    Well, now I am excited about Dons addition to the kettle world.
    Currently using a cheapish temperature control kettle and then transferring the hot water into a thermos. Works fine and is a huge step up from constantly reheating the kettle to the desired temperature, but of course, it's not perfect. You always have to think about the state of the thermos, it is already preheated, so does the temperature drop etc.
    I am waiting for the one kettle to rule them all.

    • @Blueberryminty
      @Blueberryminty 3 роки тому +1

      that's indeed what I do. I already had a good insulated thermos that performed well, and it does keep my water up to temperature throughout a short daily session. (I boil it 5 degrees higher then I need and after pouring it over, it has the right temperature). only for those darker teas that can use close to boiling water, i have a problem. even preheated the temperature falls to 95 degrees quickly, just because of the pouring over into the thermos.

    Awesome review. Thanks! With all the issues, why not use a different (non insulated) kettle and just transfer boiled water to a good thermos to keep by your side? Saves you from getting up and going to reboil. 🤓

    That was really interesting! Personally I find the water pour very disturbing and the large 10 deg increment a little less (5deg would have been fine)! I just wonder whether, with them being a UK company, they might listen to the review and maybe get back to you with additional info that you could pass on to us.

    I have the Stagg and so far outside of the slow pour/leak issue I've been totally satisfied. I mean, from a materials standpoint the Vektra is super cool but I think they could better refine the design, and of course make it available to American tea drinkers such as myself.
    Also, FLOWER CRANE. FLOWER CRANEEEEEEE. Ordered a cake immediately. Its been a long time coming, now time to save up for the spring green tea splurge.

    The colour palette in this video is delightful! Between the dimly lit grey wall in the back and the symmetrically framed bue couch on the cooler end, and, on the warmer end, the skin tone and tray beige hilighted by the maroon cake wrapper, this is pretty nice! Good choice for the shirt color as well! The ligher shirt (not a Farah?!) in a neutral color allows the face to pop up against that palette (and the lighter accent brought by the teware in the bottom right is pleaseant too). A less contrasting shirt colour wouldn't have worked as nicely (like an orange or a medium grey), but this level of contrast with the face and the couch/background is great. I don't know if there is thought and planning that went into this or not, but if there was then it is not unnoticed. If this was a total accident, then please continue to enjoy the effortless aesthetic :)

    I'm a big fan of the Bonavita kettle, I'm on my second one at this point. I never worried about the sound of the kettle being on during my session, does it disturb the serenity of my session? Thank you Don, you've added a criteria that I appreciate, but beside the cord length, there is only one feature I need and I've taken it up with the Bonavita people is I would like the ability to change the presets. Regarding heating the water and letting it be, no! What is the point of going to the trouble of taking tasting notes if you are sloppy with the temperature of the infusions? So no as a Teahead, I must have the ability to know the exact temperature is the one I set. But this review was amazing, so much was considered and it was packed! Some day we may have everything but we have to pick our battles at this moment.

    I have this kettle and I'm a big fan.
    For better control over pouring what I do is tilt the kettle at a sharp angle, supporting the weight with my other hand, and then press/release the button with my thumb while in the tilted position. It makes the pour a lot more predictable.
    After I bought this kettle I also learned there is a kettle called RediKettle, which is near identical to this one but has very slightly different features, including an indicator for how many cups worth of water is left inside. I wonder how it compares to this one?
    Hubimex also seem to have one identical to the Vektra.

    The best tea kettles are the traditional ones, like the japanese bofura kettle, Chao Zhou Sha Diao, tetsubins, silver ginbin kettles, taiwanese clay kettles, all of these can be used either on an infrared burner like I do, or on a traditional charcoal stove, I have used many kettles in the past and they do make a diffrence, you can taste it side by side, these electric kettles are convenient, I use a glass electric induction kettle when I am in a hurry, I use it for tisanes, medicinal herbal teas, or when I am drinking tea grandpa style, but when I have a proper tea session I use a bofura for japanese teas and a sha diao for oolongs, and I have a tetsubin for heavier aged teas.

However, if I predominantly drank tea that didn’t require boiling water this would be fantastic. Also, I’d prefer a gooseneck version for the pour, perhaps they can release one in the future. Hmmm. Around 13 minutes you say that you would prefer a higher speed in boiling the water, but don't you think that when this kettle only provides temperature control in the rate of 10 degrees, that you would like to have more time to stop the kettle if you wish for a temperature in between? I'm just thinking out loudly though. I guess with the lid open the water would cool down rapidly enough to achieve that desired purpose. Only a small waste of energy all things considered, but makes you think...

    An idea I was thinking as I watched this for a way around the plastic lid and bad pour. I wonder if it would still be effective if you were to insulate all but the tip of a gooseneck. timestamp 30:00 - yes and with every reheating of the boiled water you loose more life and energy out of the water. In Germany thermally insulated coffee urns have existed for some time. Make the coffee pour it into the thermos flask, you have your hot coffee. How is this kettle an improvement on that process apart from removing one step, that of pouring boiled water into a preheated thermally insulated flask? For the sake of that one step, is it really worth it? In China it is not unusual to have 2.5L-3L thermos flasks with immersion wands for boiling the water. I can't see how this kettle solves a problem better than existing solutions. As for temperature increments, you are not taking into account thermal overshoot. Most electric kettles I've seen do not have fine temperature control down to one degree without sacrificing heating time so as not to overshoot. Further the pid controller necessary for this is quite complex. Most electric kettles I've had have a 5-10 degree overshoot, this I target by selecting a lower target temp and allowing the kettle to come off the heat, closer to the desired temperature. Not optimal, but practical.

    For gong fu brewing you dont really need thermally insulated kettle. In fact, you need quite the opposite, that's why many people in Taiwan and Hong Kong are using silver kettles. The water for most teas is best 100 degrees, just boiled, not a lot of time passed after the bubble stage. I have a tetsubin, and even it i only fill for about 3 steeping, and then i boil new water. But many who have a smaller silver or clay kettle even only fill it for 1 steeping and pouring over teaware
