I did a bike trip in 2005 from chicago-pittsburgh. That was the goal. i made it to Mansfield ohio (or maybe it was Canton?) and called my dad for a ride. it was several days of rain non stop and was supposed to get snow was in april. Tent leaked, everything was wet. I had this vintage camp stove that i had trouble keeping working. So i backed out with a hundred miles to go or a day to go for me at the time.. but, i knew i could have kept going and regretted backing out ever since. I went to bob evans with my dad and his wife at the time. which was really depressing. Getting through the hard days are so much more rewarding then backing out. I think i was 20 at the time.

I think we look to people who push themselves physically as an inspiration because they take themselves so far out of their comfort zone and yet strive to keep going. Yet beyond what can be seen is an even more difficult challenge that takes people even further outside of their comfort zone, and that is the interior one. The mental/emotional one. Everything you are going through is completely normal and even to be expected. It is apart of the journey and the adventure. You can do this. It will make you stronger if you let it. Hang in there and thank you for sharing!

That snow can be a challenge but it really is majestic on trail. Gave me butterflies/chills seeing all the white. Stay tough out there! Remember you were strong both physically and mentally the moment you stepped foot on the trail. It takes courage to even start what you’re doing. It’s completely fine to express how you feel. Don’t bottle up too much. And remember why you’re out there and all the support from your friends and family. Let that drive you! 🤙🏻

Hang in there! From what I've seen, your enthusiasm and sense of wonder will pull you through the tough times. In my years of hiking and backpacking, the toughest times (while they really suck while they're happening) make for the best memories and (most importantly) the best stories. Trust me; you'll wake up one morning and this trip will be 50 years in the past and you'll be grateful for the memories and the stories you can tell. Your grandchildren will look at you and think, "damn, she was tough when she was young." Yeah, it'll happen that way.

I don’t know if you’ll see this, but I wanted to tell you that you’re doing great! The start of the AT through the Smokeys is one of the toughest stretches of the whole trail and you are killing it out there!
I thru hiked the AT last year and can definitely sympathize with the allergies, chiggers and so on. I just wanted to say that towns and hostels are never more than a couple days away. Nothing wrong with taking a nearo or a zero for your mental and physical well being.

You need a couple days in a hotel! It sucks to hike sick! Our minds make the worst of everything when we feel bad. You are brave to show your emotions, but realize that this is temporary and that it is greatly exaggerated because you are sick. Never quit on a bad day. If you quit make sure it's on a sunny, warm day and when you aren't sick. If you feel this isn't for you on a day like that, then it's actually smart to go home. Best wishes! I admire your bravery to be such a young person.

Other than physical injury, loneliness, missing loved ones etc, seems to be the hardest part of a thru hike. Thru hiking is HARD! It's why only about 20% of hikers are successful. Jesse, if you can fight through this, then I see no reason why you won't be one of the 20%. I don't know if it's feasible for you, but, maybe, take more than 1 day off to let your body heal. Then, go finish your thru hike.👍

You're doing fine. Everybody misses family and friends while out there. You're just having a bad day. When you're cold like you are, cook something warm and eat. If you have a nalgene pour boiling water in it and put it in a sock. Get into your sleeping bag or quilt with the nalgene and stay in your tent. If you don't have a 1 liter nalgene it is worth carrying. You can't put boiling water in a smart water bottle....its not that smart. LOL
