- French folk tune 'Aupres de ma Blonde' prob originates from C17th,Louis XIV and the Franco-Dutch war..the birds are singing and she woud give her imprisoned love the towers of Notre Dame to have him back, by her side she is content
This interpretation makes the song surprisingly touching. Very well done.
Unbelievably lovely.
i love this song - probably only due to it's stunning interpretation. How she manages to adorn and elaborate on a simple melody like this, is a mystery to me.
I agree!!
She decorates it so gorgeously, and it's not overdone. Wow. Classy!!!
Okay be honest ... who came here after Arthur's route in Ikemen Vampire?
Me😂

This song has been included in every other school textbook and has been done to death so many times over the last 100 years that I didn't think it worth a second glance, and then I stumble across this clip. It's lovely. Well done Olivia. You've actually shown us what a great song this in fact is.
For Reals?
Thank you Thugs.
Keep coming here everyday... I guess I'll listen to this wonderful voice 'till I'm really sick of it! Hope it's as late as possible
Back in 1962 at Greatstone road school in Stretford Manchester, our beautiful French teacher, sang this to us, and I instantly fell in love with her.
1960 in my primary school, i learnt this beautiful song, its still bring chill to my spine 58 yrs later
that was in FRENCH SPEAKING mAURITIUS WHICH MAKES THIS MUCH MORE POIGNANT
I can say the same. I heard this music for the first time in 1969 in French class in a public school in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. I didn't forget. I love the sound of french language.
Bravo.
It's well worth hearing the stuff she has done since with Kronos, Offa Rex, BBC radio clips, and of course her two CDs, "The Longest River" and "Shelter". The way she shades notes and adds slight variations is fantastic, and shows complete control of her main instrument, her remarkable voice. Her Indian harmonium playing perfectly complements it. She's no mean guitarist and pianist as well!
I watched this clip first in 2010 and it still continues to amaze me. It is a very special rendition of a well known tune, "Aupres de ma blonde". The slight variance from the original makes this a stunning performance. Olivia Chaney and her extraordinary voice!
Never thought I would see this beautiful haunting Napoleonic French song sung on an Indian harmonium. Bravo!!!! Respect artist!
Elle a tellement une belle voix. Jamais j'aurais pensé qu'une chanson française pourrait sonner si belle...
I will just restate the obvious.... this young lady's voice is so beautiful ! Her talent far eclipses the venue she is singing in. She should be show-cased somewhere worthy of her abilities. Thank you for sharing your gifts here. Our lives are sweeter for it.
Nothing wrong with the venue.
Wow, even if the audio is so crappy, you can tell she has the voice of a mermaid!
I might have said something along these lines before but, of all the musical performances I have ever seen, this is certainly one of the most magnificent.
Thank you for sharing, Olivia.
Picard singing this as he lay dying is probably the most Picard thing ever.
Just love this.
Hello there, i'm English, and head of music at my school, and i have been asked to perform this song
with just 3 weeks notice, i cannot speak a word of french, and if i'm being totally honest i don't actually like the song, but!
when i heard Olivia Chaney sing this song i just absolutely loved it, and now i can sing this song much better, thanks to this.
Well Done Olivia Chaney you have an amazing Voice i very much hope you do more.
Thank You. Kane Stevens!
Such command of song is rare and special
Aupres de ma Blonde - Written in 1704 - great song.
This was sung in an episode of the fantastic BBC series Secret Army by Monique who was part of the evasion line.
The song was composed in 1704 during the reign of Louis XIV. A local tradition attributes the composition to André Joubert du Collet.Auprès de ma blonde is often attributed to André Joubert du Collet, a lieutenant in the Royal Navy during the reign of Louis XIV. Taken prisoner by the Dutch, he is said to have composed the song in 1704, after his release. To thank the king, André Joubert du Collet offered Louis XIV a song that he had composed in captivity as a tribute to his wife, "ma blonde".
Indeed, at the time the song was composed, blonde meant "girlfriend" or "companion". Curiously, this meaning has remained common in Quebec. Therefore, the French used to say "He's going to get married with his blonde" (his fiancée).The song became popular during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and entered the popular repertoire.

It's so good, so good, so good.
By my blonde's side,
How good it is to sleep!

Stunning! I'm a 70 year old Englishman living in Spain. My father taught me to sing this song when he was on Leave during WW2. Unfortunately, I don't know the translation.
GOOGLE WILL TRANSLATE IT FOR YOU
I thank you for your father service 🦖✌️

Heart-felt wonderful and warm rendition of a great French folk song! Thank you for this. Moved me in same way as the Pottelburge interpretation of Courons a la Fete.
Nice Person. Lovely Song. Thank you. Still Listening.

Floors Me, Everytime, ma Chinoise.
In the blighted ignorance of my personal cultural wasteland, I had never heard of Olivia Carey. Now I have heard a voice for the ages.
A Game called Ikemen Vampires send me here and I’m not disappointed
here from ikevamp too ;)
beautiful voice, and a beautiful lady.
John Dos Passos' novel "Three Soldiers" brought me here. Kim Stanley Robinson's novel "New York 2140" brought me to John Dos Passos.
I've never learned to speak french, and didn't look up a description before i wrote this, and the song definatly gives off a powerful impression.
There's longing, but not bittersweet, its a sincire and honest longing for someone important to them. If not love then something close in terms of power. Also towards the end, it radiates contentment, for lack of a better description.
Pięknie śpiewasz i jesteś piękna Oliwio .Brawo!
So nice ;-)!A marvellous interpretation with a Celtic finale ;-) ! The Gauls are Celtic aren't they!?Thank You for the singing with heart and a green gown!May St.Patrick bless You Olivia! From Warsaw with cordial greetings ;-)!

Wow she rocks ! Never hear this traditional French song with a so amazing cover,
Barely not accent, just nice touch congratulation.
J'adore.
This should be made available to iTunes because i have not found a way to download to my phone.
and yes i am still listening, this is the only version of the song that i have found, that makes the lyrics sound there best!!!!
Une voix du ange! Tres belle.

I know this song only from Busman's Honeymoon, a novel by Dorothy L. Sayers from 1936. Lord Peter happily sings it during a murder investigation because he is finally married to the love of his live. My favorite book, and now a favorite song.

@Baccalaureus79 Of course i read ;-)!My question is a rhetorical figure.Olivia is English. She sings an old french song,a military one.Anglo-French conflict is a history. The Celtic notes in her marvellous performance are very symbolic to me-showing the roots of the Brittons and the French-the Celtic ones.
Fantastique! Its awesome
