FIddler Hears REN x CHINCHILLA 1st Time Pro Guitarist Reacts With Friends
@RenMakesMusic
Really hope y’all take the time to listen to our instrumental remake of the song. It made me feel things.
I’m with ya!!
I don't understand how you can not listen to the lyrics when they are what tells the story. I appreciate the musical side but that's a chicken and egg thing surely.
@@margaretnicol3423 she has perfect pitch….the notes are as obvious to her as the words are to you….if you could hear what she hears you’d be distracted too. ❤️
@@michaelgoyettemusic ... but you can have the same notes but different lyrics? Instrument notes or voice notes? This is not a criticism by the way. I'm just trying to understand.
Gave it a listen this morning. Someone had posted it on the Ren sub reddit. It was beautiful. Well done to the both of you.
15:22 sounds like you guys ought to take a listen to his piano only song called Mackay. Speaks volumes with no lyrics.
Ren is miked, he has that tiny one on his collar (it's visible at the beginning when trying the guitar). Chinchilla is not, her voice is taken by his and camera's mike.
Chinchilla wears big costumes, big make-up, big and extravagant hats and long nails as an armour, as she suffers from a terrible stage fright and it helps her to perform as this bigger-than-life persona and cope with all the anxiety. I think it's really powerful and incredible way to deal with the condition - suffering by a stage fright myself and never figuring out really working way around that, I truly appreciate that. It's awesome that she can fulfill her fate and bring that immense talent of hers in fruition despite this often crushing problem.
Thank you both.
I don't think nerves in a performer is a ''condition.'' She's not sick, she's just a bit nervous.
@@jimmycricket7385 Have you ever experienced a really bad stage fright? Mine is literally crippling, it stopped me from performing completely, even in a choir. Far, far, far beyond "a bit nervous". And when Chinchilla says she has "a terrible stage fright", I believe it goes beyond that as well.
Chinchilla is also wearing a microphone. It's hidden in her hairline (which is why when she runs her nails through her hair you hear the scratching). It's a known technique for concealing microphones. (source: a little more than 'trust me bro' - i.e. it was mentioned during an interview I just can't remember which one - whether it was with Chris Liepe or the Fairy Voice Mother a.k.a. Lolli Wren)
I used to use over the top stage antics to combat my stage fright. No one ever knew I was scared….and eventually I was less scared though it never went away completely
@@Ph4n_t0m Great, thank you!
Chinchillas real name is Daisy. She created the persona of Chinchilla to help with all the overwhelming senses from being a performer.
If you and Nikki want a treat, check out Ren and Chinchilla's "How To Be Me (live)". It's even more beautiful than this, vocally. I love this song for its message and emotion.
They each have the ability to convey deep emotion through their voice. Really talented and unique artists.
Yo Mike missed you… I’m sure your collab will be great looking forward to hearing your cover… love you my Canadian brother in music… sorry for our abusive parents here … in our hearts the US is always one with you…glad your friend liked the song… 🫶🏻❤️🫶🏻x
I don’t blame ppl for what government does. Plus we have social safety nets here…we’ll be ok...I’m worried for America.
She really did love the tune….she says it was stuck in her head for weeks. ❤️
@ so glad… it really is special and both of you deserve praise… beautiful!🫶🏻
@michaelgoyettemusic we are worried as well.
Also, just cause I want everyone to know, Chinchilla is super introverted and shy IRL, so she said she does the makeup/hair/nails as her armor. And she makes all her own outfits for videos. Next level. How are Ren and Chinchilla not Grammy winners yet?
Do you listen to Grammy winners? I don’t. I think it’s better this way. Though I wish them every success.
I am just like Nikki with lyrics.🥰 What I have noticed is that people's brains process music differently. Some on visuals, lyrics or, instrumentation. A very few can do them all. It's not really a choice (unless you make a conscious effort). I hear sound. The vocal quality, the emotion in the music. I have heard songs hundreds of times with no idea what the song is about.😅 Until Ren. It still takes me a few listens to process it tho. ❤️
Well said. I am in the same boat more or less.
I've heard that Ren often uses his voice as a cello as part of the music. The lyrics are then worked around this concept
Interesting. I didn’t know that. ❤️
@@michaelgoyettemusic I’ve heard Ren’s a self taught cellist as well as self taught pianist (with idiosyncratic finger placement). I have to dig deeper into his autobiographical and biographical stuff. Anyway, I would not be surprised to hear he uses his voice like a cello part in music although I would love the source myself.
In an interview on The Charismatic Voice, Ren said the he felt the cello is the instrument that sounds most like the human voice, and he regards rap as drumming, rather than singing.
@ right….the cello is closest to the male voice.
