  • Papa hates it, but along with its invasiveness there ARE benefits to the mimosa tree (also called albizia or persian silk tree). Should you grow it or kill it? What do you think?

I grew up with them around my home and they are actually scattered all around. Reminds me of my early childhood. I think they came to the US from Asia. I live in Georgia.

They're everywhere in SC. Most people around here love mimosa, and have a bit of sentiment attached it, especially of childhood, and the experience of a grandparent, or another favorite relative having one in the yard. I love to be under a large one in full flower, especially on a balmy, still, night.

They smell great, right! I think the invasiveness isn’t that big of a deal...definitely manageable. I’m gonna plant some more near my property line hedgerow because of how fast growing they are.

Like he said excellent pioneering tree for building a food forest also a consistent source of mulch for a garden etc. Paired in with fruit bearing trees at scale you can have a hands off self sustained forest. Grows all over GA. If it wasnt aggressive it would be difficult to build carbon capacity short term for firewood, mulch or chop and drop. Bean like variants all over southeast. Thanks for sharing!

My mom loved a mimosa tree that grew in our Southwest Philadelphia back yard in the 1970's. I remember her showing us kids something about how the little leaflets would 'fold up' if we touched them, or maybe if it was going to rain soon? They looked like the leaves in your video. I remember climbing in it when it was about 25' tall. We've long since moved away to a rural area on the Pa / NY border. I'd love to get a mimosa tree planted on our farm for my mom to enjoy once again. Do you know how they do this far north? I don't know what 'zone' we are in. Sumac seems to be the invasive species here. Thanks for your video!

I purchased a mimosa online. It has good roots and arrived with a few small branches. I threw it in a bucket and planned on transplanting it. I got it before the end of the freeze, so I didn't want it to die. Anyway, all the little branches died off and I was left with a mimosa stick. I thought it died. I pulled it up, but didn't throw it away. I stuck the rooted stick in a glass of water and lo and behold the damn thing started growing little branches back. Now I'm scared to take the darn thing out of the water and put it in dirt because I don't want it to die again. What do I do? Thanks.
