This episode, I get some more help to remove a lot of Tally Ho’s hull planking. The volunteers grind and hammer copper rivets, while I finish lofting the intermediate frames inside the workshop. Finally I make the first frame template, and cut the first futtocks for that frame, shaping the Live Oak timber using the huge ship/bandsaw, a large circular saw, and the custom sawzall assembly.

27. From Lofting to Re-Framing / Removing Planks
If anyone needs a reminder of all the hard work, planning, and calculation that went into Tally ho, rewatch these old episodes.
I guess if you sell this series to the BBC, you will be able to finance the whole project. The best UA-cam series I've seen so far. Great work, Leo!
yeah and charge them for the editing too...lol'.
The BBC HAS TO BUY THIS!
I totally agree!!
Yeah, I know nothing about boats but I have watched every episode.....great stuff!!
@@Texburrito03 any mainstream outlet would completely ruin this series. Leo is doing a great job as is, no corporate involvement needed.
I like going back to these early videos and watching "Optimistic Leo" as he thinks he'll be able to re-use so much of the original lumber, knowing full well that a year or so down the road it will become obvious that won't be possible...
I agree it would be simpler and more practical to build a new boat or to pull it completely apart before starting. I also think you are a mad man to take on this project..... However, I cannot express enough how much admiration I have for you and the endeavour you have decided to undertake. It is obvious that others feel the same way from the way you have inspired the folks that have decided to help you. Any way, you maniac, keep on doing what you do, the world could do with a few more mad men like you in the world. Truly inspiring 👍
I really enjoy this series. I volunteer at the Maine Maritime Museum, and we recently rebuilt a 73 foot sparred length schooner (built in Bath, ME 112 years ago) at the museum. Watching that boat (Mary E.) come back to life over the last year dovetails very well with this series, and I’m learning a great deal in the process. All of which is making me a better Docent on the boat, and hopefully a more informative guide for our museum guests.
Steve Cross is a legend, big ups for his contributions with the live oak and that brilliant saw design
Did you edit cheka oiling her futtocks? I'm sur I laughed more the first time I watched. Great inspirational work. Continue. Thanks.
That Georgia ship saw looks amazing. And with it having been made by Steve Cross, it makes me wonder how many fork-lift trucks went into the build lol
Enjoy watching the earnest joy of Leo's quest. Soon to enter my eighth decade and to witness such a calm and hopeful confidence Leo displays brightens my outlook. The remarkable quality of these young peoples journey is evident in these simple but elegant films. The old saying a picture is worth a thousand words seems to hold true. Leo's less is more editing, speaks for itself. Congratulations you should be commended for your sparse but always warm renditions. Your film is much like your drawings, revealing what you wish to summon. Leo brings the spirit of the wind calling the Tally Ho to us. I say thank you.
Here is why the restoration of the Tally Ho is not a new build. Starting with the first few episodes, it was clear that Leo intended only to make the boat sea worthy (and likely pretty her up a bit). As happens with many restorations, the deeper one digs, the more one finds that needs repair...or replacement, if repair is impossible or impractical. Recall the episode when Leo realized that the TH had been either incorrectly built or (more likely) damaged, resulting in an uneven curvature of the frame -- specifically, a flattening of (as I recall) the starboard side near the top. He agonized over the decision of whether to restore her to the deformed shape or rebuild her to the shape as designed by famous shipwright Albert Strange. He chose the latter, dramatically increasing the cost (in every sense) of the project. This is not a "blank canvas" build. Rather, it's a restoration -- one piece at a time -- of an entire boat.
As the old planks come off and the new ones go on, the soul of the the ship remains.
I understand what you are saying but knowing her history and a fair amount of boating Leo must have known this is part of Any rebuild. What's going to be left of the boat just her Name ? He is doing a great job but should have just built one from scratch. Because in the end it's going to be an old boat value wise even though everything is new.
@@MegaBait1616 . about all that can be said for your comment is that you just don't get it.
Mmmyess Relax.
MarineMan you are the one that dosent was understand. Could you buy the Mona Lisa? What about someone’s favorite possession? Yes for enough money you probably could it’s because they almost transcend money, there relics. but for enough money and effort you can buy them. That’s what Leo’s doing, he’s creating a relic that has strong emotional value, I doubt you’ll ever find the best part of creating something.
Cecca is a keeper. Lovely inside and out. It looks to me that's she's a joyful soul.
