I don't think people realize just how special this is. It's a chore to just get some form of music out of a theremin, never mind *perfect pitch,* vibrato, and volume control, to the point where it sounds almost human.😮 What a performance by this young lady (and the orchestra)!!!😁🎵🎶👍
The 'young lady' was close to 50 at the time of that recording and, yes, she is very beautiful.
indeed!
i dont think so is so young to be called a young lady. Although she looks young in her age.
Dan, calling her a "young lady" makes me think maybe you heard the Theremin when it was invented.
I kill. 😂😂😂
Yes , special, not more.
Wow... I've never heard that degree of control on the Theremin before. Breathtaking performance.
Well Jean Michel Jarre also plays the Theremin and is also perfect. If I am right he made his Theremin himself.
Good time to be alive. We have so many great video performances to enjoy, eh?
Clara Rockmore is another great theremin player.
Estou emocionada. Perfeito!!!
❤❤❤❤😢😢😢😢
Wow!! The theremin sounds like human voice, even complete with vibrato effects. I can't imagine how this instrument is played without strings or keys.
its magic
I heard once that it's the only instrument you can play without actually touching it. I Like that ...
... as for how, it's (basically) done by capacitance. (And that is indeed a tough one to explain~!)
❤❤❤❤😭😭😭😭
It can sound like a lot of things. ua-cam.com/video/faf0XBkBYeQ/v-deo.html is a beautiful performance (by Katice again!) on a 90-year-old one, which to me sounds very like a cello.
Probably 50th time I watch this. This lady is phenomenal!!!
This instrument was invented a hundred years ago. And I just discovered it today. This world is full of surprises. Much of them, like this, are wonderful.
it's in the beach boys song "good vibrations," I believe. (it might be in the Ghostbusters original soundtrack, by Elmer Bernstein, too.)
ce sont les ondes Martenot...
I’m 10 months later then you bro don’t worry but yes it is
Who are the haters that leave negative posts? This is not about whether you, personally, dislike the sound of a theremin. This is about a performance and this woman's skill at the instrument. She plays the theremin with virtuosity and great sensitivity with an orchestra making for a full performance. WELL DONE.
Unhappy and tormented people. Can't find better explanation.
I also don't understand the negative comments and deslikes! Maybe insensitivity ?! Extraordinary performance
@@danstrayer111 I would be a Trump voter if I was in the U.S. an I gave it a thumbs up. You must be a Hillary voter.
Theremin
David Filer, the BBC RADIOPHONIC WORKSHOP gang were doing this sort of music before you were born,I know that because if you WERE born then, well you would have known that is IS proper music like it was done when you were a kid!
Think "Journey into Space" effects in the 1950's,"Doctor Who" theme, through all the series' that was ever made, and countless other tracks..yeah also "Sparky's Magic Piano"...now if you remember all this as a kid, then you shouldn't really criticise this Theramin music...just sayin'!
The original vocalist on the soundtrack was Edda D'ell Orso, still alive at age 87. This is a loving tribute to her and to the beauty of the theremin. Katica gets a masterful tone on this. Very talented and beautiful woman.
Thank you for the information.
I was curious about who the original vocalist is.
I agree. I love harp and theremin music. Katica makes a very difficult instrument look easy, all the while looking beautiful.
And now 88 and still going strong. She gave so much to bringing the magic of Sergio and Ennio’s genius to millions .
The original vocalist of the sound track was EDDA D'ELL ORSO, still alive at the age 87 years. This is a loving tribute to her and to the beauty of the THEREMIN. Katika gets the right note
I'm a black man, I fell in love with Ennio music when I first saw the good The bad and the ugly. Beautiful music, comforting to My soul ❤.
Why should anybody care if youre black, yellow or green?
@@amjan cause it maters, that's why
I have to admit, I’ve never seen such an instrument. This was...magical.
No fame
The only instrument you play without touching it.
Never seen one either, gorgeous I reckon. ;)
@@mareksimon3659 You could also play pan flute without touching it :-) No big problem, just fix the instrument on the stand and blow air into the tube of your choice.
Disney's classics movies and classic cine. Always it was here, but we were very young( childrens)
The theremin is like an opera singer, singing but with a sort of eerie but beautiful voice. And this is the most beautiful theremin music I've ever heard, bravo!
I thought it was called a zither long ago movie with orson wells and Joe cotton big record of third man theme magnificent instrument
@@waterlily6543 That is indeed a zither - and that's one of the classic pieces for it, by Anton Karas. However, I've no idea how you are confusing it with the theremin: the zither is a plucked or strummed string instrument - like a harp layed down (can also be played with little hammers) - whereas the theremin is like no other instrument, played by moving your hands near it in the air. And Katice is one of the few virtuosi on it.
