Thank you so much for this! Really! From Wing Chun training I know that low kicks are better than high kicks, but high kicks are cooler. I just want to have fit and healthy body.
Holy crap. As a relatively new tai chi player who had two hip replacements I have been having a hard time with the kicks and saying balanced. Watched this and tried the foot position and amazingly, no pain in the hips or thighs and my balance was like a tree. Thanks so much for this.
So now you're talking about balance and stances that's what's so important in tennis I realize that no matter what your technique is if you don't have balance or no good so now I know that balance is so important not only in tennis in sports but martial arts
Yeah that's this master in Tai chi that I talked to a long time ago he was doing the same movement you are just so soft and flowing it was just unbelievable his blocks and defense system

Wow you're right because to do something slow is more difficult than doing something fast because the momentum makes it easier to do let's say a half moon kick but if I had to do it slow I'd really have to be a professional or really have strong legs or condition legs or flexible legs
I am so glad I found your channel! I started Tai Chi last year (2021) but the lessons are only once a week and now we are in summer break and I’m desperate to keep the momentum going and try to practice as much as I can. Your tectnical explaination is so clear and I ‘m so glad you’re wearing something that we can actually see your movements! Your passion shines through and it makes me want to learn Tai Chi the right way! Please don’t stop because you are truly gifted and passionate and that is rare on UA-cam these days! I think that's a great idea you know conditioning class we all need that especially with the covid-19 going on a lot of us are restricted and quarantined at home so with a video you're able to instruct us the confined people at home with conditioning exercises or something I'm not sure you're the one that's the pro at this
Yeah my tennis coach was talking about that where the difference between the center of the body and a woman and man is different but our balance point is right there where you're talking about that is the center of the of the body balance most critical point in the human body when it comes to tennis and sports because that is the center of
Very detailed and accurate explanation of structure and body mechanics as always. Very easy to understand. You have superb Balance and Grace. Very enjoyable to watch. Bless you Good Woman.😊

That being said great lesson on kicking in TAICHI as well the principals can be used for other martial arts or even ballet Namaste 🙏 and be safe from tigers.
I started using the tips in this video a while back and it has helped my heel kicks so much! It’s very encouraging to know you don’t have to kick above your head to be good at kicking and when I quit trying to kick higher and and started to simply work on kicking properly it made my kicks naturally higher! I really enjoy your videos and want to say thank you so much Shirley for making this kind of stuff available. -Sterling from Texas
I'm so glad this video helped your kicks ❤️🙏 Tai Chi is such an interesting paradox. Once you stop trying to do things "better" and focus on relaxing and aligning instead, the movements get better without effort :)
I love the way you speak. The way you teach. It's as if im listening to music🙂😀😁. Thank you. I subscribe to your channel and I touch the bell for ALL notification. I am just starting tai chi and hard to imitate the cross hand and kick although Im flexible because I practice martial arts from my youth. I learned kara te kung fu do wing chun jiu jitsu kali and now tai chi . Because im already 54 and doc. Willie ong said my spinal is not as strong and recommend that tai chi is the better exercise.
this is my major problem I am totally out of balance in this movement but today I learnt tips from you that I will now do it correctly and not have so much tension THANKS
Right because when I hit my back and antennas my back is straight my knees are bit my butt is down and I hit through it so I have a perfectly straight back hand a back I have my back is straight and my posture is good because that's how if I don't have good balance I don't hit a real solid heavy
Hands down the best technical video on the kick out there. This was exactly what I was looking for. I have the flexibility (and can kick very high when kicking fast) and now I know what to do to get the strength. Thank you so much! If you have an idea of generally how long it would take a dedicated student who is practising daily to get their strength up, I'd be glad to have an idea. Weeks, months, years? :-D
Thank you, I'm so glad you found this helpful ❤️🙏 For the fastest improvement, hold your kicks (with kicking leg as straight as you can) for as long as you can to build up the strength. It's important to also keep your body straight and upright to build up the stabilizing muscles in your core too. Keep doing it and you should see improvements in a few weeks. Good luck!
