Fascinating, always uses to go to Butetown carnival as a lad and loved it. Never realised so many amazing stories. Barry Boy.

Really pleased to see commentaries going beyond the often simplified and generic exploration of Tiger Bay/Butetown. Love the story around Mr Ali at the end of this piece.

Really interesting to watch videos like this. I started my apprenticeship in Cardiff docks in the dark nights after work I would run up Bute St to get the bus home and definitely wouldn't go up Colindon Rd in the dark 🤣

The whole area was kinda weird i remember it being broken up into different areas separated by certain roads and the Glamorganshire Canal, like Pomeroy,The Docks and Butetown and god forbid you would say someone was from Butetown if you lived in the Docks, also people tend to forget some of them weren't mixed that much at least before the mid to late 60s...
I was born in 18 Eleanor Street just off Bute Esplanade it was next to Eleanor St school we moved out about 1965 i visit sometimes to remember those that have passed we were a very large family and when i`m there the memories seem stronger...

Was that Frederick de Courcey in centre front row of Gospel mission photo? He was an entrepreneur who built some of Cardiff's arcades.

The most famous personality out of tiger bay was shirley bassey? I could be wrong, could anyone else tell me a more famous person?

@@carolinecollett4349 I don't really mind her being associated with Tiger Bay it was just a promotional thing after all to kickstart her career..but it does irk a little that in her later life she still insisted she was from there...