And she is also a violin vortuoso.
And she sings (not IMO always the right material, but oft-times very successfully).
And she tap-dances!
See ua-cam.com/video/0hqi74yLnpc/v-deo.html
I think she may also whistle.
I suppose this one theremin is a good quality one.
Logically we have 2 triodes for oscillators, and 2 to 4 more for Low Amplification amplifications.
wich brings it to 6 triodes max, but i can see many settings on it so it may have 2 triodes more for effects.
Nowadays the same can be done with transistors but nostalgy is a fashion in musical world.
AFAIK the sound is NOT better with Triodes.
@@jeanyves5380 By triodes, I think you mean valves (UK)/tubes (US). [A triode is indeed a valve/tube, but not the only sort.] I'm not going to get into the argument about which is better; however, for the theremin, ua-cam.com/video/faf0XBkBYeQ/v-deo.html is Katice playing a 90-year-old one (which must certainly have valves/tubes), and to me sounds very like a cello.
It's a beautiful, haunting sound. She makes it look easy, but apparently it is not. She is Very Talented!! Love it❤
Probably the best theremin performance ever recorded, incredibly awesome, she plays that elecronic instrument mimicing human voice, i dont think that anyone else would be able to do that better
Unfortunately I can't remember their names off the top of my head but there's two or three good theremin artists out there now.
@@mark-1234 A woman named Claudia did I believe the best of this wonderful music. Don't have her last name. Starts with a C. Look under Once Upon a Time in the West by Claudia. This instrument the lady played was awesome.
she is also a violin virtuoso
@@miku1983 To be so talented. Thanks.
@@marylawson6060 Or Carolina Eyck possibly? Her Ecstasy of Gold Morricone cover is stunning.
Thank you, Ennio Morricone, for writing this beautiful piece of music. Thank you, Katica and the Gyór Philharmonic for recording this splendid performance.
Yes grazie ennio rip
Ennio is one of my all time favorites
By chance are you a Thunderbird class of 1978 and go to Penn State?
The planet Irth will never see the likes of Morricone again. Katica's performance sends chills up my spine.
This young lady has a gift for playing that instrument! Sounds so smooth…yet it produces a unique sound that harmonizes.
This lady was nearly 42 here. But yes, she has phenomenal skill at this instrument (and does other things, see ua-cam.com/video/6Dz9Oi2Keug/v-deo.html!).
The level of physical control required to keep in tune is amazing, and she manages it perfectly - Superb !!!!!!!!!
Probably the best Theremin Performance ever done in human history
How about Clara rockmore and Swan Lake
wow!!... to hit exactly the notes and under a controlled expression? a
theremin is like a wild horse and she made the wild horse dance!! wow
again!! never seen such a clean and accurate performance with such an
unruly instrument!
ua-cam.com/video/DgYVJ_ojuqg/v-deo.html
Well put!🗿
truly. she does it so effortlessly, I don't think people realize how challenging theremins are to play!
My words. I'm an owner of a Theremin and i can't play it 'clean'.
My great great great grandfather was Daniel Boone. My family first came to America in 1620. This music embodies my feelings for my country. Thank you for memory refreshed.
Es muss Liebe sein was Musik in unseren Herzen auslöst. So Herzerwärmend. Dankeschön
A beautiful woman, playing a beautiful instrument!
Klasse Leute
SHE'S GETTING ON A BIT
@@booney1412 and getting better
RIP Ennio! The Theremin fits perfectly to the song.
How did she died?
Haha agree
@@user-Doggo101 She didn't (I assume you are talking about the performer). But the creator of this piece passed away this year, Ennio Morricone. He was a guy, first of all. And he composed this masterpiece. This piece was composed in 1968 for the movie Once Upon a Time in the West. By far the best Western movie ever created.
Fun fact, this piece was covered by various artists, but I'd hoist quite unique cover by Věra Špinarová, where she added lyrics to the song. Retitled "Jednoho dne se vrátíš" (Once You'll Finally Return) she also came to interest by Ennio himself, and Ennio said she made very good rendition to his music. According to him, he didn't understand what were the lyrics about, but he liked it anyway. And so do I. It's a shame she passed away two years ago. I only found her legacy not so long before that...
Yes
The first time I saw the Theremin, I freaked out, really. How is it that an instrument was played like this, with energy? I promise you, it literally scared me.
Aug 17, 2022. 51 years on this planet and never heard of this instrument until today. Huge fan of spaghetti westerns and was watching clips from all of them. I stumbled across this and I have watched it several times. What an amazing accomplishment to the person that invented this angelic machine. Wow and bravo to her performance.

