  • In 1994, the Computer Sciences Corporation released a documentary titled, "The Happy Bottom Riding Club: The Legacy of Pancho Barnes."
Ms. Barnes was a Hollywood stunt pilot, air race pilot, and test pilot. She was a contemporary of early American woman barnstorming pilots such as Amelia Earhart and Jackie Cochran.
After World War II, her Happy Bottom Riding Club ranch in the Mojave Desert became a hub for social life at Edwards Air Force Base. Test pilot Chuck Yeager was the first member of her "club."
This documentary was funded by the Department of Defense Legacy Resource Management Program, for the Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards AFB.

I worked at Edwards for 12 years. Every year, there was a BBQ at her old ranch with so many of the adobe walls falling down. Fun times...fond memories.

Thank you all for this documentary. Recording these amazing people who were there, on the ground and certainly in the air, when history was being made. Pancho...I hope you're having the time of your life...

I went to Edwards AFB TDY six times between the 1980s and 1990s installing telephone cables. I was lucky to see two space shuttle landings. And when there filming The Right Stuff. I also met Chuck Yeager and shook his hand. Wow. Also got to see Pancho's place on base. The one thing i love the best about Edwards besides it's history, Those Sonic Booms. That base was almost a non ending air show. Thanks for this history of Pancho and Edwards AFB. I'm USAF retired and i'm going to visit Edwards soon. Great video. It brought back a lot of good memories.👍🌵🪖🛰✈🚁❤

Was stationed at EAFB in 1979-81. Worked there then since 1985 on all assigned aircraft comm and navigation systems. Put on the F-22 Raptor flight test program. Had a close call, near miss, with Chuck Yeager in the hallway in the pilots debrief building. Many memories of the famous place. - Ed Victory, USAF Veteran.

I was always sad and confused when the scene in "The Right Stuff" showed it burning down along with all the pictures on the wall.

Was born at Edwards in 1950. Dad was an F86 pilot. We lived three doors down from Yeager. Mom had been a medevac nurse in the Pacific. They'd met in Tokyo after the war. Fifty years later she would still boil over when asked about the Happy Bottom Riding Club.

I met Pancho at an airshow immediately after my first (off-the-books) flying lesson. I was wearing a leather jacket, still carrying my helmet and goggles, and before I could think of anything cogent I inadvertently said "Howdy, Ma;am". Pancho winced, but said nothing aloud. Unusually tactful for her.

In those days Muroc was like the far side of the moon. You always see that woman with a big smile on her face. Pancho greased the wheels of aviation progress.

I love hearing from the heros and legends who brought on the space age and the golden Era they lived in.
My grandfather was a WW2 vet and they were all my heros, especially loved the fighter planes!

I saw pictures in books going back to the 60's, even in Aeromodel magazines, one of her at the nose of her Lockheed Vega.

Along with Beryl Markham (first trans-atlantic solo flight east to west, 1933) Pancho is one of my aviation heroes.
Let's give the film makers credit and recognize the title they gave their own work: "The Legend of Pancho Barnes and The Happy Bottom Riding Club". Certainly she left an aviation legacy, but that's not included in the title of this great work of video art.

My favorite story about Pancho was how she divorced her preacher husband who refused to grant her a divorce. She took her clothes off, hopped on a horse and ran it up to the pulpit on a Sunday morning to demand the divorce. He agreed. lol