Yeah it's starting to stretch me out a few inches there's my range of motion is increased a couple inches just by doing that slowly if I did it fast I'd probably be entered
Thank you for that step by step breakdown. I tend to lose my balance when kicking in 24. I know I'm tensing up because I know I may lose my balance. I am going to try practicing as you showed us. I know this will help. Thank you.
I hope these tips help! Once you get the alignment and foot position in the right place, you can relax more into the move and hopefully that will help you with your confidence and improve your balance.
I noticed your knees are slightly bent that's so important in tennis it's almost like all our ground Scopes because that knee bends that flexing of the knees and the end it kind of makes you have a more powerful base and power and everything comes up from the ground force so like a slight bent knee is like a critical thing in tennis it's like if you have front knee is slightly bad it keeps you down so you can get through the stroke
Yeah that's a great idea a conditioning without conditioning really we can't go beyond that what is the fighter that's at a condition or what is a non-conditioned fighter mean to you nothing so conditioning should be what we all need to do before we get involved in whatever art we choose
Thank you for this video. It's so important to see technique like this! 4:27 confirms for me our roots in yoga! One can clearly see why this practice is so healthy and brings such calm. From a purely technical standpoint, I remember how astonished I was when I saw Linda Lin in Yuen Woo-pings Drunken Master, and those high kicks with straight back and perfect posture. Learning that we had masters like her in the US was a revelation.
Thank you for the kind words and for sharing your insights ❤️🙏 I studied under Grandmaster Aiping Cheng in Connecticut. She was on the Zhejiang wushu team both as a team member and then their head coach and she also studied extensively under some really great masters of Yang Style, Chen style and Sun style Tai Chi
@@AipingTaiChi And came with the team in the early 1970's to visit the White House! Auntie Cheng is the kungfu sister of Li Lianjie! (Even brother Li can't do tassel like her:)
Oh boy that feels good I'm starting to feel a lot better than I've ever felt before if I could stretch out my body and get it loose oh what a feeling that would be that's surprising itself
That's why Shadow boxing or Shadow Tai chi is so good because all I have is a mirror I don't have an opponent so I just work on Shadow conditioning Shadow boxing by myself because of the covid-19 I can't get near anybody so this is be something that I'd be interested in because with our low income or inability to work during the covid I'm working but part-time and the weather's so cold and you have the quarantine it's difficult to really make a lot of money until it's summertime but you can't be in small and large groups oh I should just get sick
Thank you! In my many years of teaching, this is probably the biggest struggle for most women getting into this correct structural alignment. There are a lot of factors impacting why women struggle with this so much. I actually made a dedicated video on this topic but the video recording wasn't good so I need to rerecord it. I'll get that up as soon as possible and address each of the factors and how to achieve the positioning effectively. Stay tuned!
@@AipingTaiChi Thank you, it would be so helpful. I think you could even tuck your tailbone too much, causing a strain on your back. I am in awe of how your posture and your back is aligned throughout your tai chi I enjoy your topics a lot so I subscribed to your channel.
Hao! zhe ge shi tai hao le'..zhen le! I train my students to do as much flexibility as they can to improve 'true' range of motion. I agree'... throwing a fast kick out there is sooo different from a slow, controlled , holding at the end of extension taiji kick! And my students find out 'side lateral kick' especially 'slow to hold' is harder than most forward positions. :) duo xie Nin.
The best way I can explain it is if you're a side sleeper, you would tuck your knees in and your back will be flat. In this position, your pelvis is tucked in. It's the position where your back and spine is most relaxed. I'm a side sleeper and I can't sleep with my legs straight. I can only sleep with my legs bent and my pelvis tucked under. This is the same position we want when we're on our feet.
Yeah it's like my return of serve in tennis we we make a 45° angle and I step in sometimes I step in diagonally sometimes I step straight in on my return to serve but that's the same thing you're doing kind of step at a 45° angle
I all way kick to body and the legs got talk in kickboxing just basis not to kick high just use basis but u I learn ing tie chi chan style kung fu love it .