@@michaelgoyettemusic today I learned!
Yeah they both have great breath control. I don't know about the imperfections but to my untrained ear it sounded pretty perfect.
Often “not perfect” is “perfect”.
We don’t use the word as a judgement. Perfect in this case refers to mathematically perfect event…..mathematically perfect isn’t always desired.
@michaelgoyettemusic I prefer not perfect, it brings humanity to the song
@ I’m not capable of perfection so my bias may be influenced by that but I tend to agree with you.
Look forward to your cover. ❤
Another reactor pointed out that Chinchilla consistently lagged behind Ren for part of a second the entire song. Like a vocal shadow. And as the song is about being drugged up with medication, this was really appropriate to the theme. They sing about losing connection to themselves and their own bodies, disappearing in floating chalk outlines (put round the dead by police). I’m not proficient enough to notice the lag. Both Ren and Chinchilla are incredibly technically talented singers, spending long times singing and performing during childhood/teen years then polishing their voices in tertiary music courses. (Ren’s illness interfered badly but he managed to graduate with a B.A.) I know he is incredibly intentional about his performances, so I think the chances are high that they intended Chinchilla’s lag.
Super looking forward to Nikki and your instrumental cover, going there now 😀
I think chinchilla sings behind the beat which is common in R&B music. Beyoncé drags it way back for example….I also do that….it was what everyone wanted in the 90s….now everything is on a grid…..that wouldn’t invalidate the reactors point which is valid. I’m sure she could sing on the beat if she wanted to but I think she likes that back pocket. Enjoy the cover! ❤️
Oh yeah, you can mention other channels by name. It’s fine with me.
Agree completely, it's perfectly-imperfect. ❤ Thank you both for a lovely discussion about music with character and spirit.
I totally get what she means when she says when she listens sometimes the lyrics like arent even there. I grew up on alot of metalcore and i can sing all of it but couldnt tell ya what almost all of it means i just liked the way it sounded. But ren has changed alot of that for me. Ren and nf
I used to love Beck and you could write Beck lyrics with a random word generator. 😂
Yo Mike. Looking forward to your cover with Nikki. 💚
I love this idea!! 🪀
That was interesting, can’t imagine not hearing lyrics in songs, never heard of that before 😊
I can’t imagine not hearing the music….many of my favorite songs make no sense lyrically….but they use words that suit the mood of the music. I don’t hear the lyrics well enough to make out a storyline unless I’m specifically trying to, but then I miss out on all the cool musical stuff.
@michaelgoyettemusic 💯. Same.
I understand it’s weird. I too think it’s weird that I know entire songs by heart, but I couldn’t tell you what they are about. I only realized this about a year ago and I’m 50 yo!
It’s different for most of Ren’s songs, but not all of them.
I agree about the propensity for people, particularly rappers, to focus on the lyrics. That takes away from the actual music. I think my generation listened to the music first and learned the lyrics over a few plays.
Ive had hearing aids since i was 40, had to put up with very bad hearing all my life before then. I read the lyrics on the info provided with the vinyl L P cover in the 60/70s. Really missed that with the advent of CDs.
Absolutely….lyrically I just need some cool words to pop out now and then….I would rather hear the vibe the first time through then dig into the message.
Sorry about your hearing loss. Today’s hearing aid are much better than previous generations though from what I’ve heard…..no pun intended. ;). ✌️
I love that this song retains its emotional message even after we take away the lyrics. The cover we did feels very true to the original.
looking forward to the cover
Yo, her nails are her armour to gain protection for performance.
Well put!!
Singers get to have crazy nails and it doesn’t affect their performance lol. Having played the violin starting at 5 years old I’ve never had long nails so I have a weird reaction to long nails. I like her aesthetic - I might just be envious of her ability to wear long nails. 😂
Thanks for your response, I especially like the comparisons of normal sound, i.e. uncompressed nuanced vs auto tune and AI. But what about your audio sound? The ends of words often seem to be cut off. Is this perhaps due to a noise gate? Unfortunately, this spoils the listening experience somewhat.
It was a noise gate…I don’t have a Time Machine unfortunately.
I need to sit closer to the mic. 😂
@ yeah but it was more so the noise gate.
I've been a fiddler since puberty.
My intrusive thoughts win again.
I’m not sure intrusive thoughts and fiddle have to do with one another 🤔
@michaelgoyettemusic oh haha. I didn't realize how many thoughts were in between those two statements until you said that. "I've been a fiddler..." was the intrusive thought. The part of me that said "no no, that's out of pocket(pun intended) don't post that" did not prevail, hence, "intrusive thoughts win again" lol
@ 😂 good one!!
Are you a pro fiddler?
