Im glad people like you educate people on other prehistoric creatures other than just dinosaurs
Because kids most definitely will not learn about this sort of awesomeness in school. It's more important these days to teach liberal arts, cinema study, & gender fluidity in this PC tainted common core hell, we call education...
@@fobbitoperator3620 i wouldnt say that cinema falls in the PC category but ok
its amazing how many extinction events had to occur just for us to be here today. Seems like random chance to be sometimes. If it wasnt for the Gorgons and other animals dying out during that time period, the dinosaurs may not have existed either.
Also amazing how the Gorgons (with fur) resemble saber tooth cats, tigers, lions, hyenas and even dogs. I guess in a way species eventually evolve in similar ways.
yep and that's why paleontologists dislike bible thumpers cause they'll throw a brick through your car windshield and call it an act of god because you described how science works and then they got mad cause most bible thumpers can't accept that both happened jesus was a real man his presence was known in history but the countless extinct creatures that used to roam earth are gone like bro I'd love to a woolly rhino or a carnotuars in person even if it meant being eaten jp3 style it'd still be dope or even therizinosuars point being it's all history some things may have been exaggerated in history like jesus being able to heal people by touch and walking on water I mean he might've given people medicine and built boats but also people think we do a lot of psychedelic's today they were breathing it that stuff back then oh and weed did originate from the middle east so just saying that I theorize that the catholic/Islamic/Christian faiths are all based on fat dudes tripping mad cow balls in the desert like come on the burning bush god appearing before the dude bet he really he just ran into another shepherd and thought his torch was a bush and that the dude was god it's happened before addicts and junkies see god all the time you know the bright light at the end of the tunnel or any source of light like eh tbh I don't like Christians or Catholics but I'm actually chill with Islamic people they may not like you to much because of a few different things but at least they don't quote bits and piece from the worlds best science fiction book and also islams may not be chill with gay people but again they let you know and usually that's it but a christian will try and argue that being gay is wrong where as the catholic will either engage in a fist fight or try and drag them to church either way it's gonna be a fuck no and me calling the cops cause christian and catholics are rarely in any shape to do well anything like ok whens the last time a christian or a catholic did anything that was productive and it wasn't for god tldr never trust the christians or catholics watch a sci fi movie they're always the first doomsday cult usually sacrificing live people too and no way is it not gonna happen that way
Good comment! I’m reading Peter D. Ward’s book Gorgon, right now! Very well written.
It's so insane when you take a look at what happened at the end of the Permian. This is, as far as I can tell, the only topic on which you get to read the word "apocalyptic" in the scientific literature. So for example, during the end-Permian, there is something called the "Equatorial Vertebrate Eclipse", during which virtually all vertebrates (marine & terrestrial) disappear from the tropics and subtropics. There is even an interval at the Permian-Triassic boundary where all evidence of forests disappears and the world seems to mostly be ruled by ferns and fungi again.
Wow, I was not aware of that level of destruction. I knew it was bad, but that does sound truly apocalyptic.
Yeah, it's astounding what raising the temperature of the Earth by almost 10 degrees can do. As I imagine you know, when there's massive die offs of seed plants, ferns move into to fill the void with their easily spreadable spores. The Earth was almost sterilized, especially in the oceans.
Except for the temperatures around that time were 15+ degrees warmer when the temp spike occurred, and that CO2 (which was nearly 3000-4000ppm) was violently stripped from the air. A lot of the scientific literature points to the deaths of the forests due mainly to this ripping out of the CO2. Which is thought to have occurred in the Arctic when a particular bacteria went into overdrive and just sucked in the CO2 in masse.
Fun fact the only other time CO2 has got that low is in modern times, and we can see the same effect over the last 10-20 million years with forests shrinking from the poles and moving towards the tropics, and deserts expanding.