Lovely lady, lovely song, lovely sound. That instrument is a nightmare to play and yet she makes it look easy. Thank you for the tune.
One of the loveliest theremin performances I've ever heard.
Közben a könnyem csordul...
Grandissima. Bravi tutti, comunque, commovente.
This music makes me cry!
June,30 2020!
Thank you katica!
A masterful performance capturing the feeling of the piece perfectly, the likeness to a human voice is chilling. So easy to make a noise on a theremin, so difficult to play so accurately with such emotion. Beautiful.
I'd never seen or heard of a theremin. Was expecting lady to sing ,but was i surprised . It was beautifully played.
I tried playing one a few years ago at our local music store. It was fun making wild sounds but to make music with it would take years of trial and error moments. Katica's playing ability is awesome. She has mastered a very tricky instrument.
@@harbarjor4394 Yes, she's great: Also watch her "Hungarian Dance No 5", her "Cszardas" and her "Bubamara"
Wow...that combination of Ennio and the theremin is perfect

A big thank you to our friends in Hungary for this absolutely beautiful performance, and of course also to the great Ennio Morricone for writing it.
I have never seen a theremin played before nor heard it. Stunning performance!
You are not familiar with the classic TV series Star Trek?
@@rkelsey3341 The original Alexander Courage theme music composed for and used on the original series was not played on a theremin. It was performed by a mixture of instruments with vocals by the late coloratura soprano Loulie Jean Norman to get an "unearthly" sound.

The more I watch and listen, the more amazed I become at this performance. 🌞🌞🌞
It is interesting to hear people clap in unison, over here in the west it just every hand for itself! This is my one of favorite renditions of this song!, simply amazing!
This tune always makes me cry. Voice or theramin it's beautiful.
Indeed, can't get those scenes out of my head either.......
Alex Hamilton played the original recording of this song at my mothers memorial service. I cry every time I hear it, mostly because it’s such a beautiful song also because I miss my mother dearly.
Another box of tissues bite the dust!
Just beautiful.
A Művésznő minden elöadása csodálatos , lenyűgözö!
Sounds like an opera singer, at those high notes. Amazing.
WHOA! This was playing in the background and I just stopped everything, said "whoa" and ran to my computer to see what this was. Gorgeous theremin playing and WHAT an orchestra. Bravo & thank-you!
Együtt sírtam a Theremin-el.
Ezek a hangok szinte már földöntúliak, amikkel Katica ejtett ámulatba.

How can someone dislike such a beautiful Melody?
Simply amazing 👏
Nothing could be more serene and sound like this except, HEAVEN. And "Katica Illenyi" a beautiful woman is fitting for the Goddess of a heavenly escape from this wretched world. Her performance and artistic ability to send you above and beyond is an unforgettable master piece burned into my memory forever. Tears of enjoyment flow down my cheeks. Thank you!
I knew they made sounds that I liked but I never heard a whole song on a theremin before--LOVE IT!
One of the most beautiful songs ever written....and such a beautiful haunting sound of the theremin.
What a pleasure to listen to. Incredible talent and so beautifully orchestrated!
Amazing, Maestro Moriccone. Thank you for timeless and magic music. R.i.P.
I don't know why I am crying 😭😭😭 it's painful yet blissful at the same time. It's hard to believe theremin was invented in 1920s
WOW........this woman is fabulous ! BRAVO !!!
Absolutely delightful, the more she got into her stride the more human it began to sound, hats off to her skill and musical ability.
Incredibly done on a very very difficult instrument to play. She is brilliant.and by the way it had a beautiful sound the masterful way she kept in time with the rest of the orchestra. Bravo !!
I was blown away with such a magnificent performance! The skill of this woman is impeccable. I wouldn’t pay any mind to people’s uneducated opinions, apparently they are insensitive to the beauty of pure melodious music that produces a real calming effect on a person’s being, such people are to be pitied for their lack of inner peace.
Marvelous! Music begins where language ends.
Honoring the memory of Master Ennio Morricone.💫 🎼✨

This stunning sound ..climbs into your soul and stays there... everything about is beautiful...
I've never seen an instrument like this. That's Amazing!

Simple Theremins can be bought in kit form off EBAY and are not terribly expensive. £15 ish. or €. If you are not familiar with assembling electronic components, a local enthusiast, student or a Radio Ham would do it. It's about 1 hour's work or less. The odd thing is that it will sound VERY similar, especially if you play it through the simplest guitar amplifier.
There is plenty of info on UA-cam about building and playing them.
Doubtless ready built simple instruments will be available.
Katica's will be an expensive, elaborate professional instrument with
lots of refinements but the principle is IDENTICAL!
Go for it. You may have an undiscovered talent and could move on to professional instrument.
Wow, she is good. You would almost think it was a human voice, at times. I saw the word "theremin" in the title for the song and immediately figured it would be fitting for the mood of the movie.
this is very beautiful, not to dissimilar to Patricia Janeckova voicing it at 12 years old, both are stunning
Yes, it does sound like a female soprano's voice.
Whatever we are witnessing is a rare and unique talent. How I wish I could even approach this standard. Ady
The beautiful melody spreading by musical instrument and music is melting down my heart into the deep emotion.
Thank for your lovely performance !❤❤❤👍👍👍