@michaelgoyettemusic yes but I fiddle left handed 😉😂🤣
@ I’ve never seen that before.
So it’s all in a hallway, live, no mics. Ren found the perfect acoustic location for this (as he always does). The white clothes are indicative of the white sweats people wear in mental health or rehab facilities. The emptiness of the sound with just a voice and a guitar in an echo-y hallway is symbolic of the struggle that is mental health. Sometimes they’re singing alone, but when the song picks up, they’re singing together and using the hallway as an acoustic punch.
Ren has a lapel mic under his shirt
Guys after watching this reaction please go listen to Michael's and Nikkis retake. It's really good, you won't regret it!
This comment should be pinned. 😊
There is only one mic, Ren lavalier under his right ear.. If you listen carefully they turn the gain up (more noise) when Chinchilla starts quietly.. Watch her carefully, she does an masterful job at modulating her levels by using direction and distance.
Really? Wow….I would’ve set up 2 or one in the middle but the results speak for themselves. ✌️
Chinchilla is wearing one, too. It's why you hear her nails and earrings when she runs a hand through her hair.
@@MissMeKatewas just about to say this 🙂
@@InfraRed0Yeah it's a bit more hidden because of her hair, but it's there. 😊
@ I based my comment on an interview I saw of Ren discussing this video. A lot of talk about the mic since it was a new, high quality mic than he used in previous videos. He also talked about the efforts in post production, reducing noise and leveling everything. .Say what you want, you must be right because this is your reality and you are always right....
I’ve missed mikes videos so much!
❤️
I guess a fiddler would not be too keen on long nails!😀 I like what you’re doing, Mike! Sure do like this song, too. Waiting patiently for some new drops by Ren, as he says they will be more musical than in his sick boi album. Waiting…
That has something to do with it….guitarists are in the same boat. 😂
I can’t wait for the new stuff either!!
You stumbled upon the Easter Egg in this song by accident. The “world’s loudest chair” as you call it was done on purpose as a nod to a psychological condition called Cherophobia or the fear of being ok or happy.
You’re gonna have to explain that like I’m a child. How is that a nod to that condition?
@ the lyrics in the song talk about it specifically “It’s such a perfect day. It’s a beautiful shame, it’s a beautiful shame. I’m scared of being ok. ‘Cause all things change, all things change.
@@caseace79 I know that…what does that have to do with a squeaky chair?
@@michaelgoyettemusic well ya did say explain it like you were a child so I was just making sure. 😂 it’s a play on words. Cherophobia is pronounced Chair-o-phobia.
'lo fiddlin' =)
just came across your channel ... yes because of Ren. Just a little advice from a 30+ year sound professional ... maybe drop some of the compression from your vocal mics ... they are really hard to listen to ... a little better after 9 min
It took me a couple weeks to get the settings right…..I’m in a music school so I need noise gates….the threshold was set too high. We shot this a month ago….everything has since been fixed. ✌️
❤
The mics are under the shirt collar
🔥
Nice one. I get the music vs lyrics bit, being autistic. I tend to concentrate on whatever I need to concentrate on. If it's guitar then that's all I hear. If it's rhythm, then that's all I hear. Lyrics, then that's all I hear. I also have 'song' mode where I listen to the overall effect, production, etc. Being purely an instrumentalist, I'd be listening to the melody first too. I love lyrics though. They're just as important to me, so my ears will tend to pick those up too. The autistic megafocus comes in handy 🙂
probably boom mics or hidden lavs
Yo ❤✌
Yo
Please have do another with her checking out Ren/Chinchilla -Sexual Healing -Live busking.
Looking forward to this cover.
Is your mic OK, Mike? Perhaps it is my dodgy hearing, but it seems to be dropping in and out and missing words in each sentence. Niikki's one was much smoother. Ed to add, scrap that; Nikki's also went in and out at times when she spoke with more animation.
Not just regulations in your own country. Unfortunately, it needs to be worldwide. Good luck with that, getting the world to agree on something. Pandora's Box is open; too late now.
Current British Prime Minister is toying with bringing in legislation to legalize AI using anything it wants from the internet. Go and check out what Fil on Wings of Pegasus had to say about it.
I explained it briefly in the video, there’s a noise gate and I had the threshold set too high. I’ve since fixed it.
Was trying not to say anything, but... First, hate reactions where a reactor is introducing someone else to a new piece of music, and the reactor doesn't allow the new person to experience the music as she wants to. If she wants to pause, she should do it herself. The reactor should not be intruding, especially with grotesquely long pauses that completely interrupt the flow of the music, the experience. Also, if the reactor dares to explain something about an artist, he should fully understand the situation before doing so, e.g., Chinchilla is shy; the nails are, like a hat, clothing, accessories, even a mask, e.g., merely a tool she uses to "empower" herself, to perhaps give one the sense of a more confident persona. They are not because she thinks they give her "powers."