Much harder to do that than me to do it fast anyone could throw their foot up in the air and call it a kick but to do that that is skill now I'm starting to see the light
Yeah I thought you know that when people move really slow that they're not deadly that they're you know they're not that tough of a person but actually and all my years of martial arts the toughest guy ever met was the softest dude he was doing some Tai chi and I had he wouldn't show me any of it and finally I got rough with them and then he said okay I'll show you a few moves and it was very soft and he was able to block my punches and kicks with gentle ease it's just amazed me and I knew that I was outgun big time by somebody who had more knowledge than me is way more dangerous than me but he was very kind and gentle he wasn't dangerous he was able to be a warrior but at the same time had the spirit of a child soft and kind so there's that that spirituality that I learned immediately from the presence of something that is so soft a style that it blew me away that I can see the other people think that soft styles are worthless and I can hear them talking now but they should really reconsider that the soft style is probably
Hard to say without seeing what you're doing. I'm giving an online workshop tomorrow (Saturday 3/18) 1PM - 3PM EST on Improving Balance on One Leg: aipingtaichi.punchpass.com/classes/12898194. If you are able to make it, you can show me and I can try to answer your question
Oh I'm so tight I'm going to have to do a whole bunch of stretching and see that no wonder those kickboxing guys are doing all those stretching exercises before they get out in the rain now I'm starting
So it's smooth and flowing and pretty it's like a beautiful art summer to like artwork or music or something or it's a beautiful dance like the Disco kid would do or something and that's really the essence of how the art started it was originated by a woman who learn from yet man or something and it was a female actually that wasn't that large tall or strong that was the founder of the martial arts that was later taught to Bruce Lee that was passed down a long time to many combatants before Bruce Lee was even born so the art really originated before Bruce Lee came into existence
Rarely do you see anyone who practices Tai Chi kick that high. Why do you need to kick that high? The best targets are down low if you are practicing martial skills. If you are trying to improve balance you can hold your kick before moving on to the next move. Just kick naturally at a height that is comfortable for you.
Yes very true. It has been a while since I made this video so I can't remember but I think I do mention low kicks are more effective than high kicks so there's no need to kick high. But I am a proponent of increasing your range to the most you can. 2 people of equal skill and ability, the advantage will go to the one with greater range so I am always a proponent of increasing your maximum range area because you will be able to do everything within that range so much better.
And the reason tai chi quan kicks are low is because it is hard to control the Qi when kicking. I promise there are some deadly targets above the belt.
My sport is tennis so I try to do a kick and I can't I can only do what I do in Dennis and I'm awake only can do what I'm trying to do and condition to do anything outside that box I'm like a boy that can't swim there is no world outside of my knowledge so when I integrate new knowledge actually expand my universe I'm realizing that it's sort of like enlightenment so to ask me to go outside the box is like a baby in a bubble it's like a 2 year 2 year old who's trying to explore something for the first time
Yeah great tennis player that beat me back on the '80s when I was at my peak was always talking about a string that is attached to the top of his head to the heavens and I played the term it was eliminated by the number one seed the first round for 10,000 bucks I couldn't make it and then he did he made it to like the I think it was the semi-finals and only was talking about is this string that's attached to the top of his head to the heavens I thought the guy was high on some weed out of Sonoma county but now I am questioning that now that you're talking about this string again that's attached to your head that's a marriage that's going to the heavens now that's starting to make some type of connection and earlier connection back in the
Is that a posture I know in Tai chi we talk about postures I don't know what I'm talking about I have nothing I don't know s*** about soft style kung fu or Tai chi for that matter
Don't be discouraged. A low kick is so much more effective than a high kick for practical purposes. If you would like to kick higher, you have to do daily stretching and strengthening, especially core strengthening. Persistent practice over a long period of time. Don't give up, you can do it!
For martial application, I rarely kick above the waist, and usually never above the knee. With wudang arts I can choose to step gently into the partner's knee and pin with harming, unlike having to use fajin against an opponent. The only time I use a shoulder level kick is toe kick to get a sparring partner to rush me, as with Fu style "repulse monkey", or to push them back with a gentle extension of the heel kick to the solar plexus, but that can only be guaranteed if they are already off-balance so that they cannot bring their arms into to grab the leg. Everything above waist-high is gravy, and most can't do that. Keep up the hard work!