Apparently things got so bad that rivers flowed in the same way they flowed in the Ordovician (big, straight, braided streams), because there were literally not enough plants left to support the formation of riverbanks. And note that this was around rivers, where conditions aren't as hostile as in more arid areas!
Gorgonopsids have always looked so breathtaking to me. Something about their rather rectangular faces and large jaws is really aesthetically pleasing to me! I would have loved to see them in real life, from a distance of course.
I agree, they don’t even look real. They look like they belong in some fantasy story, it’s really amazing to see that such wonderful and fantastic-looking creatures truly existed!
Normie: Mammal-Like Reptile
Me an intelectual: Reptile-Like Mammal
You know how waxwork dummies look creepy to humans because they look like us but aren't us? Gorgonopsids are like that to mammals.
Two different things. A reptile-like mammal would feed its young with milk but a mammal-like reptile would not. Both of these groups existed.
@@deathproofduck6897 "mammal like reptiles" are animals that are constantly called an outdated term.
the terms you SHOULD use are "stem mammals", "proto mammals", or "paramammals"
Teacher: Why are you laughing?
Me: Nothing
Also me: Gorgon Ramsy
Instead of him getting angry and cursing at others, he eats them for getting the food wrong.
Primeval (2007) introduced me to this creature. I miss that show especially the Gorgonospid vs the Future Predator.
That's how I was introduced to these animals too :) Primeval was awesome!
Regardless of how much hair they had, Gorgonopsids likely did not possess scales. When know from other proto-mammals that Gorgons probably had scale-less, gland filled skin similar to later mammals.
Leathery skin like an elephant or more like a rhino's sensitive hide?
Fur would be going a bit far imo. We don't know exactly when the synapsid acquired this trait, and there's much more evidence for non-fur than fur.
Also note that since we now know from study of embryonic development and genetics that fur, scales and feathers are all modifications of the same structure during development meaning having one precludes the other two on the part of the body.
@Jakjak Oh yeah you can have both just not at the same place as they develop from the same embryonic structure that was what I had meant sorry for the confusion

AND MEDUSA AS THEIR QUEEN!
wait.....wrong gorgons
It remind me of Small Soldier movie , in which the main character are called Gorgonite also look like a Gorgons.
The Permian has always fascinated me. The creatures were so different but so well adapted to their environment. Thank you for posting. Just subscribed, btw...👍

Great video thanks. Thanks to UA-cam I am getting back into my childhood obsession with space, rockers and paleontology! :)
Their accurate names still has the word mammal in it, so it still technically means that mammals ruled the Earth before and after the age of dinosaurs.
This is true. The dinosaurs were an evolutionary fluke brought on by a renegade plate tectonic event that'll likely never happen again.
@@smartacus88 All of life as we know is a fluke if you really want to see it that way.
Excellently informative video! I was first made aware of this family of animals from Primeval back in 2007, and I was very glad they introduced such an interesting creature. The species featured in the show was most likely the larger Inostrancevia!
Thank you! And that's exactly how I first learned of these animals too, I was a huge fan of Primeval! I love looking through the clips on your channel to remind myself of what an awesome show it is :D
That's great and I appreciate that a lot! It's the Anniversary on the 10th February so I hope so have some special content ready for that day ready! I hope you enjoy it!
And keep up the good work with these information videos, they're a great and accessible way for people to learn about prehistory!
Thank you so much, and I will certainly keep a look out for the anniversary content :D
I learned about the theraspids and other stem-mammals in an Advanced Vertebrate Natural History course when I was at MIT back in the late '70's. The Great Dying has always held me in morbid fascination...
Thank you for saying "sabertoothed cat" instead of "sabertoothed tiger". :)
Although tigers are a type of cat, the sabretoothed cats are not tigers at all, they're in a completely different group to them. Within felids (the cat group), sabre-toothed cats are in the group Machairodontinae, whereas tigers are in the group Pantherinae. I'm not sure why it became popular to call them sabre-toothed tigers, but it's incorrect to do so.
sabertoothed tiger sabertoothed tiger sabertoothed tiger sabertoothed tiger sabertoothed tiger sabertoothed tiger
If you know what the word Tiger meant you'd see it applies to all cats pretty well.
Thanks for presenting a much underrated period. There is so much concentration on dinosaurs to the exclusion of almost everything else. I had not heard about possible hair before.
I want one as pet so it can guard my house.
If anybody breaks into your house than ooo boy are they in for one helluva surprise.
I just want to to know that your videos helped me realize my passion for Paleontology, and I am now working towards my undergrads with an intention to head into Paleoecology, focusing on therapsid evolution from the Carboniferous to the later Permian. But that's just the current trajectory. Regardless, thank you so much.
Odogaron was based on these guys
DarkZholt you have no idea how long it took for me to find out what Odogaron was Based off of.
Hail Hydra lol it tooked me less than a second. Also, gorgonopsian probably didn't had scale, but rather skin like us

