisted so much potential the movie concept had. I don’t have something against the element of romance in general in this movie, it was just weirdly executed
a good example of why an interesting premise doesn't always equate to a good story. This concept has a lot of potential but the movie has a weird vibe and is mostly boring. The main character and the love interest are both totally pointless and vanilla and the cop guy is much more compelling. A story where he was the main character might've worked better.
Thank you for covering this movie it's one of my favorites I love the concept of the movie that are time is more valuable than any kind of money which is actually true, wonderful recaps
Time as currency is the ultimate checkmate for oppression. In our current society, a person can leave to become a self-sustainer if they want to. They can go on strike or revolt against unfair worling conditions. But if your literal life depends on working one more day, then that's all impossible.

It's a good and accurate methapor of the current state of the world we live in.
I wish they recreate this in VR, once VR advances that much in the future. This will be a perfect second alternate world. You would play the game all day to buy time and be rich, you lose the game if you run out of time and wont be able to play again.

If you just substitute every “time” word in here with “money”, the movie still works (un)surprisingly.

Not true. As shown, they have time storage devices, like the one with "over a million years" that Will & Sylvia stole from Raymond, who kept it in a vault. That's also what they steal from the banks. You just have to remember to add at least 24 hours, plus whatever you intend to spend that day, to your wrist everyday to avoid dying.
This is one of my favorite movies- so underrated! Justin & Amanda did such a great job. I loved their chemistry together. The scene where they race to each other so he can save her with more time- priceless!

this movie is actually so genius to help everyone understand how capitalism works.
Idunno how many comments I had to read to finally get to yours. As in, the point I really wanted more ppl to see. Wild how many missed the mark. Might go to show how conditioned we are, how unequal are the opportunities necessary for thriving, even just in the mind, education. 🤷🏽♀️
This is a whole new meaning to time is money

How are the poor being paid more?
They need to make a second one! This movie was so good I've watched it several times and this recap was awesome
I can't stop watching your videos they are so interesting and fun to watch! Keep up the good work!
This movie was a bank heist movie added onto The Prince of Life which came out in 1988. Your life is your currency, except people didn't stop aging at 26 and at was illegal to transfer time between relatives. Highly recommend the film.
The health system especially the USA.... could easily inspire this story line....
This takes *"time is money"* to a whole new level.
The ending lends itself to being the premise to a tv series. Such a great idea.

look at any film from 50+ years ago where the heroine falls in a lake, or gets soaked with rain. In our current life, this is what we are going through if you look at it under some perspective

12:45 it wasn't unexpected, he decided to chase them insted of recharging his time that was already low
i know this is just a movie but who would even want to live for 10000 years
Like Albus Dumbledore stated in the first book, 'People always choose what's not good for them', ie: immortality and money.
When Will wakes up & looks around for Henry, he looks at the window & you can see Henry wrote the words "Don't waste my time."
*This is the same thing that we do everyday except we don't have an option to live longer. Our lives is even worse than this. We get paid useless pieces of paper that don't longevitate our lives in the slightest.... We can even make a lot of paper and still die tomorrow. We would never know.*
However, in return, those exploited others for wealth cannot use those money to buy their time either. They can't continue their exploitation forever.

The hypocritical view is that these big companies always cry foul about getting paid for their work, when many times they don't pay or short change the original creators.

a good example of why an interesting premise doesn't always equate to a good story. This concept has a lot of potential but the movie has a weird vibe and is mostly boring. The main character and the love interest are both totally pointless and vanilla and the cop guy is much more compelling. A story where he was the main character might've worked better.
Yep. Premises can never be used to measure the quality of a movie. Some of the best series have the stupidest premise but work so well.