Right we don't see that so you see people on the tennis court who have poor balance and then they try to imitate professional tennis players and then they wonder why not one ball goes in all day long it's because exactly what you're saying we have to start from the day one that we have to learn balance otherwise we're not going to be able to play good tennis volley head overheads or anything because the foundation is the balance and if the center of that balance is so critical as we are moving across the tennis court as if that's a dance floor that's waxed
My muscles are so tight from never stretching God it's like a rubber band that has to be slowly stretched out I'm tight so I'm going to have to somehow stretch for the first time
I'm going to have to subscribe to this channel I'll be I'm definitely it's going to take a lot of time and patience for me too learn this but I'm willing to take the next 10 years to try to figure it out so I know it's going to be a slow process and I'm taking my time because I'm not going to rush this because I'm my body at 60 61 years old is not physically capable of doing this really fast it's going to be slow learning in a slow walk to the top of the mountain I'll just have to do it one step at a time I've learned to become patient I had to learn patience that's probably the hardest thing I've ever learned in my life is to relax breathe and be patient I can't do that I've been hyperactive all my life I've never stopped to smell the roses not once I was in too much of a hurry to find out what was at the end of the garden

Yes but most people when they walk cuz we're monkeys were bent over our postures have a s-shaped vertebrae so that the monkey is always leaning forward he doesn't have a back that's straight because our spine is as shaped but I see what you're saying nor for the monkey to be balanced maybe he has to be standing straight up where his knees are bent but his back is straight and his butt is down like sitting in a chair that's kind of where my back hand is in my front knee is slightly bent so if you can imagine me sitting in a chair my front knee back and I transfer that weight from the front of the back foot and I stay down hit through that ball and then at the end my knee kind of barely comes up a couple inches and that's kind of how I hit through the tennis ball my back hand and then if I come up just a little bit with a vertical face on the rack at that replies just a little bit of top spin which gives me that control so what your your style of kicking is similar to my top's been back and it took me 20
Yeah breathing is connected to the movements cuz if we didn't breathe we wouldn't be alive right how about that a model statement like this is my last breath and then I passed away and the only thing we don't know is when we die we don't know the unknown knowledge is to know but when we die we don't know it's kind of a yin yang isn't it or young yen
Never thought about that flexibility and the strength whereas the guy that does it fast he's really just cheating himself the true art and origin of martial arts is probably some soft style that originated in the woods somewhere or something when he was somebody tried to take the guys wallet
AVP no I didn't ./ most in the hands and hips / rigth from the inside/ BTU a . perspective .. that can discern ,. what happening even over time / but us on the inside / we feel like we're pushing out format the ,..ware / / my fault . / I get that / let ,.. getting other peoeple to talk/ yeah for a while / but ,... tomorrow
Oh yeah relaxation and breathing so what you're doing is you're relaxing the back the hips the pelvis the legs yeah because when I learned my beginning kickboxing that s*** you can relax legs are more powerful legs I didn't know what the hell they're talking about relax legs are more powerful and stronger legs no way

This is helpful. My biggest problem is tucking my pelvic under. Is it tucking your tailbone under? or pelvic?
I am in awe of how your posture and your back is aligned throughout your tai chi
I enjoy your topics a lot so I subscribed to your channel.
Fantastic! my kick is better now thank you so much❤❤❤
Hao! zhe ge shi tai hao le'..zhen le!

Thank you for your video but I don’t understand. What does that mean keep my pelvis tucked?
The best way I can explain it is if you're a side sleeper, you would tuck your knees in and your back will be flat. In this position, your pelvis is tucked in. It's the position where your back and spine is most relaxed. I'm a side sleeper and I can't sleep with my legs straight. I can only sleep with my legs bent and my pelvis tucked under. This is the same position we want when we're on our feet.
Your awesome
I see the sink a little bit with your knees sinking and what that does that gets me into my finds my balance point yeah I'm feeling
Yeah it's like my return of serve in tennis we we make a 45° angle and I step in sometimes I step in diagonally sometimes I step straight in on my return to serve but that's the same thing you're doing kind of step at a 45° angle
I all way kick to body and the legs got talk in kickboxing just basis not to kick high just use basis but u
I learn ing tie chi chan style kung fu love it .
