His voice is phenomenal. And the way music like this brings back memories like you so wonderfully described, is very special.
This song was first made famous by the Philadelphia soul musical group "Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes" in 1972. Simply Red covered this song in 1989 & it became a number one hit for them.
I absolutely love SR’s cover of this. The lead singer is Mick Hucknall, incredibly gifted vocalist! He formed the group way back in 1985 in Manchester, England and they were going until 2010 when they disbanded but started up again in 2015 with just Mick being the only original member I think. They’ve got a couple of new songs out and are touring summer of ‘23.
Another great cover they did on their 2003 album Home was You Make Me Feel Brand New. It’s stunning!

Simply Red really has such an emotional sound... it's as if we're hearing an amazing singer breaking while singing. He's convinced me that he feels what he sings deeply.

It’s quite something when it comes to covers if you make the song your own, that I think has to be your goal. And I think SR more than did this here, it was a huge success for them.
And as I’m here in May of 2023 we have just heard of the passing of the great, iconic Tina Turner 😢 And what a lot of people will not know is that one of her biggest hits was FIRST RECORDED by Ms Bonnie Tyler, yep, Bonnie was first to record The Best (which almost everybody assumes was called Simply The Best), anyway Bonnie recorded it FIRST but had very little success with though it did reach the Top Ten in Norway I think. Tina did her cover of it and if course, the rest they say is history, it was a massive worldwide hit for her and later Bonnie commented that Tina did a great job with it. RIP Ms Turner!
