NYC was notified that "Baltimore is Afire" The fire companies rushed to the NY harbor where the SS Baltimore was docked. German Street is now Redwood St. Surviving streets of 1904 can be found between Light and Gay Streets at the east inner harbor. The fire companies from Baltimore could not use the fire mains due to a difference with of the plugs. This error cause the revamping of all fire plugs to become standard measurments so hoses from any place can be used to attach to any plug in the country.

Excellent info. I lived in Baltimore for 15 yrs. I knew about the fire but never researched it. Thank you for the great narration. I'm happy they recovered within a short number of yrs. ✌

So many cities from 1850-1900 burned down and we need to ask why

A LOT of cities "burned" between about 1865---1915--stone & brick don't hold up too well to "fire"-- they all look bombed --like after WW2----- or MAYBE Mrs. Oleary traveled around a lot with her cow !!! Moo

I don't understand the Baltimore fire at all! The Chicago fire I can understand because I heard the city was built of mostly wooded structures. Now, the Baltimore fire buildings look more like stone and brick 🧱 and they don't usually burn that easily or not at all! My friends house was brick that caught fire still have the brick frame but it's gutted out by the fire. If I was a fire research department, I would have thought a bomb 💣 dropped on Baltimore.