To start the supporting feet, is the only thing first. Earn the right to stand on one leg.😮🎉
🙏
I am 30 years old and I can't do this kick, I really would love to learn how to do it as a tai chi student.
God that's tough getting that leg up to that waist where you got it straightened out ow
Much harder to do that than me to do it fast anyone could throw their foot up in the air and call it a kick but to do that that is skill now I'm starting to see the light
How to slap and how do circular round kicks flowing circular kicks how to fight open-handed slapping techniques and how to have flowing circular kicks
💯💯💯💯
When I do the kick in an angle, my hip cracks... why is that? Am I doing something wrong?

This is holistic tai chi, not martial tai chi Quan. They do stuff way differently because it is for a different purpose.
And the reason tai chi quan kicks are low is because it is hard to control the Qi when kicking. I promise there are some deadly targets above the belt.
My sport is tennis so I try to do a kick and I can't I can only do what I do in Dennis and I'm awake only can do what I'm trying to do and condition to do anything outside that box I'm like a boy that can't swim there is no world outside of my knowledge so when I integrate new knowledge actually expand my universe I'm realizing that it's sort of like enlightenment so to ask me to go outside the box is like a baby in a bubble it's like a 2 year 2 year old who's trying to explore something for the first time
The car wreck feels like a car wreck oh God I never thought something could be that difficult
Yeah great tennis player that beat me back on the '80s when I was at my peak was always talking about a string that is attached to the top of his head to the heavens and I played the term it was eliminated by the number one seed the first round for 10,000 bucks I couldn't make it and then he did he made it to like the I think it was the semi-finals and only was talking about is this string that's attached to the top of his head to the heavens I thought the guy was high on some weed out of Sonoma county but now I am questioning that now that you're talking about this string again that's attached to your head that's a marriage that's going to the heavens now that's starting to make some type of connection and earlier connection back in the
What the song at 0:41
It's called 清心音 (Qing Xin Yin)
Wow another what you're connecting the dots their interconnected I never thought about that nowhere somebody disconnected the dots
I guess those are the hinges it's like a door hinge
Is that a posture I know in Tai chi we talk about postures I don't know what I'm talking about I have nothing I don't know s*** about soft style kung fu or Tai chi for that matter
No matter what I do. I can't get my kick higher than my waist line and that's disappointing 🙁
Don't be discouraged. A low kick is so much more effective than a high kick for practical purposes. If you would like to kick higher, you have to do daily stretching and strengthening, especially core strengthening. Persistent practice over a long period of time. Don't give up, you can do it!
@@AipingTaiChi Thanks a lot 🙏
That is hard to do slow like that it's your flexibility and balance that makes you deadly
You are so.elastic maam
🙏❤️

Yes but most people when they walk cuz we're monkeys were bent over our postures have a s-shaped vertebrae so that the monkey is always leaning forward he doesn't have a back that's straight because our spine is as shaped but I see what you're saying nor for the monkey to be balanced maybe he has to be standing straight up where his knees are bent but his back is straight and his butt is down like sitting in a chair that's kind of where my back hand is in my front knee is slightly bent so if you can imagine me sitting in a chair my front knee back and I transfer that weight from the front of the back foot and I stay down hit through that ball and then at the end my knee kind of barely comes up a couple inches and that's kind of how I hit through the tennis ball my back hand and then if I come up just a little bit with a vertical face on the rack at that replies just a little bit of top spin which gives me that control so what your your style of kicking is similar to my top's been back and it took me 20

hey got on the internet / cool as long as they can see is not just me /
Yeah breathing is connected to the movements cuz if we didn't breathe we wouldn't be alive right how about that a model statement like this is my last breath and then I passed away and the only thing we don't know is when we die we don't know the unknown knowledge is to know but when we die we don't know it's kind of a yin yang isn't it or young yen
your taichi is dance
Who's Tai Chi do you think is not dance? Please share a link
My god...the way she talks put my hairs on end
Like chalk on chalkboard? 😬 Sorry!
Never thought about that flexibility and the strength whereas the guy that does it fast he's really just cheating himself the true art and origin of martial arts is probably some soft style that originated in the woods somewhere or something when he was somebody tried to take the guys wallet