I love you too.
It's not ai
What’s not Ai?
All the old bands are getting remastered and it is all AI doing the remastering so it all sounds the same. I just heard they are remastering Queen the same way. 🙄 Also what is scary is so many concerts, especially the big ones are lip syncing. Why pay big bucks to hear the album playing through a huge sound systems and only the singers lips are moving. Also the the AI auto tune, pitch correction can be done in live real time nowadays. A few guitarist/musicians I watch just called out Don Henley for lip synching at his last concert. He proved it along with Taylor Swift and so many more. Don Henley was threatening him but youtube kept his videos up because he didn't do anything wrong but call out the truth.
Phil is the ball buster!! That dude is awesome.
@ Yes, "Wings of Pegasus" is how I know him. My husband mainly watches him but I definitely join in now and then. The amount of stuff he tests out and praises is amazing considering he sells his own brand. That is an amazing tight rope walk he does...respect. Great video and can't wait to see the final product.
@@kellyt5341 I got attacked for accusing Aurora of using pitch correction a while back so I borrowed Phil’s analysis method to prove my point….it felt good proving the haters wrong!!
@@michaelgoyettemusic Vindicated..💯😊. Ren doesn't care and leaves all his imperfections in the live takes. There are a few songs he uses some kind of adjustment on his voice but it gives him a sound he was going for in the tone/flavor of the song. He doesn't hide when he uses it, it's actually kind of obvious. I'm not a musician (not even close) so I probably don't use the terminology correctly but I'm sure you know what I mean.
@@kellyt5341 Aurora is kinda like that too…I only mentioned she was being pitch corrected that time because she usually isn’t. Her producer kept lying and saying it wasn’t corrected so I had to prove it!!! Ren doesn’t lie about it when he uses it. ❤️
Something wrong with your sound - do you have a noise gate on? If so the settings are off!! Affecting both your voices. Video is fine ….
I must make a comment that it’s kind of weird that someone wearing a witches hat does not like chinchillas nails. Also, I would like to say that I’m surprised by how many people especially musicians are actually distracted by the artistry because of her nails I would say it’s over 50% of reactor have to stop it almost right away and say something to the point where it gets crazy the tangent that they go on about personal hygiene and everything else it’s actually Kind of startling how big appearance, especially first impressions are!
So, I have a visceral reaction to nails because I have a weird childhood trauma about nails - and being a violinist means I can never have them long so I’ve had to always be conscious of them. So it’s just me. Otherwise I love her aesthetic. And his. I should’ve clarified my reaction to her nails has a lot to do with my own issues. They’re both very talented.
Also - that’s a cowboy hat. Does it really look like a witches hat?? lol. I guess it does a bit, huh.
So how is your comment about Nikki any different from her comment about Chinchilla?
Also, those aren’t just long nails….those are the LONGEST nails…..Rens haircut isn’t the hardest fade cut ever….it’s a normal haircut millions of ppl have. Why mention it? (Although I have personally mentioned I don’t like his hard fade haircut before.)
These are finger nails, not permanent body parts…no one is getting body shamed here so let’s dial back the accusations.
Lastly, I have spoken to Chinchilla a couple times and she shows no sign of being bothered by what ppl think of her nails who otherwise love her work. There was nothing disrespectful about what Nikki said, however calling her hat a witch hat without saying anything nice to balance it is kinda nasty. I’m sure you’re a well meaning person but you gotta admit that was needlessly personal.
@ well I watch a lot of your videos and I enjoy your channel. It was just ironic I was just talking to someone the previous day about this song and how many people actually get caught up with their fingernails and it’s not even like it’s just a side comment it actually distracts them and they have to stop and say something. I mean the fingernails don’t bother me in the hat doesn’t bother me. It was just an observation really. I mean, I’m sure chinchilla knows this, and that could even be part of her reason for doing it. And I wasn’t insinuating. It was body shaming. I’m just surprised how distracted that other musicians are by it. She’s a super talented person and it’s unfortunate that something as insignificant as fingernails can impact someone’s interpretation of her music. But anyway, I look forward to listening to the cover of the song that the two of you do and I appreciate you taking the time to respond.
@@nikkib9383 I enjoyed the reaction and I appreciate your response. I wasn’t trying to degrade you or the reaction. I am just surprised by all of the actors that are distracted by her fingernails. It’s really a manifestation of multiple people and this is the first time I’ve actually commented on it and I love the channel so I don’t want to come across as putting you down by any means. I look forward to listening to the cover that you both do as talented musicians in your own, right!