Leo, you should get a map and stick a pin in wherever any of your help comes from. Hi Dave from Petaluma! Done any drag racing out on Frates Road? 😉
Great idea
This is the Best channel on YT right now - IMHO. I'm always blown away by Leo's skill as a shipwright, woodworker and story teller! Amazing, binge-worthy content.
You will end up with an as new classic with a considerable part of the original boat remaining! I applaud your approach and admire your courage! It's great to see you attracting such a capable team of volunteers to lighten your load. Those large timbers will be heavy work. My admiration for old timers and their boatbuilding skills increases as I watch your progress! Your explanation of the intricacies of traditional boat construction are very informative although I get left behind as you plough ahead! Graet video series and well done. Tally Ho!!
Boot restaureren
You, my friend, are one talented, intelligent young man and it is wonderful to see the progress you are making.
Your work habits, work ethics and attention to detail is why England was an Empire. I just spent my entire day off watching
from episode 1 till now. Keep up the good work Leo! God Bless! ,,,,,/),,,,,
Love that ship saw and band saw fabulous equipment . I'm a Patreon subscriber...if you haven't supported Leo s quest yet and love his videos you should open your wallet and give him a hand . Well worth the money to see this project getting finished. Keep it up Leo and friends Tally Ho !!
One EASY things you can do to help out Leo’s channel and help him out..simply watch all the adds all the way through. It may be a small but I’ve been told UA-cam gives him more $$ by watching all the way to the end of the adds..... Also check out his patronage page and donate a little for each video. Subscribing and smashing the like button on each video works to help others find this channel. Keep up the great work Leo!
We have a tame wild crow. Comes and asks most politely for food. The kids really don't appreciate how unusual this is. But then they dont see a dozen sea trout spawning in the River Teign as anything unusual. The fish have to spawn, but within 1/2 mile of a housing estate is something else.
I look forward to each new episode. It is so commendable to see so many people coming to your work site to help. I am fascinated by your craftsmanship and your vision. Love the birds too.
Leo is a man to be admired. Rarely you see a person that can do what he does... He is the ultimate renaissance man. Jc
a potential relay and a capacitor and you can get rid of the pony start on that phase converter.....total cost, 15 bucks. Or you can put an 80 dollar VFD on the bandsaw and run direct from 220 single phase....
Second favorite part of these videos is the parrot. Wildly missed in the current videos, but great to see in these earlier videos.
I’ve never touched the fast forward button on one of your videos.
Great job all around!
Very interesting. Keep it up!
The guy who made french subtitles did a very good job! They are excellents.
That ship saw just slides through that live oak like butter!!! Lovely to see. Saw an old wood cutter in a boat yard the other day and thought of Leo. The person was taking the transom off and replacing it. I remember doing that a time or to back when I was repairing boats. Getting the bevels right was always my problem. Lots of fussing! Good work Leo!
crows can remember a friendly face for years, chances are he still remembers that you all helped him out
noice
You might have a helper that welds pull off the saw guards, pull them gently apart and cut and weld 3/16” galvanized sheet shaped around 1/2”x3/16” angle framework using bolt on tabs. As a cabinet maker with a )not quite as) large band saw AND a Much Larger mill type band saw i know that if a blade breaks or slips off the wheel it can very easily cut through a leg or deeply into an abdomen. The sheet goods wood cabinet, though very well intentioned would not even slow that blade down but only maybe serve to change directions or creat a jagged whip. They are deadly and there is a great reason all new band saws come covered in metal with tight tolerance guides. Life is a risk and you cant eliminate all of them. But that’s an easy one. Thanks for great videos, sorry to sound like an OSHA Inspector but I went through 2 years Physical Ther with a woman whose leg was sawed half off by a saw in an unexpected moment.
8:30 you have just admitted you are building a now boat. which is completely ok. happy building the new Ho.
Yeah he's still tearing it down and starting again, just one piece at a time.
My first boatbuilding channel was Lou--Tips From a Shipwright--and now I'm hooked. This boat is beautiful and your craft and care is quite remarkable. I just can't get enough of this sort of stuff.
You know watching this in the "South-Bay", (Torrance), Ca. AKA SO-CAL OR CALI as it is known. I am extremely impressed at yours and "acorns or Arabella's" work and progress. To view this is so spell-binding and mesmerizing. I honestly can't get enough. If I had the funds I'd fly over the pond to assist, (with your permission), just for the experience and knowledge and travel. Keep up the good work "mateys"!
Hull is looking better now that most of the planking is off and you can reshape the hull lines. Good to see the first frame come off the saw.
The Georgia saw is brilliant, i love seeing whatever comes out of the minds of shipwrights because, as tools go, they can cook up some really ingenious designs from the most random of parts.
