For me for straight ahead and most other I’m going with the King overall. Both Just different personal preference.. 2 legendary horns handled by a pro

Llevo más de 20 años tocando un Mark VI de los '70 y acaba de caer en mis manos un King Super 20 del '59 y creo que me he enamorado de él... la sensación es de un sonido más pleno, más rico en la parte grave, medios-graves, aunque quizás no con tanta proyección en el registro medio-alto como el Selmer. En tu prueba esa diferencia no parece notarse tanto... De cualquier forma me encanta como te suenan ambos. Creo que el King es un gran saxo para tocar mainstream; el Selmer puede resultar más versatil en ese aspecto. Keep blowing!

Estoy totalmente de acuerdo con lo que cuentas, yo añadiría que el Selmer me produce una sensación de dulzura o sutileza que no consigo con el King, es como si fuera más dúctil y los sonidos fueran más maleables. Son los dos grandes saxos y aunque tuve la misma sensación que comentas cuando se cruzó el King en mi camino al final volví a Selmer. Ya me ha pasado en más de una ocasión, siempre vuelvo a Selmer. El sonido bestial, ambos muy bueno, lo que diferencian los saxos es en la ergonomía , mecánica y digitación , pero ambos saxos son de primera división , yo manejo un Conn 10m transitional y sml revd , la digitación de tus saxos son muy buena. Felicidades gran vídeo .
Beautiful playing. The differences between saxophones are very subtle, unnoticeable to many . The King is a tad brighter if you like bright. The Selmer has a fuller darker "saxy" sound in the mid range notes in my opinion. I have a 1962 Super 20 and Selmer Super Action 80. For me the altissimo notes come out with much less effort and in tune on the Super 20.
Thanks for your words. Both are great saxophones, and for me Selmer is more complete, it allows me a more extensive dynamic range, although S20 has a tone and lightness that seduces. But, in the end it's Selmer who I play as the main instrument. Thank you again!!
I agree with Tyrone. You sound very similar on either sax. The S20 does sound slightly more open, bright, more free blowing. It's funny to see both side by side at the end. The Selmer looks so skinny next to the S20 with that huge bell and thicker body all around.
The little secret is that a King Zephyr from the late 40s through the late 50s is essentially the same horn as a Super 20 of the same year in construction and sound. The ergonomics are not as good, but only on the bell keys which are pretty easy to get adjusted to once you play it a while. And the best part -- they cost about 1/3 of the price of a Super 20.
Yes!!, thank you Jasper for to share this secret. I tested an alto King Zephyr and I did not like so much... For me the big difference was with a King Super 20 Full Pearls tenor sax, a really big change, and the price too.. Thank for your words.
@@pedrocortejosa One sax is too small of a sample size. I've played about 12 Zephyrs and have owned 8 (tenors). I actually owned a 35x,xxx Super 20 and a 35x,xxx Zephyr at the same time, and the Zephyr had a better response, sound and that hard-to-describe "magic" to the sound that some saxes have and others don't. It has to do with the fact that they were all handmade so some just turned out great, some good, and others just OK. Ditto with Selmers and all other handmade horns from the golden era.
Honestly, the King sounds easily as good as the Selmer-they should have been more popular based on what my ears are telling me. Very surprising comparison!

Este MK6 suena bárbaro, lo note con un sonido mas centrado y un filo y brillo perfecto lo cual le dan una gran versatilidad a la ora de tocar. Todo va en gusto, quien pretenda un sonido mas abierto y Dark, optara seguro por el King; yo particularmente, elegiría el Selmer pero esto es una mera cuestión de gustos ....

They sounded pretty much identical to me (...through my internet connection, computer electronics and headphones). :) Are you sure you're not "insisting" the King has a different possible sound signature? All this really tells me is ...if I can't find a Mark VI in near mint...find a near mint King Super 20. :) Nicer engraving on the bell !! :) Ti's so hard to do any horn comparison test. Even if we take the same horn, play the same track 10 times..each play won't be exactly the same. We're not digital/robots. Could be having a bad day. A little under the weather. Some bronchitis developing...etc.j
Should have an unbiased test: No identification, just horn A, horn B, and id them at the end. Usually very subtle discernible differences. The real question is: which horn does the player prefer after a grueling 4 hour gig...comfort and fatigue are part of the equation.
Yes, you´re completly right. The only important thing is the sensation, the weight, the vibration, fingering and a lot of subtle differences. The sound is inside the musician, and the horn must aid. Thank you for your words.
You can actually do what you're describing by just closing your eyes and listening to the video. I did and couldn't tell which horn he was playing when. It sounded pretty similar all the way through -- like him playing the sax! Proves you don't have to have a Selmer to get a great sound and sound like you!

Es muy difícil apreciar la diferencia entre ambos. Suenan muy bien los dos, pero eso es sin duda por tu buen hacer como saxofonista. Yo tengo también un Mark VI y un Super 20 y creo que ambos son excelentes instrumentos. Ahora bien, tal vez la ergonomía del Mark Vi sea un poco mejor y especialmente el mecanismo, ya que el del King es un poco endeble. De hecho muchos grandes maestros como Trane, Griffin, James Moody, Hank Mobley o Rollins, tocaban Super 20 y casi todos cambiaron a Mark VI.

I once had a King tenor sax, so I'm perhaps a bit biased. But I find the King a bit more raw in its sound, in a positive sense. I really like that sound. Very expressive and fits the jazz genre.

You say the Super 20 is a 450,xxx? Still great in that Eastlake range, but a Cleveland in the 300,000 to 390,000 range would equal or best that VI in the tone department.

The tuning on the MK VI is a little better but the Super 20 is a more expressive Sax. They’re great horns and to own either would be awesome.

Menos dulce, más bronco, si. Tiene menos resonancia de ese tipo al que te refieres, pero esa característica le da un tono muy peculiar.
The choice of notes played on both saxophones is bad, so they both sound the same.
King sounds a tad stuffy and the VI is more compact and brighter.