Amniota Synapsida Therapsida Gorgonopsia
I have a Gorgonopsid great x1000000000000000 great uncle
I don't think you're that far removed. With an average generation span (for all our ancestral species) of, say, 5 years - that's only 50 000 000 generations.
I've actually heard stuff on some gorgonopsians (Sauroctonus was used as an example) becoming well-adapted for grappling prey, much like the big sabre-toothed true mammals that came after them.
Gorgonsids- “wow things are going really great for us”
The great dying/Permian extinction event- I’M A BOUT TO RUIN THIS SPECIES WHOLE CAREER

Gorgonopsids are *weird*, like a furry, saber-toothed monitor lizard. Great video, thank you.👌💕
interesting evolution tree !!
nice video full of information!!
keep on the good work !
2:03 Sabre teeth alone are not a sufficient condition for classifying an animal as a carnivore. Just look at musk deer.
The rest of a musk deer's teeth, as well as its skull structure, indicate a plant-based diet. They have lightly-built skeletons which is not indicative of an animal which would stalk or take down prey. The skull of of a Gorgonopsid is heavily built with indications of powerful muscle attachments in the jaw and neck area. The whole skull/neck anatomy indicates an animal which actively and powerfully using its jaws and neck for biting and holding on, as a hunting animal would.
Also, you can't really compare this to a modern day mammal as it's one of the oldest creatures discovered with differentiated teeth like this. Modern day mammals have a much greater variety of tooth structures.
Really well done mate!
Good video. Just one issue I have. Why not say just a "thick skin " or thick hide", instead of scales 2:45? This just makes more sense considering earlier in your video you said they should be called Stem-mammals instead of a mammal-like reptile. I assume the only reason some people still draw them with scales is that that name makes them seem more like reptiles, who need a reptilian skin covering.
I love the way you ended this episode, their descendants wrote papers and make videos about them 🤣 That was pretty clever
Wonder if they had mammal like emotions. Or if they had reptile level emotions.
Or to be more specific if you brought a baby gorgon to modern times could he be tamed and show affection like most mammals can. Or would it be more like a reptile that can tolerate you but not truly love you.
why must animals have emotions like reptiles or mammals? they are animals, they have emotions.
I'd definitely consider gilled fish & the arthropods as a counterpoint, but reptiles don't have fairly different emotions than what mammals have
Awesome videos keep up the good work

The Gorgons are the good monsters from Toy Soldiers. The name makes sense now!
Looks like Komodo dragon
They look like Komodo Dragons
I've always found depictions of scaly, shrink-wrapped gorgonopsids with no extraneous soft tissue features to be highly unlikely. So much of their morphology reminds me of modern predators like cats and weasels, so it seems likely that, like them, they'd have substantial layers of fur, fat, and skin that would've significantly altered their living appearance. I for one would like to see more reconstructions of them with things like manes and patterned fur.

gorgonopsid vs T. rex? who whould win? my money on the gorgonopsid ;)

That old 3d model show had an episode on these animals was super cool.

That was a funny ending where you mentions us, their descendants, write papers and makes videos of them. That was certainly unexpected and funny.

For 2 minutes I thought the title said "when George ruled the earth" and couldn't breath lmao
Extremely interesting. Never even heard about this!