Boat's coming along really nicely and, new bird mascot. :)
Excited to see a new episode. Loving this series. It’s really inspiring me and my kids to follow your dreams and set your goals high. Cheers Leo
As a more modern day fabricator , usually metal , those rolling bevels on the frame futtocks are awesome to see cut . Getting them all the right way round when they are split frames too must of taken a lot of careful thought . Well done everyone . Makes me think how much skill the old boatbuilders had constructing the massive warships and ships of the line etc , late tudor like the Mary Rose ,Henry VIII s naval behemoth there must of been a lot more fairing by eye in those days 👍 👍
Thats it.
The baby crow was the last straw.
I need to visit lol XD
I am pleased with the fact that you are planning on reusing as many of the planks as possible and that you will use them where you can in the joinery of the interior. I understand the reason for the lofting, but then again, I have also been having the thoughts of taking the original soul/spirit of Tally Ho and replacing it. That being said, you are just trying to make her whole again and bring her back to Mr. Strange's original design. I imagine he would be very honored if he were still among the living. Well done, well done indeed.
I really liked his Explanation of that, how, as long as her Shape stays visible, It's HER, regardless of how much New Wood goes into her. Works For Me.
i have a mission to my self too ,,to watch all your ducomentary or blog from the very beggining until on the latest good job leo
If that soldier can't reduce the live oak to mulch in 120 seconds flat - it's GOT to be the most sturdy wood on the planet :D
A perfect way to start my weekend...watching someone ELSE work! :))) Kidding aside this is the best series on youtube!
One, if not the best video yet Leo, I really enjoyed seeing all the different people working on Tally Ho this time and that they all said a few words. It takes teamwork like this to make your life easier and to make the project flow along smoothly. We all like to see Poncho keeping an eye on the project and making sure you swabs are rebuilding HER boat right. Glad you FINALLY are finished with the tedious but important lofting floor and putting it to good use building patterns already. Big thumbs up to you.
Speaking four years in the future, it's wonderful to see the process of figuring out how to make the frames, which tools to use, which order to do things...then figure out how to make them more efficiently, then figure out you need to get a big group of people to smash it out, then become an incredible people manager for short bursts during the two framing parties. Leo you've been an inspiration since the beginning. And a teacher. And an entertainer. I've dared to make wooden bungalows and a little boat in Indonesia on my own because of you. I have no doubt that you have zero time to read comments on old videos, but I'm re-binging all the old eps and needed to say something. Wish I could be there to see tally ho get wet.
I grew up in Georgia. I got into this by seeing your videos on milling that Live Oak. So neat to have that beautiful and strong wood in your boat from the South. Enjoy it!
Happy Birthday Leo & you had the greatest day by the looks. How good is social media when used so successfully as you do. You are an amazing guy & with your UA-cam helpers that come by the work is getting done. I am hoping that my life goes on long enough to see the end result & you sailing her back to the UK. You have taken on momentous job but are tackling it at every level like the skillful tradesman you are. Thank you so much for sharing your journey. Good luck. Billy J. Queensland Australia
Love this series. Happy belated birthday man! It's so exciting to see new pieces being made!
What a sense of achievement getting all that lofting done! That lofting floor will be a "hotmess" of marks and holes. Hope you can keep track of what is what on there. That would scare me half to death! Always a thrill when the notification pops up to say you've posted another video!
wonderful job!!!
Another brilliant episode - Thank you :)

I don't even like sailing, I've been on a sailboat for a week, 5 years ago or something. Somehow I stumbled onto your channel and you managed to convince me to waste my saturday watching the entire series. You've earned yourself a subscriber, keep it up!

Happy birthday!!! Hooray hooray... Your a modern day hero Leo!!! Starboy
Good stuff, great to see sawdust start to fly. Happy Birthday!
Go Leo! I love your work.
Hello Leo, PRAZI makes a saw adapter that turns a skil saw into a chainsaw. I use them to cut open beam packages on log homes. they work well because you have a table to go off of instead of free handing with a chainsaw. cheers buddy!!
Happy birthday! So glad to see progress on your boat. I know you have been working really hard lofting which takes up a lot of time. I think you are on the right track and it is looking really good. Bet Steve is glad to see the Ga ship saw being used.
Happy Birthday, too. I keep learning a lot from your posts.
Love the job done. 👍 All the best. Greetings from Malaysia. Watching here at 2:30 am.
Been waiting all week for the next video happy to fly over sometime and give a helping hand I’m not shy when it comes to hard work and enjoy working with wood
